PCAS Chairman calls on releasing trapped Palestinian goods

GAZA STRIP, 7 January, 2008 (PCAS) – Palestinian Independent MP and Chairman of Popular Committee Against Siege (PCAS), called on releasing the Palestinian goods trapped in Israeli stores and seaports.

The Palestinian goods estimated of millions of American dollars are being kept "obligatory" in the Israel since June 2007.

In a press meeting with foreign media outlets, El Khoudary stated that, "These goods are being trapped with no legal reasons. This is immoral and against all laws and human accords. This causes a lot of losses for Palestinian merchants, wholesalers and traders in Gaza strip

Chairman added that, "in addition to holding their goods; Israel is forcing merchants to pay fees for the trapped goods in its seaports. Thus we ask this Question! Why they pay for what they don't possess"

Israeli restraint of Palestinian goods causes complete stoppage for Gaza's factories. These factories depend completely on imported raw materials trapped in Israeli seaports and stores. Additionally, this procedure doubles the number of jobless people.

El Khoudary pointed out that, "Merchants' economic situation is getting worst as they are not able to honor their commitments for suppliers abroad. They are not able to pay money due of trapped goods for suppliers. Therefore, this affects credibility of merchants and traders.

Chairman requested prompt procedures from all parts to intervene to end this obligatory mayhem.

Basically, Gaza strip depends on raw materials imported from outside. The domestic raw materials are not suitable for manufacturing and not enough. Israelis are constantly targeting the Palestinian economy in a step to prevent any kind of development.

In Gaza Strip, occupation measures have eliminated any glimpse of hope to sustain the fragile economy. The economy of Gaza strip is already frail by old Israeli policies, but with siege, this economy completely collapsed.

Essentially, Gaza Strip depends on goods exchange with Israel. However, by the start of siege Israeli occupation prevented row materials, goods, and foodstuff to get into Gaza as well as exporting Gaza products.

These procedures raised the ratio of poverty to frightful level as 85% of people turn out to be under poverty line. International Bank reported that poverty rate raised from 36% in 2006 to 67% by October 2007. Additionally, unemployment ratio has reached 65% making all Gazan unable to secure their basic humanitarian needs. A sharp decline hit the Income level of Gaza individual to b$ 650 annually.
