Israeli occupation soldier shoots blindfolded, handcuffed Palestinian detainee

An Israeli occupation army soldier earlier this month shot from a close range and injured a handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian detainee, an Israeli human rights group revealed Sunday.

According to Btselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the incident took place on 7 July, in Nilin, a village in the central West Bank.

Palestinians and foreign peace activists hold regular and mostly non-violent protests against the confiscation by Israel of private Palestinian land for the construction of the Separation Wall, the gigantic barrier Israel is building in the area.

Vast swaths of Palestinian farms, orchards and groves have been seized by Israel under the pretext of building the wall, most of which is built deep in the West Bank far away from the so-called Green Line, the former armistice line between Israel proper and the occupied Palestinian territory.

According to a Btselem report, Israeli occupation soldiers stopped and detained Ashraf Abu Rahma, 27, who was then blindfolded and handcuffed for about half an hour.

Btselem quoted eyewitnesses as saying that Abu Rahma was beaten by soldiers who then dragged him to an army Jeep. There, a video clip showed one soldier aiming his rifle at the Abu Rahmas legs from a distance of about 1.5 meters and firing a rubber-coated steel bullet at him.

Numerous Palestinians have been killed or maimed by Israeli army rubber bullets which can be quite deadly especially if fired from a short distance.

Abu Rahma told Btselem that the bullet hit him in the left toe. He reportedly received treatment by an army medic before he was set free.

The video clips of the incident were provided by a 14-year-old Palestinian girl from Niilin who filmed the incident from her house in the village. The identity of the girl has not been disclosed.

Israeli soldiers and settlers have lately escalated their abuse of mostly unprotected Palestinians.

In June, a number of masked Israeli settlers, carrying clubs, savagely attacked elderly Palestinian peasants and shepherds near the town of Yatta in the southern West Bank causing them grievous injuries.

Similarly, Jewish settlers earlier this month assaulted a Palestinian from the village of Sammou, also in the southern West Bank.

The settlers tied up the 35-year-old Palestinian teacher to a power pole and brutally beat him.

Human rights organizations operating in the West Bank have documented many cases of abuse by Israeli soldiers, especially by a notorious paramilitary brigade known as the Border Police.

Abuse cases included soldiers forcing Palestinian laborers to drink soldiers urines, forcing Palestinians to curse their religion, and forcing them to sing songs praising Israel and the Border policeman.

A few weeks ago, the Israeli television channel-10 revealed that Israeli soldiers manning a roadblock in the northern West Bank coerced a Palestinian worker to chant in Arabic the following refrain Wahad Hummas, wahad fool, Allah Iyhayee Mishmar Gvul (one dish of Hummus, one dish of beans, Allah salutes the Border Police.

Normally, such abusive behavior on the part of Israeli soldiers goes unpunished which human rights groups contend only serves to encourage further abuse

Eyewitness report: Funeral of 17 year old student attacked by same Israeli soldiers who killed him

Hebron / - The Israeli military has been slowly escalating its intimidation tactics in Beit Ommar over the last three days, often patrolling the streets at sundown, provoking youth by parking outside of the mosque and waiting for young boys to come and throw stones before shooting tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets.

The increasing terrorization of the village culminated atapproximately 9:30 pm Friday when a 17 year old boy, Mohammed Anwar Al-Alami, was shot in the heart and killed.

Soldiers first entered the southern West Bank’s town at 4 pm and began slowly circling the village, often stopping in the center of town, shooting a few tear gas canisters, but otherwise staying in their jeeps. They were not searching houses nor made any other indication that they were engaging in any authorized operation. Shortly after sundown, at approximately 9 pm, they began arresting residents: blindfolding and handcuffing nine men in total and bringing them to the entrance of the village. Four were later released, five remain in Israeli custody. Several more jeeps and Armored Personnel Carriers (APC's) entered the village. Young boys began throwing stones and empty bottles which bounced off the armored military vehicles harmlessly. Still, for the Israeli military a rock against reinforced metal is reason enough to end the life of a young man, about to finish his final exams and graduate from high school.

Mohammed was quickly rushed to the hospital, but he had been shot in the chest and the bullet entered his heart, killing him almost instantly.

When international activists approached the soldiers one was thrown to the ground and his camera was stolen from him. Another observer with the Christian Peacemaker Teams, who was on crutches, was also knocked to the ground by the commander of the Israeli forces. The video tape and memory cards of the cameras of the CPT activists were all taken, erasing evidence of the assault on them presumably in an attempt to cover-up the egregiously excessive violence used by the Israeli army against young people.

On Saturday at 10:30 am international and Palestinian activists with CPT and Palestine Solidarity Project joined the community as they took the body from the hospital in Hebron and drove in the funeral procession back to Beit Ommar. The long line of cars with Palestinian and political faction flags hanging out the windows was soon accompanied by two Israeli military jeeps. Not given a moment to grieve, the Israeli military soon brought in reinforcements and gathered a mass of jeeps and soldiers near the cemetery.

After a visit to the murdered student's home and the mosque, the entire village, several thousand people, marched down the main road to the cemetery. The soldiers, not wanting to allow the participants to use the main entrance of the cemetery, ostensibly because of its proximity to their reinforced concrete watchtower that looms over the entrance to the village, parked two jeeps on the main road, cutting off the residents and forcing them to a side road leading to the back entrance to the cemetery. Community leaders, trying to prevent a confrontation with the soldiers, managed to persuade most of the procession on to the side road; approximately 50 or so, however, were insistent on their right to approach where their dead are laid to rest from the front entrance.

These men walked past the parked jeeps and gathered at the entrance to the cemetery as well as gathering on the roof of a house across the street from the watchtower. It was at that time that the same commander who oversaw the killing of the boy the night before got out of his jeep. The member of the Christian Peacemakers Team who had been pushed to the ground the night before approached the soldiers with a video camera, reminding the commander that the CPT member was now a witness to the funeral of the boy his unit had killed the night before and demanding that he, a Palestinian-American, and other Palestinians, be treated with the dignity they deserve. The soldiers soon began pushing the crowd back towards the cemetery and threw a sound grenade, effectively disrupting not only the crowd, but the family's moment to mourn the death of a young man.

Residents soon returned to their homes while young men, many of whom were fellow students of Mohammed’s, began to throw stones at the armored jeeps. The soldiers, rather than leaving the village which would have both eliminated the source of tension and allowed the community to mourn properly, instead decided they had not 'taught their lesson’ well enough and again invaded the village. This time, at least two were injured: one young boy was hit with a ricochet in the head, and another was light injured when his arm was grazed by a bullet.

Members of PSP and CPT again went out into the street to document. Although they were less than 50 meters away and clearly visible to the soldiers, they also had to soon take cover as live ammunition, rather than "crowd-dispersal weaponry" such as tear gas or rubber-coated steel bullets which are less lethal, went whizzing past their heads. And so it continued that lethal force, when less lethal means were well at their disposal (though some of the soldiers were outfitted with plastic-coated steel bullets which are against international law) was used against stone-throwing children and international activists. It is this low-level war—the murder of a child here and there, the unending expansion of Israeli settlements and theft of Palestinian land—that is ongoing in the West Bank; less obvious, perhaps, than the brutal attacks on Gaza, but no less devastating.

Israeli non-government organization accuses IOF of abusing Palestinian detainees

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), a non-government organization, has accused the Israeli occupation forces of regularly abusing Palestinian detainees including minors.

The PCATI, in its annual report published on Sunday, registered 90 cases of abuse in which violence was used against those detainees either on their arrest, on their way to detention or during incarceration.

It said that the abuse was also reported against minors who should enjoy special protection in accordance with the international law, and added, "The soldiers do not treat the minors with care and often, as various reports show, they take advantage of their weakness".

"Many reports state that the alleged abuse occurred while the Palestinians were bound and did not constitute a threat to the soldiers," the organization said in its report that covered the period from June 2006 to October 2007.

PCATI also denounced the IOF troops' use of soldiers to terrorize and humiliate Palestinian prisoners.

The IOF command claimed that the army worked by and respected the international laws concerning detention of persons suspected of involvement in "terrorist acts".

Israeli army forces Hebron orphanage and shopping mall to shut

Orphanage charity closed, IDF claims links with Hamas

The Islamic Study Centre in the centre of Hebron is
a charity dedicated to the welfare and education of
orphans in Hebron, it boasts a library and a study
centre built into a shopping complex, and a school
with working transport.

However last Tuesday the IOF raided both the
shopping centre and the school. In the shopping centre
they blew the locks off the doors with live ammunition
and then confiscated computers, files, papers and other
equipment. They then went into the school and
confiscated everything including the chairs and tables
as well as four buses and a car. The High Commander
had drawn up a notice which explicitly stated that the
shopping centre will close on the 1st of May this year,
and anyone caught with a business open after this day
will face five years imprisonment. The allegation given
for this closure and invasion was that the orphanage
had links with Hamas and was training and
recruiting for them.

The whole shopping centre now faces closure and
many Palestinians will have no jobs. The shopping
centre also contained health care facilities for the
community including and orthopedic centre.

The commander kindly left some numbers that
Palestinians could appeal to if they felt this was unfair,
other than this the IOF said they feel that these facilities
pose “an unwarranted danger to the IDF and as such
cannot be allowed to remain open”.

IOF Soldiers torture 2 Palestinian Children and try to maim one

"The Nafha society defending prisoners
and human rights charged that the
assault points to only a fraction
of what the IOF soldiers are really
doing against Palestinian prisoners,
especially children."

Three IOF soldiers were recently
involved in a violent assault on two
Palestinian children who were less
than 16 years old in an area near
Nablus in the West Bank, a Hebrew
website revealed on Saturday.

The website of the Yediot
Ahronot said that the soldiers kicked and beat the two kids
and even tried to maim one of them when they put a
heater near to his face. The paper would not elaborate,
however, on the physical or psychological results of such
an assault on the two children.

The paper noted that members of the Kfir army unit
had been notorious for a number of similar acts against
Palestinian civilians in recent weeks.

The Nafha society defending prisoners and human
rights charged that the assault points to only a fraction
of what the IOF soldiers are really doing against
Palestinian prisoners, especially children.

The society accused the IOA of "legalizing torture"
while telling the media of its concern with the "
reputation of the Israeli army".

IOF troops kill elderly Palestinian in W. Bank incursion

Two Palestinian citizens, including 70-year-old man, were killed by IOF troops as tens of IOF armored vehicles pushed into the West Bank city of Nablus at dawn Tuesday, Palestinian sources affirmed.

The sources identified the elderly Palestinian as Abd Shaker Wazeer, affirming that he was shot dead by a band of Israeli soldiers immediately after he opened the door of his house on their orders.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but, the sources added, he died along the way before he could reach the hospital due to the soldiers' deliberate blocking of the ambulance that transported him.

The second Palestinian fatality was identified as Bassim Abu Surreyya, one of the Palestinian resistance field commanders in Nablus city, who died of wounds he had sustained in earlier clashes with the invading IOF troops in the refugee camp.

Three other Palestinian fighters were critically wounded when the intruding IOF troops unleashed a missile at one of the houses in the city the fighters had sought as shelter.

Fierce armed clashes erupted between tens of Israeli occupation soldiers backed by at least 30 armored vehicles and apache choppers on the one hand, and few Palestinian resistance fighters belong to the Faris Al-Lail (Night Knight) armed group which is an offshoot of Fatah faction on the other hand.

The IOF troops were seen cordoning off the Ettehad and the Watani hospital in the city with the aim to block and arrest wounded Palestinian fighters in the event they are brought to those hospitals for treatment.

However, local eyewitnesses affirmed that the fighting was still going on at the Biet Ein Al-Ma'a refugee camp, a stronghold of the Faris Al-Lail group, amidst persistent reports that the IOF troops were posing to demolish one of the buildings in the camp on a number of Palestinian fighters entrenched inside and rejecting calls from IOF troops to give up.

The armed group was one of the Palestinian resistance factions that rejected Israel's "deceptive" amnesty and refused to lay down their weapons, vowing to "continue on the path of resistance till the full liberation of occupied Palestine".

Tens of Fatah fighters believed to be associated with the mutiny trend within the faction had surrendered their weapons to the PA security apparatuses on Israeli and Abbas promises that they won't be pursued or arrested by the IOF troops.

Yet, facts on the ground proved that those promises were only fictitious pledges as IOF troops arrested a number of those fighters after they surrendered and gave up the resistance option.
