Land Theft and Destruction
Israeli Supreme Court Rules that Lands Confiscated in Lajoun from 486 Arab Families in 1953 for "Settlement Needs" will not be Returned to Them
In its ruling on 4 January 2010 , the Supreme Court of Israel rejected the appeal of 486 Arab families who demanded that land in the destroyed village of Lajoun confiscated from them in 1953 by Israel for "settlement needs" but used for a man-made forest be returned to them. The Arab families are all citizens of Israel and currently reside in Umm el-Fahem located in the center of the country. Adalah Attorneys Suhad Bishara and Adel Badeer, together with the private lawyers, Walid Asliya and Tawfiq Jabareen, submitted the appeal against the Nazareth District Court's decision of 18 September 2007.

Settlers arrested in Sheikh Jarrah
Around 6:30pm on Tuesday January 26, 2010 three Israeli teenage girls from the settler-occupied Gawi house in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah attacked two young Palestinian neighborhood boys with pepper spray cans. The Israeli girls also spray painted “Kahana Was Right” on a home in the neighborhood. Kahana was a founding member of the Israeli state, signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. He promoted ethnic cleansing and extermination of Palestinians. The defacing of Palestinian property with racist slogans is part of an ongoing Zionist campaign against settlement evacuation referred to as the “price tag campaign.”

Goldstone found that Israel’s collective punishment policy in Lebanon served as a model for Gaza, Adam Horowitz
As Israel prepares its response to the Goldstone Report, several articles indicate that its primary objective is to discredit the contention that it carried out, in thewords of Ethan Bronner,"an official plan to terrorize the Palestinian population." Today Haaretz reports that Israel’s response to the UN will seek to "reject most of the fundamental claims of the Goldstone report: it intentionally waged a punitive campaign against a civilian population, including the destruction of infrastructure." This promises to be one of the most contentious debates over the report in the coming months, and as part of our effort to post portions of the Goldstone Report there are several relevant portions we want to share. The excerpt below outlines Israel’s possible strategy and intention for the Gaza attack based on prior history and statements from Israeli military and political leaders. Because Israel refused to participate with the inquiry there was no way to interview them directly about this. The following passage is found of pages 250-258 of the report. I have removed the footnotes from the text, but you can find them in the original.

‘No safety for civilians’ (the unbearable likeness of Rabin and bin Laden)
In 1993, Israel launched Operation Accountability, a military campaign against southern Lebanon. The stated aim of Operation Accountability was to spread panic among the civilian population to cause them to flee north to Beirut and pressure the Lebanese Government to rein in Hezbollah, which had been firing rockets into Northern Israel. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin declared: "We will not permit a situation where there is no calm and security in Israel, while there is calm and security in southern Lebanon. Our goal is to make this clear. We expect the Lebanese Government, and those backing it, to control the rockets fired by Hezbollah. . . If there will be no quiet and safety for the northern settlements, there will be no quiet and safety for south Lebanon residents north of the security zone." The "security zone" was Lebanese territory that had been occupied by Israel’s military for more than a decade. The Operation was a resounding "success." Israel’s shelling killed over a hundred civilians, and hundreds of thousands of others fled northward in panic.

Arab Israeli's Auschwitz visit raises criticism
JERUSALEM -- An Israeli Arab lawmaker's plan to attend a Holocaust memorial ceremony at Auschwitz on Wednesday has drawn fierce criticism from both Arabs and some Jews, underscoring the deep divisions between the two sides over the legacy of the Nazi genocide. The uproar of Mohammed Barakeh's visit highlights the deep reluctance among many Arabs to acknowledge the Holocaust for fear of diminishing their own narrative of suffering at Israel's hands.

Obama Takes on the Muslim World, John Taylor
At the same time, President Obama did nothing to alleviate the sufferings of 1.4 million desperate Palestinians under Israeli siege in Gaza. How bad are conditions in Gaza? Some 80 percent of its residents rely on foreign assistance, and unemployment is above 40 percent. Medical supplies, fuel, and food are routinely held up at the Israeli border. Half of Gaza’s schools have not been repaired from Israel’s onslaught a year ago. Almost unbelievably, the Obama administration has made suffering in Gaza worse by pressuring the Egyptian government to close smuggling tunnels connecting Gaza with Egyptian Sinai, which provided an alternative means of moving a trickle of goods around the Israeli blockade. Although Americans may close their eyes to the miserable existence Israel is inflicting on the people of Gaza, who have done nothing to harm the United States and do not threaten us in any way, Americans may be certain that our complicity has not gone unnoticed across the Muslim world.

The adviser who never was, Philip Weiss
What I find crushing is that Khalidi was a friend/neighbor of Barack Obama in Chicago, indeed Obama described him as a teacher at Khalidi’s going-away party in 2003; and and of course in 2008 Khalidi was specifically targeted during the campaign and essentially purged from any possible advisory role. That’s an American tragedy. Here’s an intellectual with tremendous insight involving one of the most important foreign-policy problems that face us, with a unique connection to a rising politician, and poof, he’s gone, thanks to the Israel lobby. Here’s Barack Obama throwing Khalidi under the bus.

In the West they say it's rain, Amira Hass
Israel, via the Interior Ministry, continues to spit in the face of friendly countries, and those countries continue to admire the falling raindrops. The ministry's most recent gob of spit was the cancellation of the work visas that citizens of those countries who are employed by international NGOs have been getting for years. Instead, they will be given tourist visas that restrict their freedom of movement and activity. These people are usually employees of humanitarian organizations that operate among the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian upper bourgeoisie, As`ad Abukhalil
This is a sinister story of the Palestinian upper bourgeoisie. Their story has to be told: how people like Hasib Sabbagh, Basil `Aql, Munib Masri, Shuman, Sa`id Khuri among others were instrumental in propping up the leadership of Yasir `Arafat when his role was in dispute within the leadership of Fath in the late 1960s. They also steered the Fath movement in the direction of Saudi Arabia, and pushed Arafat to do his best to appease every US administration. They also were the ones who played a mediating role between Fath and the Phalanges during the civil war, when a boycott of the Phalanges was ostensibly observed by the Lebanese National Movement and the PLO. (There were individual Palestinian capitalists who invested in the left but I won't name them here because it may be bad for their businesses). "Mr. Sabbagh was also a member of the Palestine National Council and a donor to the Carter Center, founded in 1982 by former President Jimmy Carter." Spending money on the Carter Center? For what? To reward him for Camp David? [end]

Ethan Bronner: he offers his pen AND son to the Israeli army, As`ad Abukhalil
So the story is out now. Here are the details. I have received various messages about this matter, but they were general. Until a few days ago when I received a very detailed message (from Israel?) about the son of Ethan Bronner joining the Israeli army. The message had phone numbers and details that made it more reliable. I passed it on to comrade Electronic Ali, knowing that he would obtain verification. Here are the results. I wish to thank the anonymous person who sent me the tip in the first place. He/she does not want to be identified. (He addressed me as "Dear Mr. Angry"). Now the New York Times will assert daily that Bronner will adhere to the highest standards journalism that are practiced in the paper--standards that are best exemplified by the career of Judith Miller among many others. But to understand the situation, pose this question to the Foreign Editor of the Times: if the son of Taghreed El-Khodari (and I don't know if she has a son, but go along with the apt analogy) were to join the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, would she still be permitted to write for the paper? I can now see the propaganda articles by Ethan Bronner beginning with a refrain: my son is a hero among heroes. Oh, let me tell you about the killing adventures of the Israeli occupation army.... [end]

Israeli political scientist/leader Meron Benvenisti says that a binational entity is the inevitable solution in Israel/Palestine because the landgrab has created such a structure in fact. He points out that binationalism has long been a current in the ideological contention over Palestine and the political resolutions. Who knew? This is instructive reading:
The horrendous massacre of thousands of innocent victims, on Sept. 11 Sept. in New York and Washington, brought a great deal of attention to the subject of terrorism, Osama bin Laden, and al-Qaida. There has also been some insinuation, by the media and politicians, towards Arabs and Muslims, with reference to the Middle East and the Palestine conflict. But nowhere is there any mention of Israeli terrorism in relation to this conflict. Terrorism is defined in a variety of ways. An interesting definition is put forward by the noted intellectual Noam Chomsky, who wrote: “There is another defining property of ‘terrorism’ in contemporary newspeak: it refers to violent acts by Them, not Us.”

My family's ongoing Nakba story
One of the most traumatic effects wrought upon Palestinian society by the 1948 Nakba, or the dispossession of historic Palestine, is the physical separation it forced upon Palestinians, between those in the diaspora and the refugees, between those living in the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 and those who became citizens of Israel. Yet this process is ongoing to this very day, and targets even individual families. When prolific writers compile a decade or more of their writing in a single collection, changes in style, political outlook, or interpretive tendencies are readily apparent. Consistency in all these respects is visible too. So it's interesting to read Avi Shlaim's latest book -- Israel and Palestine: Reappraisals, Revisions, Refutations, a collection of articles published over two decades on Israeli historiography -- because he is aware of the changes and continuities in his thinking. However, The Electronic Intifada contributor Max Ajl finds, Shlaim's analytical gaze suffers from a blind spot when it comes to the ideology upon which Israel was founded.
