"I was deeply concerned by the loss of Palestinian and Israeli life in recent days, and by the substantial suffering and humanitarian needs in Gaza.
"Our hearts go out to Palestinian civilians who are in need of immediate food, clean water and basic medical care, and who have faced suffocating poverty for far too long.
"Just as the terror of rocket fire aimed at innocent Israelis, is intolerable, so, too, is a future without hope for the Palestinians."
But he also said Hamas that they must halt rocket fire on southern Israel and that Washington would continue to support Israel's right to defend itself.
"For years Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at innocent Israeli citizens. No democracy can tolerate such danger to its people," Obama said.
Dear President Obama
Israel must also be forced to abide by previous agreements. And if you were truly well informed, as a President should be, you would know that it was Israel that broke the previous cease fire by first resulting to honor their agreement to open the border crossings into Gaza for the necessities of life, then attacked Gaza on the very day you were elected President. Then and ONLY then did HAMAS, the legally elected government of Gaza, respond with rockets to defend itself.
HAMAS is not attacking Israel. It is Israel that is attacking and occupying Palestine. Please see United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 for the reality of the situation.
Israel is (to paraphrase Gandhi) master in someone else's house.
All the problems in the Middle East can be solved all at once if Israel will simply allow to the Palestinians only that which it demands for itself; a right to exist and a nation of their own. Had Israel acquiesced to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, which called for both an Israeli State and a Palestinian State, none of the bloodshed of the last 60 years would have occurred.
The basic problem remains that Israel demands for itself that which it refuses
to allow to anyone else.
