Starbucks may face a boycott if it partners with Soda Stream

Ramallah, 28 April 2014 — The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest
coalition in Palestinian civil society that is leading the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement for Palestinian rights, issued a stern warning to Starbucks today that if media reports about its intention to purchase a stake in SodaStream prove accurate, it would be deemed complicit in Israel’s violations of international law and would, therefore, face the prospects of popular boycotts and the possibility of legal action.
SodaStream is an Israeli company that manufactures in Maale Adumim, an illegal settlement in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT) and, as such, is deeply complicit in Israel’s violations of international law. Settlements are illegal under international law and constitute a war crime.[1]
Leading UN officials and human rights organizations, including Oxfam, have condemned settlement-based industries as profiting from the Israeli occupation and colluding in the denial of Palestinian rights.
The BDS movement has consistently targeted complicit Israeli and international corporations — involved in Israel’s occupation, settlements and other international law infringements — such as Sodatream, G4S, Ahava, Mekorot, Elbit, Veolia, Caterpillar, Africa Israel, all Israeli banks, among others.
A BDS campaign against Starbucks is expected to drastically affect its market share in the Arab world and many countries across the world. Veolia, a French company involved in several illegal Israeli projects in the OPT, has lost or was compelled to withdraw from contracts worth billions of dollars[2] in Sweden, the UK, Ireland, the US and elsewhere. Similarly, G4S, a British-Danish security conglomerate, lost lucrative contracts in Europe and South Africa.[3]
SodaStream markets itself as environmentally friendly to hide the fact that it is, after all, part of a colonial enterprise. More than 200 Palestinian families were expelled from their homes to make way for the construction of Maale Adumim in the 1990s, in defiance of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel has announced its intentions to forcibly displace another 2,300 Palestinians from their land in order to facilitate further expansion of the settlement.[4]
Palestinian trade unions have consistently rejected any suggestion that the oppressive reality of living under a brutal occupation — sometimes leaving Palestinians with no choice but to export fresh produce through complicit Israeli companies or work in illegal settlements — is a reason not to take action to end international complicity in human rights violations.[5] Palestinian workers employed by SodaStream have explained that they face systematic discrimination and are “treated like slaves”.
Far from reducing its direct contribution to human rights abuses, SodaStream’s plan to open a factory inside Israel beside Rahat, a planned Palestinian Bedouin township in the Naqab (Negev) desert, amounts to participation in Israel’s plans to forcibly displace at least 40,000 Palestinian Bedouins into townships, a policy that has been widely condemned by the UN[6], the European Parliament and leading human rights organisations.[7]
Starbucks’ reported interest in SodaStream comes at a time when civil society, the private sector and governments across the world are increasingly shunning businesses that contribute to Israel’s occupation and violations of international law. International supporters of Palestinian rights have responded to calls for boycotts of SodaStream, organising protests across hundreds of stores and many European retailers have pledged not to sell products produced in illegal Israeli settlements. The Dutch and UK governments have recently warned businesses to avoid business links with illegal Israeli settlements.[8]
Following the recent high profile outcry about actor Scarlett Johansson’s association with SodaStream, investment analysts have stated that SodaStream “comes with baggage” and that their illegal settlement factory is “a touchstone for controversy”.  Indeed, their first quarter 2014 results show a drop of 14% in their share price.[9]
As a signatory to the UN Global Compact, Starbucks claims to respect human rights in its operations. Given the wide scale violations of human rights that are part and parcel of the forced displacement that Israel has pursued in both Maale Adumim and the Naqab desert, any relationship with SodaStream would clearly conflict with the principles of the UN Global Compact.
Starbucks should abandon any plans it may have to purchase a stake in or enter into a partnership with SodaStream or any other company profiting from Israel’s occupation and settlements to avoid becoming a target for the BDS movement.

Starbucks Canadian coffee - Still Supporting zionists & Israel

Steve Johnson calls the Canadian Starbucks HQ to ask are their staff aware about the blind support for the zionist atrocity known as the illegal state of israel.
Typically, as is the case with most of these phonecalls, the staff are completely unaware about the extent of support Starbucks has for the genocide against the Palestinians. Read more about it here:

Given we live in the internet technology age, people REALLY should be much more aware these days about what their employers ARE REALLY SUPPORTING. If my $5 phone call can wake up at least one ignorant person. Then I feel I have achieved something at least.
Please feel free to share this video unchanged and unedited or re-upload yourself. Waking up others is how change is going to happen.

Gaza protest forces Starbucks to close in Beirut a example that should happen evey where

I am all for a protest in support of Palestinians but really...does anyone listen....you have to disrupt where the money comes from for Israel and something could be learned from the following story if it would happen on a worldwide level.

A action that needs to happen all over the world. Dozens of Lebanese protestors angry at Israel's onslaught of the Gaza Strip forced the closure Tuesday of a Starbucks coffee shop in Beirut, calling for a boycott of the U.S.-based chain.

"We want to revive the boycott campaign in Lebanon and the Arab countries," demonstration organizer Yara Harakeh, 23, told AFP, adding: "We have begun with Starbucks."

Demonstrators wearing the iconic black and white Palestinian keffiyeh scarf stood outside the Starbucks in Beirut's Hamra shopping district, yelling out: "Boycott the Zionists for the Arab Palestine."

Staff inside the coffee shop refused comment, and eventually switched off the lights, locked the doors and left.

AlArabiya.net recently reported that top American companies are donating their profits to Israel to support its blitz of Gaza.

The report called on consumers to boycott several major U.S.-based companies like McDonalds, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and cigarette maker Phillip Morris.

Israel's deadly assault on Gaza has sparked protests across the world as hundreds of thousands decried the war that has left at least over 952 Palestinians dead and at least 3,000 woundedand they are still counting.

Boycott Starbucks!

Starbucks Cups
Gun in one hand, Starbucks in the other - ready to dominate the world..
Soldiers posing in front of the first makeshift Starbucks store in Afghanistan,

In March 2005 Starbucks arrived in Guantanamo Bay, the illegal US detention and torture centre, to open a chain of its "We Proudly Brew" outlets. One of the outlets is just a "stone's throw" from the barbed wire behind which prisoners are caged and tortured. Apparently torturing is thirsty work, Starbucks is selling 1400 cups a day at Guantanamo.
The United Nations has demanded the closure of the torture den, Starbucks are not bothered they say "We refrain from taking a position on the legality of the detention center" . For Starbucks its commitment to the military is more than just business, their Customer Relations say "Starbucks has the deepest respect and admiration for U.S. military.. who risk their lives to protect Americans and our values of freedom and democracy". Starbucks in return, according to Petty Officer Barry Tate, is doing its share by helping " lift the morale" of the guards and interrogator' s at Guantanamo Bay.
It could be argued that with its blind support for the US military, Starbucks is itself implicated in the war crimes being committed at the illegal torture den of Guantanamo Bay. Its another reason for people of conscience to boycott Starbucks.

Starbucks CEO Calls Himself ‘an Active Zionist,’ but Can You Find It Anywhere on the Web?

Starbucks CEO Calls Himself ‘an Active Zionist,’ but Can You Find It Anywhere on the Web?
Barbara Ferguson, Arab News
It started out as an Internet parody of Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz thanking customers for supporting Starbucks and Israel.
The spoof read, in part: “I want to thank you for making Starbucks the $6.4 billion global company it is today… Every latte you drink at Starbucks is a contribution to the close alliance between the United States and Israel, in fact it is — as I was assured when being honored with the “Israel 50th Anniversary Friend of Zion Tribute Award” — key to Israel’s long-term PR success. Your daily frappucino helps pay for student projects in North America and Israel, presenting them with the badly needed Israeli perspective of the Intifada.”
This parody caught fire throughout the Middle East. But, was it true? And how much of Starbucks does Schultz own.?
On June 6, 2003, the Seattle Times wrote: “Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz cashed in $17.5 million in stock options and still owns about 4 percent of the company.”
A quick check on the Internet “Starbucks-Israel” didn’t reveal anything fishy. Starbucks Headquarters issued a statement last month denying the close alliance, called “Starbucks Rumor Response,” and dated July 21, 2006, it read: “Neither Chairman Howard Schultz nor Starbucks fund or support the Israeli Army. Starbucks is a non-political organization and does not support individual political causes.”
However, googling “Starbucks-Israeli settlements,” revealed a goldmine of information.
A Muslim website had the most extensive information about Starbucks CEO Schultz: http://www.inminds.co.uk/boycott-starbucks.html
On this website, it notes an award given to Schultz is no longer listed on the Starbucks website: “In 1998 he was honored by the Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah with ‘The Israel 50th Anniversary Friend of Zion Tribute Award’ for his services to the Zionist state in ‘playing a key role in promoting close alliance between the United States and Israel.”
The Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah funds Israeli arms fairs…” The site adds that this listing was removed from Starbucks home page.”
The original page listing Howard Schultz Israel Award as an award for Starbucks can still be seen on their site.
The new page is shown below with no mention of the Israeli connection.”
Another search revealed that Robert Fisk, who is a contributing editor to Arab News, wrote about Schultz back on June 14, 2002. Fisk wrote that Starbucks “has been trying to damp down its pro-Israeli image, telling protesters who have written to the company that its chief executive, Howard Schultz, who is himself Jewish, does not believe that terrorism is representative of the Palestinian people.”
Fast forward to this summer. On July 22, 2006, the “Friends of Al-Aqsa and Peace in Palestine” wrote on problems between Oxfam and Starbucks on their website http://www.aqsa.org.uk/news—detail.aspx?newsid=700.
‘Friends’ notes that Oxfam ended a yearlong contract with Starbucks.
“Oxfam denied allegations that Muslim groups were behind its decision to terminate its collaboration with coffee conglomerate Starbucks.” ‘Friends’ also notes that Starbucks failed in Israel: “Starbucks …invested in Israel — a joint venture with Israeli conglomerate Delek Group for Starbucks outlets in Israel.”But the coffee company made heavy losses.
And in April 2003, it announced that all its 6 cafes in Israel will be shut down and that it has ended its partnership with Delek.” Josh Ruebner, Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator for the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, is adamant about boycotting Starbucks.
Attending a recent conference, Ruebner said he and his colleagues were “embarrassed and upset” when they were served Starbucks coffee. He wrote a letter to the organizers, saying: “many conference participants and conference organizers were highly disturbed by the serving of Starbucks coffee at our conference.
“Schultz has been praised by the Israeli government for sponsoring pro-Israel, anti-Palestinian seminars on college campuses (“Losing the Media Battle,” Jerusalem Report, April 22, 2002) and his company has sponsored a fund-raising event for the Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund, an organization which engages in crass anti-Palestinian propaganda to raise money to support the families of Israeli soldiers who have died while protecting Israel’s illegal military occupation of Palestinian territories.”
Reubner wrote: “Because the CEO of Starbucks is so supportive of Israel and the system of apartheid that it has foisted on the Palestinian people, we strongly urge you to reconsider your arrangement to serve Starbucks products”.
He added, “We all have an obligation to make sure that corporations with which we do business are using those profits to promote human rights, peace, and justice, rather than racial discrimination, military occupation, and colonization.”
Several interview requests by this reporter — made both by telephone and emails — to Starbucks corporate press office were never returned. All this gives one food for thought when sipping one’s next cappuccino.
