Encyclopedia released to protect history from being falsified by Israel
First ever encyclopedia documenting the Gaza war released Sunday |
|
| GAZA, (PIC)-- The “creativity” studies and training foundation released Sunday the first ever electronic encyclopedia that documents Israel's late 2008 early 2009 war on the Gaza Strip to mark the war's second anniversary as it approaches. The encyclopedia, dubbed “the Gaza Holocaust”, is the product of drawn out efforts by the foundation's strategic research and studies center, said foundation head Mohammed al-Madhoun. “More than 120 of the foundation's field researchers contributed to this remarkable work, as well as many more from research centers, rights foundations, and ministries.” The idea, sparked at the time of Israel's aggression, was to document the suffering and crimes that occurred during the war. “The encyclopedia contributes to the decay of Israel's legitimacy in the framework of a battle that stripped Israel of its moral and humanitarian legitimacy.” The reference book attempts to correct the past mistake of not recording Israel's crimes. “The encyclopedia therefore protects history from being falsified, and provides a reliable reference with voice and picture.” The name “the Gaza Holocaust” was part of the name battle that Israel had been playing in an attempt to monopolize names. The named heroic disaster was therefore named the holocaust. Madhoun called on media agencies to deliver the encyclopedia to every household in the world. “The encyclopedia should be translated into English, and then continued to be developed and supported with more data and documents.” He added that the reference followed a new approach in documenting history and building cases against criminals in light of the current information revolution. |

FBI: 'HAVE YOU NOW OR HAVE YOU EVER TRAVELLED TO ISRAEL/PALESTINE?'
Been to Israel/Palestine lately? The FBI may come knocking on your door.

By the time she was in high school, Sarah Smith had already been named one of the 100 most influential women in Chicago by Chicago’s business magazine, Crain’s. Now Smith, who happens to be Jewish, has been subpoenaed by the FBI to appear before a grand jury on January 25 to explain her trip to Israel-Palestine with two Palestinian women friends. (As terrifying as this whole episode is for everyone involved, it says something about Palestinian safety that only Smith has come forward publicly.) All three young Chicago residents have been subpoenaed, joining ranks with 14 other peace activists from the Midwest who have been similarly targeted in recent months.
Here is Sarah Smith’s full statement from a December 6 press conference:
Friday morning, December 3, I received a phone call from an FBI agent. He asked if I had about 30 minutes to sit down and speak with him so he could ask me some questions. I asked about what and he said he “was not at liberty to discuss it.” I then asked if I needed a lawyer present and he said it was up to me but that I was not in any trouble and that they just had a few questions.Smith’s father, Stan Smith, added “I think Patrick Fitzgerald, the US District Attorney, Robert Parker of the FBI need to see my daughter and her friends and apologize to them. And I think President Obama, who was elected in 2008 because he said he would stop this sort of thing, should make a point on his next trip to Chicago to personally apologize to my daughter and her friends for how his government is intimidating them.”
I felt something suspicious about him telling me he wanted to ask me some questions, but he would not tell me what these questions were. So I said that I had to consult a lawyer and check my schedule and that I would get back to him. I reiterated that it would be easier for me to meet him if I knew why an FBI agent wanted to sit down with me. He then said that it had to deal with the trip I took this summer. He then emphasized, “I think you know which one I’m talking about.”
The trip I took last summer was to Israel and Palestine. I am Jewish and wanted to see first hand what life is like for Israelis and Palestinians. If I went on the standard tour to Israel, I would not be shown how Palestinians live. So I went on a tour that showed me both worlds, Israel, and the Israeli occupied Palestinian West Bank. I went with 2 Palestinian-American friends. You would think Jews and Palestinians going together to visit Israel and Palestine is something the U.S. government would encourage.
Instead, we are now being ordered by the FBI to go before a Grand Jury for going on that trip. The US government says it supports peace between Israel and Palestine. It says it supports separate Israeli and Palestinian states.
So why does the FBI investigate us because we went to see the Palestinian land? Top US government leaders meet with Palestinian leaders, so why does the FBI investigate us because we talked to average Palestinians on the street?
I went there so I could make up my own mind and talk about what I saw. It seems to me our government wants to hide what Israel is doing to Palestinians. I would like to thank the Committee Against Political Repression for standing up for me and my friends. You can learn about case at stopFBI.net, and please make a donation there. Or you can make a donation for our legal expenses: to NLG Foundation, memo line: FBI raids and mail it to Sarah Smith, 2961 S. Bonaparte, Chicago, IL 60608
Meanwhile, there are actions across the country to protest this crackdown on peace activists (sign the petition here). Firedoglake’s Kevin Gosztola has this report:
The hunting down of activists began on September 24th when the FBI raided homes and offices of activists from Minneapolis and Chicago. Computers, phones, documents and other personal items were seized and the FBI officially subpoenaed 14 activists to appear before a Grand Jury. The FBI began to contact members of the “peace community” and ask them what they knew about the subpoenaed activists’ “material support for terrorism.”Democracy anyone?
The attorneys representing the activists have noted “the current definition of “material support’ can cover just about anything, like providing humanitarian aid that ends up in the hands of a group tagged as ‘terrorist’ by the US government, or posting a link to an informational website. The implications of this law, as it is being used, are troubling to anyone who does community organizing, or anyone who does journalistic reporting or academic research on wars, conflicts or controversial movements.”
Months later, the activists in Minneapolis and Chicago have not been charged with a crime, but they continue to face possible jail time if they refuse to go before a Grand Jury and participate in this “witch hunt.” They have yet to have their belongings, which were seized by the FBI, returned.

CHANUKAH IN EAST JERUSALEM; DOGS, BULLDOZERS AND TEAR-GAS

Israeli Army’s dog attacking a Palestinian woman!Israeli forces have unleashed their dogs on the Palestinians decrying the oppressive policies Jerusalem implements on the occupied Palestinian territories. The forces used the “savage” animals, sound bombs and tear gas to suppress the protest which erupted before the Israeli troops razed two residences in the Arab neighborhood of Issawiya to the ground, the Palestine News Network (PNN) reported Tuesday. One of the protesters sustained injury from a dog attack and four other Palestinians were tear-gassed by Israeli forces, AFP reported.
Israeli military also flattened one building elsewhere in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), PNN said, adding that home owners destroyed one residence in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood to avoid the demolition fee imposed by Israeli authorities.
Israel claimed its existence in 1948 during full-scale military operations against the Arab world, forcing 711,000 Palestinians to leave their homeland.

Western and Israeli hypocrisy in the portrayal of victims
Paul J. Balles considers how Western and Israeli media and propagandists conceal the crimes meted out by the US and Israel by anonymizing their victims while using graphic imagery when the victims are their own.
To the ancient Greeks, the Thracians, Egyptians, Persians, Indians, Celts, Germans, Phoenicians, Etruscans, Romans and Carthaginians were all barbarians. In other words, if one wasn't Greek, he was a barbarian.
In an article in The Wall Street Journal (28 August 2008), Judea Pearl referred to Samir Kuntar, recently released from Israeli prisons, as the "arch-symbol of barbarity". Pearl is the father of slain journalist Daniel Pearl.
Daniel Pearl, remember, was captured and beheaded in Karachi, Pakistan, for which British national of Pakistani origin, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, was sentenced to death in 2002. More recently (2007), Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, at a military hearing in Guantanamo, said that he personally beheaded Pearl.
The modern "barbarians" are not simply members of other tribes as they were in Greek and Roman civilizations or in the raids of the Vikings. Samir Kuntar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed have all seen themselves in the romantic image of the “noble savage” and they have been hated by the tribes in which they committed their barbaric acts. How do these young men become savages?
Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh's life took a turn when he volunteered for charity work in Bosnia in late 1992. The Bosnian war was raging, and he saw atrocities committed by Serbians on Bosnian Muslims. He returned to Britain a committed Muslim radical. In 1993, he emerged in Pakistan as a member of a militant group fighting for the liberation of Kashmir from India.
In 1994, Saeed began training at a camp in Afghanistan. Soon he was teaching the classes. He developed close ties with al-Qaeda while training there. By the end of the year, he became known as Osama bin Laden’s “favoured son” or “my special son”. From then on, Saeed was a fully-fledged terrorist, expressing his hatred in barbaric deeds against the “enemies of Islam”.
What about the "alleged chief planner" of the 9/11 attacks? His crime was so barbaric that he deserved to be paid back with nothing less than the most sophisticated barbarity. The Red Cross reported that he had been kept naked for more than a month and claimed that he had been "kept alternately in suffocating heat and in a painfully cold room."
A New York Times article says the prisoners considered the "most excruciating" of the methods was being shackled to the ceiling and being forced to stand for as long as eight hours. This well-known torture technique has severe physical effects on the victim’s body.
There you have but a brief look into the measures and counter measures of three "noble savages" full of hatred. There's no question that they are all savages, but are they noble? Judging from the celebration in Lebanon at the release of Samir Kuntar, he is a noble savage.
Are these three any more savage than their captors? Do they have any less reason to be barbarians than their torturers? Look at some numbers: 3000 were killed in the World Trade Centre for which al-Qaeda and the Taliban became the objects of American hatred, and for which they paid with more than 15,000 civilian deaths.
Using 9/11 as a false excuse to invade Iraq, America endured casualties of 4150 sacrificed American savages while Iraqis slaughtered since the US invaded Iraq amounts to 1,255,026, as of 30 August 2008. Who are the greater savages?
Judea Pearl dubbed Samir Kuntar “the arch-symbol of barbarity”. Simply reading about how he allegedly slaughtered a four-year-old girl by smashing her head with a rifle butt makes his deed unforgivably sickening to any half-decent human being, just as it was agonizing to read about Daniel Pearl’s beheading.
Wasn’t the genocide of thousands in Sabra and Shatila refugee camps or the deaths of Palestinian children in Gaza and the West Bank or the liquidation of 1,255,026 Iraqis also agonizing to read about? NO! Unlike the descriptive images used to portray the deaths meted out by the three barbarians, the equally savage and brutal killings of Palestinians and Iraqis and Afghans have not been described in horrid detail. They are merely numbers.
But numbers can be revealing if the reader can transpose the grim image of one victim to many innocents. According to the website If Americans Knew, since September 2000 Palestinians have killed 123 Israeli children and Israelis have killed 1050 Palestinian children. Does that make Israelis almost ten times more barbaric than Palestinians?
Most people aren’t sickened by numbers. Expert propagandists in the US and Israel know how to sicken audiences with the images of others’ brutality. They never provide the same graphic imagery for the horrid crimes they commit. When Al-Jazeera conveys the images equivalent to those used by the West to stimulate hatred of the “barbarians”, they are labelled a biased medium.
Those celebrating the release of Samir Kuntar have seen the gruesome pictures of slain and mangled bodies of their children – the images that never show the savage barbarity of Imperial America and Israel. They are barbarians by any definition; but so are the unnamed, anonymous savages of Israel and the United States who slaughter innocents.
Human chain in Rafah urges Palestinian national unity
The protest was organized by the National Association for Democracy and Law in association with dozens of civil society organizations in the Gaza Strip
A Hamas-Fatah unity government disintegrated in June 2007 following deadly fighting between Hamas and Fatah in the Gaza Strip. Since then Hamas has remained in control of Gaza, Fatah the West Bank.
Ibrahim Mu'ammar, the director of the association, said the rivalry between the two movements has a negative affect on the human rights of Palestinians. He urged civil society organizations to speak out and demand national unity.
He also appealed to Arab countries to place pressure on both rivals to achieve national unity.
Representatives of other organizing groups delivered speeches calling on Hamas and Fatah to give priority to higher Palestinian interests over their own partisan interests. The rivalry, they said, threatens the Palestinian cause itself.
Palestinian Journalists: Stuck in Internal Strife
More than 100 Palestinian journalists from the West Bank
and Gaza Strip came together to discuss their role in
a society that is becoming increasingly divided along
geographic and political lines.
The journalists came together for a 3-day conference
entitled, "Palestinian Media: Fourth Estate or
Exacerbating Internal Strife?" organized by the
Jerusalem-based Arab Media Network (AMIN).
The conference participants came up with a list of terms
deemed to be "inciteful" and creating added tension
between Fatah and Hamas. The actions of some journalists
were deemed to be "increasing the chances for more
fighting and destroying the social fabric of
Palestinian society," according to the
conference's closing statement.
The conference featured a heated debate between the
head of the state-run Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation,
Basem Abu Sumaya, and Fathi Hammad, the head of the
PBC's main rival, Al-Aqsa TV.
Hammad promised during his videoconference speech to end
the use of all terminology in the list. Abu Samaya promised
to allow Hamas representatives on the state-run radio and TV.
The journalists lamented the role of the semi-defunct
Palestinian Journalists' Union, which has been headed
by Naim Toubasi for more than two decades. Elections for
a new union leader have not been held for 12 years,
and most Palestinian journalists are not members of the
union. The journalists said they would lobby the Palestinian
Authority to enact a Media Law that would force new
union elections and empower the union to defend its members.
"We wanted to create a dialogue between
Palestinian journalists in this era of internal
division and strife," said Khaled Abu Aker,
who co-founded AMIN in 1996. "We want the
Palestinian journalist to be a media
professional, not some tool to be used by
politicians who took advantage of the
Palestinian media to incite the public.
This has led to the demise of Palestinian
journalism."

Al-Nakba,the catastrophe of the Palestinian people
who were ethnically cleansed from their homes, lands,
and villages by the Zionists before and after the creation
of the State of Israel on May 15th 1948!
More than 750,000 Palestinians were made
homeless refugees, forced to live in inhumane
conditions and squalid refugee camps that were
set up by the UN. These refugee camps were only
supposed to serve as a "temporary" solution until the
refugees were permitted to go back home according to
UN Resolution 194 (The Right of Return), The Geneva
Conventions regarding refugees, and other Internationally
Recognized Laws! Now after more than 57 years, the
Refugees are still living in camps while Israel continues to
ignore countless UN
Resolutions. In fact, till this very day, Israel
continues to create yet more homeless refugees
in Palestine, some for the 3rd and
4th time in their lives!
