Israeli president Shimon Peres, declared in Cairo today his acceptance of the Arab peace initiative of 2002, which was endorsed during this year's Arab states summit meeting.Peres's position came during a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Husni Mubarak, in the Egyptian red resort town of Sharm Elshaikh.
The Israeli top official expressed the hope that the Israeli government will approve the initiative in order to continue current peace efforts that 'would lead to a genuine peace in the region'.
From his part, the Egyptian president welcomed Peres's stance, pointing out that the Arab states have long agreed to establishing normal relations with Israel in return for Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories, Israeli troops took over during the June4, 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
Mubarak also shed light on the latest developments of the peace process between Arab parties, such as the Palestinains and Syrians, and Israel.
