In the USS Cole affair, FBI agent John O'Neill led the investigation and was getting background and info on the true attackers of the Cole when he was recalled to DC to never return to Yemen. US Ambassador to Yemen, Barbara Bodine, was the main roadblock to O'Neill's investigation.
Why was the Cole sent to Yemen to refuel? Refueling is normally done at sea, so why send a US ship alone, to Yemen for refueling?
Was the upcoming 2000 US presidential election a factor?
Was a "false-flag" needed to help all but guarantee that the Bush/Cheney Junta win the election? And was that "false-flag" the October 2000 attack on the Cole?
Some sources, like the NYT, issued hit pieces on O'Neil, while others, praised him for his tireless efforts in investigating the Cole attack.
But others praised John's work in Yemen:
Bodine wanted O'Neill to drop his bodyguards and he became suspicious of Mossad assassination. Bodine and Madeleine Albright finally went to the FBI Director, Louis Freeh, to remove John O'Neill from Yemen.
O'Neill retired from the FBI in August 2001 and took a job with the WTC in New York. He was appointed by Kroll Associates, namely by the controversial managing director Jerome Hauer.
"Lucky" Larry Silverstein, who took control of the WTC the first of September, insists that O'Neill start work in the WTC no later than the first week of September. On 9/11, although he has a meeting scheduled on the 88th floor of the North Tower, "Lucky" Larry is late for that meeting and miraculously isn't in the WTC when the attacks commence.

The same day, in an interview with CBS News' Dan Rather, Rather also asks Hauer if the attacks could have been carried out without state sponsorship. Hauer replies: “I’m not sure I agree that this is necessarily state-sponsored. It… certainly has the fingerprints of somebody like bin Laden.”
Amazing. Hauer and his buds were completely clueless about the WTC attacks before 9/11, but on the day of the attacks, he's already tracked down and fingered a suspect.

However, upon arriving in Yemen, he complained about inadequate security. As his team investigated, O'Neill came into conflict with Barbara Bodine, the U.S. ambassador to Yemen. The two had widely divergent views on how to handle searches of Yemeni property and interviews with citizens and government officials, and they only grew further apart as time progressed.A New York Times report of August 19, 2001 suggested that O'Neill had been the subject of an "internal investigation" at the FBI.
After a month in Yemen, O'Neill returned to New York 20 pounds (9 kg) lighter than when he left. He hoped to return to that country to continue the investigation, but was blocked by Bodine and others. He continued to investigate the Cole bombing, but eventually decided that the FBI investigation in Yemen must be pulled out due to inadequate security.
