Israel - Palestine Prisoner Swap Fails
Gaza Strip, 18 March 2009 - (The PT) Israeli Premier, Ehud Olmert, announced negotiations over captured solider Gilad shalit have failed. Olmert said in a press conference held in Tel-aviv that negotiations failed to release Shalit. He stressed Israel cannot give what he calls concessions in exchange for Shalit's release. He added that his government, soon to leave office, would push hard for Shalit's freedom. Israels' refusal came under the pretext 450 of the prisons Hamas requested be released, prisoners with long or life sentences, are unacceptable choices. Olmert said his government agreed on many choices before the swap failed. He blamed the breakdown in negotiation on Hamas, stating his government agreed on many names, but can't accept further dictation. The Hamas movement debunked Israeli allegations over the failure, commenting Olmert's government doesn't want successful negotiations. They are leaving office soon and are no longer interested in a swap. Remarkably Hamas is requesting the release of approximately 1000 people including women, children, and youth long held in Israeli detention. It's worth mentioning Israel currently detains over 12 thousands Palestinians, often in poorly maintained facilities. Families are frequently denied access, unable to visit their imprisoned sons. Without constant international pressure, this denial of basic rights will continue. |

The latest Israeli onslaught has left massive damage and affected nearly all aspects of life. I have written many stories but have not had the time to publish them due to dedicating my efforts to the launching of the first Palestinian Electronic Newspaper (The Palestinian Telegraph – first edition out any day soon). A newspaper that would be very comprehensive and informative, dealing with Palestine, the Middle-East and world news. However, I was documenting the aftermath step by step - I toured in most of the devastated areas where I have seen massive insane damage and smelled death coming out of the rubble. I have heard many sad accounts of killing and slow death. I became introverted for some days and I lost the ability to write. I'm trying to gather all my energy to get the words out. In the meantime, I would like to let you live Gaza through my photos!
1- Gazan Children: Moments of Ecstasy out of War Rubble.
I spent a few special moments along with my friend Janet taking photos of young children in Juhr El Dik in middle of Gaza. The area was totally damaged. More than 150 houses partially and totally ruined. Many people were killed. Children there don't have any of the basics of life and thus nothing called fun or joy could be recognized there. It's only death and the fear of more in attendance. [more pics-

2- Rain and Snow Make Matters Worse After the Israeli Blitz.
For the first time ever Gaza saw snow. A nice white layer covered most of the streets. For a moment, destruction and devastation hid behind that nice white dress. Quickly, the snow melted and the rubble appeared again. [more pics-

3- Central Gaza Strip Devastated: Many Children Displaced.
The area witnessed heavy Israeli attacks during the three-week invasion. There is an account for the Abu Hajaj family where more than 30 members were kept in one house, which even had no bathroom. Thus, they had no choice but to relieve nature in the same room they were kept in. Additionally, two women were killed. For long hours the Red Cross and paramedics tried to rescue them but the soldiers said no until they died. [more pics-

4- A Journey of Torture: Trying to Leave the Gaza Jail
After the massacre, I managed to secure a UK visa to speak in parliament and tour Britain, hopefully to include Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Yet I was trapped and refused exit more than once to leave Gaza. I suffered a lot, as did thousands of other people who tried to cross. For three days I tried but I failed. It was nice to have my camera with me. We stayed in the buses for more than 12 hours at a time! You are invited to live the suffering here. [more pics-

A child full of light will never see again

As a Gazan journalist who is devastated by the holocaust the Israel army is perpetrating against us, I find myself at loss. The list of horrendous crimes committed by the Israeli army against Palestinians is endless and the crimes are countless.Should I write about the 45 evacuees who were massacred in their refuge at the United Nations-administered al-Fakhoura school? Should I write about the most horrifying crime when Red Cross personnel found four starving children who had spent four days with the dead bodies of their mothers and other relatives in the ruins of a house in the al-Zeitoun neighborhood?
Should I talk about the mass killing of the al-Dayaa family when 15 family members were killed when a "smart" bomb gently hit their five-story building?
What about the sadistic crime when the father of the al-Samuni family was executed before his wife and children? Or the carnage committed against the extended al-Samuni family when 29 members of the clan were concentrated in one house which was bombed and collapsed on top of them, killing them all?
These and so many other crimes have already been documented by Amnesty International and other human rights institutions. Many more are still untold stories. I can tell one story with my own words and my own camera -- that of eight-year-old Louay Sobeh. Little Louay could not know what this war had in store for him or his family.
About a week ago Louay and his family fled their house in Beit Lahiya town in northern Gaza. They were under heavy Israeli artillery fire as the Israeli army invaded the area at the outset of Israeli ground military operation. Sorrowfully, Louay started to narrate what he witnessed:
"Israeli shells started to rain down beside my house in northern Gaza. Rockets started to get closer to my house and many people were killed. My house got some shrapnel and part of rockets. Then, my grandmother and my family fled to Jabaliya where we sheltered in one of the [Untied Nations] schools. We stayed for three days where it was very very cold. When we fled our house in the night we didn't bring any luggage or clothes or food. My father, brother and other family members decided to go back to our house in the north to bring some clothes and food. We went early in the morning by car then all of a sudden people beside our car started to run left and right. I heard explosions and I felt as if I were flying in the sky. And I found myself in the hospital."
The Israeli bombing of Louay's father's car killed one of his brothers and injured others. The shocking fact is that Louay still doesn't know is that he lost his eyesight completely. He will never be able to see the light again! His grandmother was beside him trying to make him feel better. He still doesn't know that his brother was killed.
Before I left his room Louay told me, "I hope you visit me again and you will go with me to take footage and photos of the place where the car was hit. I will also make a scene for you about how I flew. But I need you to help me recover quickly so I can go to school again and play with some of my friends. I don't know if they are alive or not."
I was shocked by his talent and affected by his words. It's very brutal when a child like Louay becomes a victim for no reason. There must be a way for Louay and all the children of Palestine to have peace and rest, instead of the fire and hell they have witnessed.
Louay is one of the lucky ones: he is expected to be taken to Saudi Arabia to receive medical treatment sponsored by the Saudi king. For too many children such aid is too late and it still won't bring the light back to Louay's eyes.

Thousands of people appeared on the Gaza streets. Everybody is trying to explore what has happened to his relatives, houses and areas. I have documented a massive devastation throughout east, north and west of Gaza Strip.
The devastation storms everything needed for normal life. Houses, schools, hospitals, clinics, police stations, charities, universities and streets totally and partially destroyed.
More than 100 dead corps were found today by paramedics mostly civilians and a family of 8 members. Samouni family which was massacred before found 17 more dead bodies under the rubbles. Many families still seek rest of members and relatives who were lost during the war time.

1-Ceasfire started 2 Am Palestine time but the fire didn't stop.
2-Exchange of fire in the eastern part of Gaza City.
2-A phosphorous bomb hit the eastern part of Gaza City.
3-Israeli F16s launched 3 air strikes in the north and east part of Gaza City.
4-Israeli F16s broke into the Gaza Strip space causing a case of fear and panic for civilians.

1-Israeli air strike hit the eastern part of Gaza City. Many houses were harmed partially.
2-Israeli air forces raided on a United Nations' school northern Gaza, town of Bait Lahia. A woman and two children were killed and many wounded. Tens of people came to take the school as a shelter but it was hit!
3- Two Palestinians killed in east of Rafah City. Invading tanks destroyed sevetal houses and arrested some residents.
4-Three Palestinians killed by Phosphorous bombs fall down in many places in north of Gaza.
5- Two Palestinians killed after being injured in Khan yonis and their father was wounded. Here is an email I got from the friends of the family before they know what has happened to them!

I am writing to make a request for a good friend from Gaza (Amer Shurrab, UWCAD '01--03, Middlebury College '08.5). He just found out his father and two brothers were attacked while returning home from their farm during the 3-hr ceasefire. One brother (Kassab Shurrab) died, but the father (Mohammed Shurrab -64) and the remaining brother (Ibrahim-17) are now wounded and stranded in an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) controlled area. It's been 16 hours and emergency services are unable to reach them. The ambulances cannot travel there without permission from the IDF, and local aid groups claim that soldiers are blocking their access.
We have spoken with the local Red Cross in Khan Yunis and they have been trying to get the IDF's permission to get to the family, but have not been allowed. What we are asking, is if you could help by using any of your contacts (in the area and/or region, with NGOs, HR groups,media, etc), to bring attention and pressure in order to get permission for the ambulances to save two lives. We are very desperate and trying as many avenues as possible to help aid reach them. If you know even a foot soldier who might be able to push the ball by calling a local commander we would really appreciate any help.

Writing from the Occupied Gaza StripAs a Gazzan who is not affiliated to any political party; yet much concerned about what is taking place in my hometown, I meticulously track every piece of news related to the ongoing horrendous carnage which is perpetrated by the Israelis against the innocent civilians in Gaza. I was shocked when key staff of Bush’s outgoing Administration hold the Palestinian side in particular responsible for the recent onslaught in Gaza. I was also more devastated when some European officials and even few Arab leaders implicitly hold the same opinion. I am not sure though whether these officials do represent the voice and the good will of their peoples.
The most disturbing statement about the situation in Gaza was made by Dr. Rice, the American Secretary of States, when she declared that it was the Palestinian side who violated the truce and subsequently is responsible for what is happening in Gaza. Such a statement is easy to be made by Ms. Condi whose accomplishments in America’s foreign policy were spectacular! She promised that by 2008 the presidents vision of two states would be concretized.
It seems though that she succeeded in having two Palestinian cantons, one in Gaza, and the other in the West Bank ! Perhaps Dr. Rice was the most frequent visitor of the Middle East when compared with her predecessors. The normal expectation has been that Ms. Rice would have a deeper understanding of the Middle East crisis in general, and the Palestinian side in particular.
As Palestinians living in Gaza, we expected Ms. Rice to have done some research about the demography of Gaza. We also expected here to have done some investigations about the psyche of the true victims living in Gaza. We are not sure if Dr. Rice knows that more than seventy percent of the Palestinians living in Gaza are Palestinian refugees who had been kicked out of there towns and villages in Palestine .
We are not certain if Dr. Rice knows that most of the Israelis who replaced the displaced Palestinians had come from far off land, from diverse countries to establish a state on the land of other people. It seems that Ms. Rice is very happy to see the Palestinians suffer under siege ; she wants them to sing for peace in a big cage called Gaza and if they protest by sending home made rockets, she will hold them responsible for the mess! We hope though that Ms. Clinton, Condi’s successor would be the one who would improve the image of America in the Middle East and the Islamic world. We are sure that Ms. Clinton would be more objective and realistic when she deals with the Palestinian Issue.
The Palestinians have also been greatly disconcerted by the statements both President Bush and his deputy, Dick Chini . Both of them gave Israel the green light to kill the innocent civilians in Gaza. The moment they declared that Israel has the right to defend itself and hold the Palestinian side responsible for the what is happening in Gaza, Israel started mercilessly to target civilians. They started to kill complete families, small and extended. They started to target the unarmed civilians who mistakenly thought that UNRWA schools would be safe refuge for them.
History will witness that these two men had not done any good for the good Americans who elected them. They have successfully denigrated the image of America and the Americans in the Arab and the Muslim worlds. We in Palestine and in the Muslim world believe that Bush’s legacy would be a real burden for his successor, president elect Obamma. However, we strongly believe that Obama’s administration would do its best to regain the prestigious image of American in the Arab and the Muslim worlds , we are full of hope that the new administration would play the role of the objective peace broker in the Middle East. Hopefully it would be very real and realistic vision different from Bush’s vision !

1-Heavy artillery shelling on the central part of Gaza Strip. The area
was showered by tens of shells and a big cloud of strange smoke
covered the area.
2-Heavy fighting between Palestinian fighters and Israeli soldiers.
3-Israeli F16s bombarded the tunnels area in Rafah, many house
partially demolished and fire came into many others.
4-Rockets destroyed the old City Council of Gaza which is a historic
one built in 1910 in the Turkish period.
5-Bombings in east of Gaza and news that many killed near Hasanin clan.
6-Heavy shelling targeted Al Shikh Ijlin area.
7-Medical staff and Paramadics seek to evacuate tens of dead bodies
through the occupied strip, so far 4 dead bodied were found in Atatra
area northern Gaza.
8-Three bodies of dead people still in Johr El Dik area and paramedics
unable to bring them out. Between them an old man and young woman.
9-Bombings from the naval forces into Al Nusairat area leaving many
wounded persons.
10-Naval forces and gunboats shelled many targets in Gaza City.
11-Seven Palestinians killed in the northern area of Bait Lahia as
Israeli drones hit a car and shells rained into houses. Fire set in
many house and several people wounded. Two children were among

23-A paramedic killed in north of Gaza due to F16 rocket hit Hamoda building in north of Gaza. Another civilian killed and many wounded.
24-A car hit mid of Gaza's main park, many people wounded in the place.
25-Ayat Al Bana, 18, killed as rockets hit her house in north of Gaza.
26- Five civilians killed including two women and a child killed between them Amal Muhammad Al-Madhoun, and a man named Shaiboub Shambali from Beit Hanoun.
27- A rocket hit Al-Jaorn neighborhood of Jabaliya. House of Al-Amoudi from the Ayman Juda faction of Fatah's Al-Aqsa Brigades destroyed.
28- Maan: Missiles hit an Al-Masri home in Beit Lahiya as well as the Organization for the injured and Handicapped in the Sheikh Zaid area.
29-More than 35 Palestinians killed today, some from the fighters but mostly all of them are civilians.
30-F16 rockets hit house of Masri family resulted in a total damage for the house. Three Palestinians from the family were wounded in the clashes.
31- Saeed Al Omari,33, died due to his injury in Al Fakhora UNRWA school. The school witnessed a massacre a week ago that left 50 dead from civilians.
32- Drones' rocket targeted house of Al Aqail in Jabalia resulted in partial damage in his house.
33-F16s rockets hit house of Mahmoud Abu Matar in Bait Lahia. The house was burnt and destroyed totally.
34-Israeli tanks shelled office of Interior ministry. One civilian wounded and the office was totally damaged.
35-Bombings target house of Taha in north of Gaza, Twam area. The bombings killed afaf Jum'a and three children wounded from her children.
36-Medical sources found the dead body of child Abd Al Rahman ghaban who was killed by a drone yesterday.
37-Tasneem Al Rafati killed due to a rocket hit her house yesterday in Jbalia town.
38-A Palestinian killed in Jabalia town as a rocket from an Israeli drone hit him. The killed person still not known.

28- Maan: Missiles hit an Al-Masri home in Beit Lahiya as well as the
Organization for the injured and Handicapped in the Sheikh Zaid area.
29-More than 35 Palestinians killed today, some from the fighters but
mostly all of them are civilians.
30-F16 rockets hit house of Masri family resulted in a total damage
for the house. Three Palestinians from the family were wounded in the
clashes.
31- Saeed Al Omari,33, died due to his injury in Al Fakhora UNRWA
school. The school witnessed a massacre a week ago that left 50 dead

partial damage in his house.

house was burnt and destroyed totally.

bombings killed afaf Jum'a and three children wounded from her
children.
36-Medical sources found the dead body of child Abd Al Rahman ghaban
who was killed by a drone yesterday.
37-Tasneem Al Rafati killed due to a rocket hit her house yesterday in
Jbalia town.

Several untold stories still under the rubbles of Gaza devastation.
The more time this war lasts the more victims fall down, their stories
buried with them. Most of the Gaza Strip plunges into deep darkness
since the start of this war. I find several hardships to send out this
report due to power problem. Today, a rocket targeted my uncle's
house. My house got several splinters and rocket shrapnel. Thanks to
God, we all safe but I don't know what will happen next.

17-Israeli drone fired a rocket towards Al Karama bulidning leaving 4
people dead from one family and an old woman. They area, Ala Bashir
40, his wife Lamia, 40, their son Sohaib, 18, and Jamila zyada 75
years.
18-A Palestinian killed, Ebrahim Salma, 25, killed near Al Krama
buildings in bombings from Israeli air force.
19-Artillary shells hit house of Muhammad Khalaf in Jabalia. Two
Palestinians from the same killed, the dead are Ebrahim Khalad, 35,
and Belal Yahya,19. Around 10 wounded before the Israeli army
destroyed the house by bulldozers.
20-Five children killed in Bait Lahia due to Israeli bombings. Two of
them are sisters and 7 from others family. The killed ones are,
Haitham yaser Ma'rof 12, Jehan, 16, Fatima Ma'rof 16. Two others from
Ghaban family whose name are Khawla,16, Sahar,14.
21- Two Palestinians militants killed in Shija'ya area east of Gaza City.
22-A rocket targeted house of Tal'at hamoda resulted in the killing
of his two sons. One of them is an infant, Fares 1year and a half and
Muhmmad 22 years.
23-Head of Emergency and Ambulances: Death toll 880 and injured 3620.
24-A Palestinian killed in Rafah and several wounded south of the
occupied strip.
25-Israeli army raided on the borders with Egypt, many tunnels destroyed.
26-A Palestinian killed in Jabalai evening of today. Around 3 other
wounded, medical sources said.

The tanks were faced by heavy fightings resulted in the death of many
militants and few civilians. Muhammad Sada, Abd Al Kashif, Ebrahim
Hamada, Abdalla Shmalkh, Ali shamalkh, Esam Shamalkh, Mahmoud Shamalk,
Muhammd Tatr, Muhammad Al Naji, Ramzi Abu Ghanima and Ata Al Dahdods.
They all aged between 18 to 37.
28-An artillery shell hit house of Al Jilb in Tal al hawa area. A
70-year-oldman killed in the attack.
29-A rocket fired from Israeli drone killed a man aged 24, Nour Abu Amish.
30-Local radios: A Palestinian woman who was going to deliver a baby
and two of her relatives killed in Bait Lahia City. Many wounded in
the place as an artillery shell targeted them.
31-Artilary shells targeted many buildings in Tal al hawa area. Tens
wounded and 3 killed including a child aged 4 years.
32-Deadly clashes between Israeli army and Palestinian fighters near
Jabal Al Kashif area northern Gaza.
33-A Palestinian called, Osama Abu Rijila, killed by rocket fired from
a drone in Khan yonis. Another woman called, Hanan Al Najar.
34-Amnestey claimed that Israeli army is perpetrating War Crimes in Gaza.
35-Two rockets hit the area of Yaromk mid of Gaza, no one injured in the place.
36-Paramdicds found 14 dead bodies "corps" after Israeli tanks retreat
from Khan Yonis area.
37-Israeli army targeted house of Awad and Hanya northern Gaza Strip.
38-Continued shells from Artillery canons northern Gaza Strip.
39-Heavy shells on the Gaza port and Al Shati' Refugee camp.
40-Apachi helicopters fired at Al Tofah and Sah'f area east of Gaza.

A little earlier I'd been involved in a conversation with Dr. Abdel, an ophtalmologist, regarding the rumours that the Israeli Army had been showering us with non-conventional weapons, forbidden by the Geneva Convention, such as cluster bombs and white phosphorous. The very same that the Tsahal Army used in the last Lebanese war, as well as the US air force in Falluja, still violating international norms. In front of Al Auda hospital we witnessed and filmed white phosphorous bombs being used about five hundred metres from where we were, too far to be absolutely certain there were any civilians underneath the Israeli Apaches, but so terribly close to us all the same.The Geneva Treaty of 1980 forbids white phosphorous being used directly as a war weapon in civilian areas, allowing it only as a smoke screen or for lighting.
There's no doubt that using this weapon in Gaza, a strip of land concentrating the highest population rate in the world, is a crime all on its own. Doctor Abdel told me that at Al Shifa hospital they don't have the medical and military competence to say for sure whether the wounds they examined on certain corpses were indeed provoked by white phosphorous bullets.But on his word, in twenty years on the job he had never seen casualties like those now being carried into the ward.
He told me about the traumas to the skull, with the fractures to the vomer bone, the jaw, the cheekbones, tear duct, nasal and palatine bones showed signs of the collision of an immense force against the victim's face.
What he finds inexplicable is the total lack of eyeballs, which ought to leave a trace somewhere within the skull even in case of such a violent impact. Instead, we see Palestinian corpses coming into the hospitals without eyes at all, as if someone had removed them surgically before handing them over to the coroner.Israel has let us know that we've been granted a daily 3-hour truce, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
These statements from the Israeli military summit are considered by the people of Gaza as having the same reliability as the Hamas leaders' declarations that they've just provoked a massacre of enemy soldiers. Just to be clear on this point, the soldiers of Tel Aviv's worse enemy are the very same who fight under the Star of David. Yesterday a war ship off the coast of Gaza's port picked out a large group of alleged guerrilla fighters from the Palestinian Resistance, moving as a united front around Jabalia. They shot their cannons at them. But as it turned out, they were their own fellow soldiers, with the shooting resulting in three being killed and about twenty injured. No one here believes in the truces that Israel declares, and as it happens, today at 2:00 PM Rafah was under attack by the Israeli helicopters.
There was also yet another massacre of children in Jabalia: three little sisters aged 2, 4 and 6 from the Abed Rabbu family were slaughtered. Just half an hour earlier in Jabalia, once again the Red Crescent hospital's ambulances were under attack. Eva and Alberto, my ISM colleagues were on board that ambulance and managed to film everything, passing those videos and photos on to all the major media.Hassan was kneecapped, fresh from mourning the death of his friend Araf, a paramedic who was killed two days ago as he came in aid of the injured in Gaza City. They had stopped to pick up the body of a man languishing in agony in the middle of the road, when they were under fire by about ten shots from an Israeli sniper. One bullet hit Hassan in the knee and the ambulance was filled with holes.
We're now at a death toll of 688, in addition to 3,070 injured, 158 dead children and countless missing. Only yesterday, we counted 83 dead, 80 of which were civilians. Thankfully, the death toll on the Israeli side is still only at 4.Travelling towards Al Quds hospital, where I'll be working all night on the ambulances, as I raced along on board one of the very few fearless taxis left, zig-zagging to avoid the bombs, on the corner of one street I saw a group of dirty street urchins with tattered clothes, looking exactly like the "sciuscià" kids of the Italian afterwar period. They threw stones towards the sky with slingshots, at far away and unapproachable enemy who was toying with their lives.
This is a crazy metaphor, which could serve as a snapshot of the absurdity of this time and place.
