Palestine : ICJ Secretary General begins a visit to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) today began a six-day high-level mission, lead by its Secretary General, Nicholas Howen, to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), to explore and discuss with Palestinian and Israeli's issues relating to human rights and the rule of law.

During the six-day mission, from 2 to 7 December 2007, the ICJ delegation will spend two days in Gaza, two days in the West Bank and two days in Israel.

The ICJ delegation has requested meetings with the president of the Palestinian Authority and other senior officials in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, in addition to representatives from local NGOs and the legal community, as well as the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Chief Justice.

The ICJ delegation will also carry out visits on the ground in both Gaza and the West Bank, including to refugee camps and to witness the impact of the separation barrier and continuing Israeli settlements.

In Israel, the ICJ has requested meetings with senior government officials, the Israeli Chief Justice, the legal community and civil society.

On Friday 7 December, the ICJ will hold a press conference at the Ramattan Studios in Ramallah to share preliminary conclusions on its visit to Israel and the OPT.
