In August 2008, our two ramshackle boats, Free Gaza and Liberty, were hiding out somewhere in the Mediterranean, battling mechanical problems and bad weather as they slowly and furtively made their way to Cyprus. This book is an account from those of us on the boats and those Palestinians waiting for us in Gaza, a story of determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
Ramzy Baroud, a Palestinian author says about our book. “As ‘spooks’ lurked around, and military men declared war on two small boats, 44 civil society activists carried out an audacious act that fundamentally altered the nature of international solidarity with the Palestinians. This book must be read and read again, not only as a tribute to those who proved that ‘ordinary people’ can achieve extraordinary feats, but because it details an experience that must be carefully studied and widely discussed.”
Greta Berlin and Dr. Bill Dienst, the editors will receive no royalties. Most of the money raised will go to Gaza Community Mental Health Programme and for individual activist projects such as Gaza's Ark. Starting on Wednesday, August 23, the fourth anniversary of our sailing into Gaza, you can order the book for $15.00 and the ebook for $9.99 through our website at www.freedomsailors.com.
“Humanity is desperately ill; what is the cure? It is the medicine of solidarity, with any of us who are in peril. That is the message of this deeply moving and important book about the first voyage to break the illegal Israeli siege of Gaza. Reading like a fast-paced action movie, it moves us to tears, to smiles, to sadness, to consciousness . . . hopefully to action," are the eloquent words of novelist Alice Walker when she read the book.
