Israeli court backtracks on previous ruling to release kidnapped PA ministers, lawmakers

Ramallah - The Israeli military court in Ofer on Monday backtracked on its earlier ruling to release 21 kidnapped Palestinian ministers and parliament deputies on bail despite their detention for three months behind bars without any indictment list being charged against them.

The court decided to continue detaining the ministers and MPs, who include PLC speaker Dr. Aziz Duwaik, until all legal procedures against them were over.

The court claimed that "substantial evidence" could be used in preparing an indictment list against the "suspects", affirming that senior members of a "terrorist organization (in reference to Hamas) could not hide behind their official titles".

The court further said that Israel had a right to defend itself against "terrorism", which is the term used by Israeli courts and officials to describe Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation.

For his part, Dr. Duwaik described the court's ruling as "political" in nature rather than judicial.
