HIV causes state of emergency in Tel Aviv

Israel’s Ministry of Health has announced a state of emergency in the south of Tel Aviv following an outbreak of HIV in the area.

The ministry issued the announcement earlier this week after new figures indicated that 23 drug addicts and prostitutes have been infected with HIV and three others died due to the disease in the area since May 2012.

Israeli medical officials attribute the HIV outbreak to a change in the pattern of drug abuse caused by economic problems.

Drug addicts in Tel Aviv have turned to using new type of cheap narcotics which cost 20 shekels per dose, compared to heroin which costs 50 to 100 shekels per dose.

Contrary to heroin, the new drug does not need to be boiled and the addicts easily inject it after dissolving the drug in water.
