Leonard Cohen's Israel concert sells out in a day / AI an accomplice

Tickets for a Leonard Cohen concert to benefit Palestinian and Israeli peace groups sold out in less than a day, an Israeli ticket agent said Sunday.

The 47,000 tickets for the Sept. 24 concert at a stadium near Tel Aviv went on sale at 8:30 Saturday evening, and by Sunday afternoon they were all gone, ticket agent Avi Messing told Israel's Channel 2 TV.

"All of Israel is coming to watch Leonard Cohen. It's really great," Messing said.

Prices ranged from $90 to $315.

Cohen entertained Israeli troops during the 1973 Mideast war and last performed in Israel in 1975.

Adding Israel to his current world tour brought complaints from Palestinian sympathizers, and British fans posted a plea on the social networking site Facebook asking him to cancel the date in response to Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip in December and January.

In an open letter to Amnesty International, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) states: "In May, PACBI called on singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen to heed the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel and avoid complicity with Israel’s violations of international law by cancelling his planned September concert in Israel, particularly in view of Israel’s war crimes in Gaza earlier this year. Sadly, Amnesty International USA has agreed to cooperate with Cohen in dealing with Israel on the basis of business as usual.

"Amnesty International USA will serve as sponsor of a new fund that will whitewash the money raised at Cohen’s concert in Israel by using it to finance programs for 'peace.' Being one of the world’s strongest proponents of human rights and international law, you shall thus be subverting a non-violent, effective effort by Palestinian and international civil society to end Israel's violations of international law and human rights principles. We call on you to be true to your values and immediately withdraw support for Leonard Cohen’s ill-conceived concert in Israel." Read More

So in an effort to express their grief and resilience, a group of rappers from the Gaza Strip are getting the word out, the only way they know how.

New Gaza Song : Shame On You

Cat Stevens Denied Entry to Israel

You'd think that if Shimon Peres invited you to Israel, getting a visa would be snap. After all, Peres does happen to be the country's President, and surely that counts for something. But apparently not if you're a musician named Yusuf Islam, formerly known as the folksy singer- songwriter Cat Stevens. Stevens, a Briton who converted to Islam over 30 years ago, was invited to play at a 10th anniversary bash for the Peres Center for Peace, along with Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. According to the Israeli press, Stevens was excited about the show and was going to play a re-written version of his hit "Peace Train" alluding to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.


But the show's producer Irit Tenhangel made a late check with the Israeli security services, who said that Stevens would not be allowed into Israel, even if it was at President Peres' request.


In 2000, Stevens had been denied entry to Israel for allegedly making contributions to the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas. "This put me in a very embarrassing situation with Stevens and his personal manager," Tenhangel told Ynetnews.com. "What am I supposed to tell them now, that the State of Israel doesn't want him to come and talk about peace voluntarily?" She added: "He may have supported Hamas once, but the fact that a singer who converted to Islam wants to come to Israel and express his support for peace and we're not letting him do so infuriates me."


A name like Yusuf Islam on a passport does tend to set alarm bells ringing, and not just in Israel. In 2004, the singer, educator and philanthropist was barred from visiting the U.S. He was suspected of being an Islamic militant, but it's not as though he was plotting to meet anybody subversive, just that most wholesome of American icons: country singer Dolly Parton, who had recorded several of Stevens' songs. Half Swedish and half Cypriot, Stevens was your typical, hard-partying young pop star of the 1970s when a near-drowning sent him on a spiritual quest, often explored through his songs, that ended with his embrace of Islam in 1977. He jettisoned his pop idol career, and dedicated himself to Islamic religious study. Using royalties from his 60 million record sales, he set up Islamic charities helping famine victims and orphans around the world.


Israeli officials say that this mishap over Stevens' invite could easily have been avoided if the organizers of Peres' party had checked first with the foreign ministry. The law says that anyone declared non grata and expelled, as Stevens was in 2000, cannot be allowed back into Israel for at least 10 years.


And as for Stevens now being a "Man of Peace", as he is often described, "his actions speak louder than his music", says Government Press Spokesman Daniel Seaman. "A man of peace doesn't give money to terrorist organizations that killed Israelis and those Palestinians who disagreed with them."


Nevertheless, denying Israeli entry to Stevens, a musician who advocates co-existence between Israel and the Palestinians, and who is a respected figure throughout the Islamic world, undercuts the message of peace that Pres. Peres is trying to convey to his wary Arab neighbors. Happy anniversary, Mr President.

The Peace Train Won’t be Stopping in Israel

I am more disappointed in the fact that Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) accepted the invitation to perform in Israel than the fact that he was denied entry, on ’security grounds’.

I am even more disappointed that Mercedes Sousa accepted the invitation as well and is here at the moment to perform. This, despite many personal appeals to her to reconsider performing here…. which is an endorsement of the Apartheid system.

Sousa is, or at least should be, aware of the role the International Solidarity Movements played in helping to restore Democracy to her native Argentina during the days of the fascist dictatorship there. Is it not expecting to much for a person such as herself, a well known advocate of Human Rights, to do the same here?
SHAME ON YOU MERCEDES SOUSA!

As for Islam, his actions are nothing less than a disgrace. For a man of his stature to turn his back on his own Islamic brothers and sisters is an unforgivable crime. Much more was expected of him.
SHAME ON YOU YUSUF ISLAM!!

The performances were to be at the Peres Centre for Peace, which is an insult in itself. To name a centre dedicated to Peace after an avowed war criminal is unforgivable. The man has lied his way through over 60 years of Israel’s history and continues to do so.

Paul McCartney Embraces Israeli Apartheid

OCCUPIED RAMALLAH, 15 September 2008

PACBI regrets Paul McCartney's insistence on going ahead with his planned
gig in Israel despite many appeals to him to cancel it due to Israel's
crimes against the Palestinians, particularly its current brutally
devastating and illegal siege of 1.5 million in occupied Gaza. Not only
will such a concert violate the Palestinian cultural boycott against
Israel; it will convey a message that McCartney either condones or
apathetically ignores Israel's reality as a colonial power and an
apartheid state that oppresses the indigenous Palestinians and occupies
Arab land. Just as in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa,
Palestinians are asking international artists to exercise their moral
responsibility by staying away from Israel until freedom, justice,
equality and human rights are respected for all.

In a recent media interview McCartney confessed, "I was approached by
different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I
refused. I do what I think, and I have many friends who support Israel."
Public opinion in the UK, however, does not support Israel's occupation
and violation of international law. Media reports revealed, furthermore,
that many in Liverpool itself are apprehensive towards McCartney's gig in
Israel. Now Sir Paul will have far fewer friends across the world, those
who still uphold human rights and abhor apartheid.

Adding insult to injury, McCartney told the media, "I've heard so many
great things about Tel Aviv and Israel, but hearing is one thing and
experiencing it for yourself is another." Hadn't he heard even greater
things about Sun City in South Africa, too? Would that have been enough
for him to ignore the South African anti-apartheid movement's call for
boycott?

Israel is recognized by the United Nations and the overwhelming majority
of nations across the world as a repressive occupying power that maintains
illegal colonies in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT) and
persistently violates international law.

Despite our denunciation of Paul McCartney's effective complicity in
covering up Israel's occupation and system of racial oppression, the
Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel
(PACBI) strongly and unequivocally condemns any violent threats made
against him or, for that matter, against any other cultural or academic
figure who decides to visit Israel in violation of the Palestinian boycott
of Israel. As a civil resistance movement whose message is anchored in an
unwavering commitment to universal human rights and ethical
responsibility, we strive to persuade people, to appeal to their minds and
hearts to boycott Israel -- through campaigns of public awareness raising
and non-violent pressure -- due to its occupation, racist oppression and
unique system of apartheid.

If the Al Manar will not post her songs ...We will

It became known that Hizbollah ,through the Manar TV ,will not play any of Julia Butros' songs . Julia Butros ,for those who do not know ,is one the best Arab Artists that are committed to our Arab National causes. Her song after the last July war in Lebanon was from a speech that Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah gave that became a "Trade Mark" of Honesty and Resistance .
