Ideas For Peace - Gaza and Israel?

Doesn't look like this is open to just 38Degrees members or you might like to sign up to have a say?

In the past 20 days of fighting in Gaza and Israel more than 1000 people have been killed and tens-of-thousands have been injured - many of them children [1]

Yesterday there was a brief 12 hour truce. Foreign ministers from around the world, including Philip Hammond MP, met in Paris to try to reach a long-term ceasefire. Fighting started again overnight. [2] But just this morning both sides agreed to a further 24 hour truce. It's not clear yet if it will hold. [3]

38 Degrees is a movement which stands for peace. In the news day after day we’ve seen men, women and children from both sides being killed. The natural reaction is to want to help - to do something.

The war is over 2,300 miles away from the UK. The conflict is long, bloody and seemingly neverending.It’s easy to feel powerless. 38 Degrees members have been sharing feelings of frustration and despair at what’s happening.

“If we could persuade our government to change course, against immensely powerful lobbyists, many other governments would probably capitulate, bringing a well deserved peace to the region at last.” Robin

“I am a 38 Degrees member and really concerned by the general apathy of the UK and European governments in the face of Israeli aggression in Gaza…” Ashley

David Cameron has urged “restraint” from both sides. [4] And Philip Hammond MP, our foreign minister, has said that "the necessity right now is to stop the loss of life." [5]

Many 38 Degrees members are demanding a stronger response from the UK government. Some think this should take the form of sanctions, others think we should be pushing for war crimes investigations. Some of us think the UK should stay out of it altogether.

Philip Hammond represented us at the talks yesterday in Paris. And he will continue to represent us until a peace deal is agreed by all sides.

Whatever your view, Philip Hammond and the government should hear what we expect of them. 38 Degrees members haven’t written to the new foreign minister before, but with the death toll increasing by the day, now is the time to tell him what you think. Click here to send Philip Hammond a personal email:

1. Mohammed Sha’aban, 24, was killed in a bombing of his car in Gaza City.
2. Ahmad Sha’aban, 30, died in the same bombing.
3. Khadir al-Bashiliki, 45, died in the same bombing.
4. Rashad Yaseen, 27, was killed in a bombing of the Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
5. Riad Mohammed Kawareh, 50, was killed in a bombing of his family’s home in Khan Younis.
6. Seraj Ayad Abed al-A’al, 8, was wounded in the same bombing and succumbed to his injuries that evening.
7. Mohammed Ayman Ashour, 15, died in the same bombing.
8. Bakr Mohammed Joudah, 22, died in the same bombing.
9. Ammar Mohammed Joudah, 26, died in the same bombing.
10. Hussein Yousef Kawareh, 13, died in the same bombing.
11. Mohammed Ibrahim Kawareh, 50, died in the same bombing.
12. Bassim Salim Kawareh, 10, died in the same bombing.
13. Mousa Habib, 16, from Gaza City’s al-Shujaiyah neighborhood, was killed along with his 22-year old cousin while the pair were riding a motorcycle.
14. Mohammed Habib, 22, was killed with Mousa Habib.
15. Sakr Aysh al-Ajouri, 22, was killed in an attack on Jabaliyah, in northern Gaza.
16. Ahmad Na’el Mehdi, 16, from Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, was killed in a bombing that wounded two of his friends.
17. Hafiz Mohammed Hamad, 30, an Islamic Jihad commander, was killed in the bombing of his home in Beit Hanoun, along with five of his family members.
18. Ibrahim Mohammed Hamad, 26, died in the same bombing.
19. Mehdi Mohammed Hamad, 46, died in the same bombing.
20. Fawzia Khalil Hamad, 62, died in the same bombing.
21. Dunia Mehdi Hamad, 16, died in the same bombing.
22. Suha Hamad, 25, died in the same bombing.
23. Suleiman Salman Abu Soaween, 22


Wed, July 9:
24. Abdelhadi Jamaat al-Sufi, 24, was killed in a bombing near the Rafah crossing.
25. Naifeh Farjallah, 80, was killed in an airstrike on the town of Moghraqa, southwest of Gaza City.
26. Abdelnasser Abu Kweek, 60, was killed in the bombing of Gaza’s central governorate along with his son.
27. Khaled Abu Kweek, 31, Abdelnasser Abu Kweek’s son, was killed in the same bombing.
28. Amir Areef, 13, died in a bombing in Sha’af.
29. Mohammed Malkiyeh, one and a half years old, died in a bombing along with his mother and a young man.
30. Amniyeh Malkiyeh, 27, Mohammed Malkiyeh’s mother, died in the same bombing.
31. Hatem Abu Salem, 28, died in the same bombing.
32. Mohammed Khaled al-Nimri, 22
33. Sahar Hamdan, 40, died in the bombing of her home in Beit Hanoun.
34. Ibrahim Masri, 14, Sahar Hamdan’s son, was killed in the same bombing.

Neil Young Let Your Song Keep on Rocking in the Free World' have real meaning, Don't Play in Israel!

Being a Neil Young junkie, his recent announcement that he plans to perform in Israel has left me saddened and confused. After his recent tour in support of Indigenous rights in Canada, it doesn't make sense to me that he'll be turning his back on the rising tide of international support for Palestinian civil society, which has put out a call for a cultural boycott of Israel until Israel abides by international law and respects Palestinians' human rights. Tell Neil young NOW that you think he should reconsider and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people in their non-violent struggle for freedom.

Young's been a passionate defender of freedom throughout his career, writing songs like 'Ohio', protesting state violence against innocent civilians. While 4 Americans were shot dead at Kent State for protesting American war crimes in Southeast Asia,Israel shot dead 13 unarmed Palestinians (12 of whom were Israeli citizens) in 2001 during protests against Israel's violent campaign in the West Bank. To this day, no Israeli has been held accountable. Will Neil Young stay silent?

With 4 dead in Ohio, there were 1400 Palestinians murdered in Gaza, including roughly 400 children. The massacre took place during Israel's horrific assault on the besieged territory during 'Operation Cast Lead'. Will Neil Young listen to the Palestinians, or will he play to the tune of Israel's Apache helicopters and Hellfire missiles? Tell Neil Young to do what's right--stand up for human rights and social justice by refusing to play Israel.

A little Palestinian boy starving under the Assad regime’s siege of Yarmouk says that he is hungry would like one slice of bread, a cup of milk, food, that he has nothing, no food. The children’s mother tears a verbal hole in Assad, Obama, Abu Mazen, the leaders and the world who watch silently as the Palestinians of Yarmouk and the people of Syria are starved and slaughtered. She sarcastically asks the world’s animal rights campaigners to protest so that that those being starved to death by Assad can have the same living conditions as animals since that this would be far more than what they have now.

She points out that Palestinians and Syrians stand together against their oppression, whether from Assad or Israel, as they have stood together for thousands of years. She challenges Assad and the other cowardly and hypocritical leaders, both in Palestine and the rest of the region and world: "Okay, if you don’t want us here, send us back to our land, Palestine," knowing the leaders’ moral bankruptcy and hypocrisy all too well.

The day the world raged

Last Saturday, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, joined the day of Rage against the Prawer Plan. Israel’s Prawer Plan threatens to ethnically cleanse up to 70,000 Palestinian Bedouins with Israeli citizenship from their homes and land in the Naqab (the Negev).
