Who Profits: Veolia owns, operates Tovlan landfill in OPT for Israeli wast

Veolia is not only still involved in the illegal Israeli tram project connecting Israeli's colonies to Jerusalem, it also owns and operates (through its subsidiaries), as confirmed below, the infamous Tovlan landfill which processes Israeli waste on occupied Palestinian land in direct violation of international law.

Though it lost billions of dollars worth of contracts worldwide (particularly in the UK, Sweden and Ireland) and had to close shop in many countries, due to BDS and other factors, Veolia has yet to end its complicity in Israel's grave violations of international law. It may take the loss of more lucrative contracts, especially in the US, to feel more heat. Then its share owners will reconsider.

Veolia's Involvement in the Occupied Jordan Valley – An Update

• Confirmation from the Civil Administration - waste from within Israel is transferred to Veolia's site in the Jordan Valley
• YARV Sherutei Noy 1985 – a subsidiary of Veolia has won a tender for waste collection services from IDF bases in the Jordan valley

On October 10^th, 2011 the Israeli Civil Administration responded to a Freedom of Information law application that had been submitted by 'Who Profits' a month earlier. The application was regarding the Tovlan landfill - a waste-disposal site operated by Veolia in the occupied Jordan Valley. Previous research work carried out by the 'LifeSource' collective indicated that the waste transferred to the landfill originates within Israel. The Civil Administration's reply officially confirms this and clarifies that Veolia is responsible for the transferring of Israeli waste to the company's site in the OPT.

Furthermore, the civil administration's response includes a list of companies authorized to transfer waste to the Tovlan landfill, among them two subsidiaries of Veolia Environmental Services Israel: TMM - Integrated Recycling Services and YARV Sherutei Noy 1985. In mid-August of this year, the latter won a tender issued by the Ministry of Defense for waste collection services from the IDF bases in the Jordan Valley.

Veolia is a multi-national French company operating in the fields of water, waste management, energy and transport services. Through its subsidiaries, Veolia is involved in the operation of the light rail in Jerusalem – a project that was designed to connect the city of Jerusalem with the illegal settlements around it. Additionally, the company operates bus services to Israeli settlements in the West Bank along road 443, which has been referred to as an "apartheid road", because Palestinians are prohibited from driving on almost all segments of it.

Through its subsidiary, Veolia Environmental Services Israel (which bought T.M.M. Integrated Recycling Services), the company owns and operates the Tovlan landfill in the occupied Jordan Valley. The waste transferred to the landfill originates in recycling factories within Israel and in settlements in the West Bank. The company uses captured Palestinian land and natural resources for the needs of Israeli civilians on both sides of the green line. Under international law, Israel is prohibited from using land in occupied territory for the sole benefit of its own civilian population and, thus, the company may be complicit in Israel's alleged violations of international law.

The civil administration's response includes the following information:

1. Eight Israeli companies hold permits to transfer waste to the Tovlan landfill: Eden Brief Recycling Services; Rami Shitawi – Poultry Maintenance; YARV – Sherutei Noy 1985; Ramnir; Mifat 1965; SH Market - Trade and Recycle; Sharonim Recycling; and TMM - Integrated Recycling Services.
2. The waste transferred to the Tovlan site is brought from recycling factories in the areas of HaSharon, Sgula, Haifa and Afula and from the Hiriya site (southeast of Tel Aviv). All of these sites are located within Israel.
3. The waste transferred to the landfill consists of municipal solid waste, construction waste, sterilized medical waste and electronic waste. The civil administration mentioned that there is no permit for bringing hazardous waste into the site.
4. The average amount of waste that originates inside Israel and is permitted to be buried in the site is 19,000 tons a month.
5. At the moment there are no expansion plans for the site.

Even a lowly dishwasher can easily find some poor slob further down in the pecking order to sneer and spit at. So be thankful for migrant workers, prostitutes, and homeless street people.

Always remember that if everyone like you were economically secure and socially privileged like us, there would be no one left to fill all those boring, dangerous, low-paid jobs in our economy. And no one to fight our wars for us, or blindly follow orders in our totalitarian corporate institutions. And certainly no one to meekly go to their grave without having lived a full and creative life. So please, keep up the good work!

You also probably don't have the same greedy, compulsive drive to possess wealth, power, and prestige that we have. And even though you may sincerely want to change the way you live, you're also afraid of the very change you desire, thus keeping you and others like you in a nervous state of limbo. So you go through life mechanically playing your assigned social role, terrified what others would think should you ever dare to "break out of the mold".

Naturally, we try to play you off against each other whenever it suits our purposes: high-waged workers against low-waged, unionized against non-unionized, Black against White, male against female, democrat against republican, American workers against Japanese against Mexican against.... We continually push your wages down and take your money by invoking "foreign competition," "the law of supply and demand," "national security," "too big to fail" or "the bloated federal deficit." We throw you on the unemployed scrap heap if you step out of line or jeopardize our profits. And to give you an occasional break from the monotony of our daily economic blackmail, we allow you to participate in our stage-managed electoral shell games, better known to you ordinary folks as "elections." Happily, you haven't a clue as to what's really happening — instead, you blame "Aliens," "Tree-hugging Environmentalists," "Niggers," "Homos", "Wet backs", "Welfare Queens," and countless others for your troubled situation.

We're also very pleased that many of you still embrace the "work ethic," even though most jobs in our economy degrade the environment, undermine your physical and emotional health, and basically suck your one and only life right out of you. We obviously don't know much about work, but we're sure glad you do!

Of course, life could be different. Society could be intelligently organized to meet the real needs of the general population. You and others like you could collectively fight to free yourselves from our domination. But you don't know that. In fact, you can't even imagine that another way of life is possible. And that's probably the greatest, most significant achievement of our system — robbing you of your imagination, your creativity, your ability to think and act for yourself.

Is Arab oil more precious than Arab blood?
This is a question that many Palestinians are
asking these days in light of the oil-rich
Arab states’ reluctance to help the
Palestinians withstand the
most ferocious onslaught ever being waged by Zionism against
the Palestinian people’s very existence.

Today, four Arab states, (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab
Emirates and Qatar) produce nearly 20 million barrels of crude
oil per day. Translated into dollars, these four states alone make
more than $2 billion dollars per day, or $60 billion a month,
nearly $720 billion a year.

Now how much of this colossal amount of money goes to prop
up Palestinian steadfastness in the face of diabolical Zionism,
which seeks to occupy, enslave and probably annihilate Arabs
and Muslims in the Middle East and beyond?

How much of it is used to enable the 1.5 million Gazans to
overcome Israel’s continuing Nazi-like blockade of the Gaza
Strip, which has already killed and mutilated thousands and
reduced the entire coastal enclave into a huge concentration camp?

How much of this money goes to help Palestinian college
students stay in their country and not leave because they
don’t have sufficient financial means to pay for their
education at Palestinian colleges and universities?

The Arab Sheikhs, Emirs and Kings won’t have to sacrifice
much of their oil and gas revenue for the sake of Palestine
and its suffering people.

A day’s revenue of Arab oil and gas can solve all the Palestinian
people’s financial problems. It can enable Palestinian authorities
to pay for the salaries of all civil servants and help poor college
students continue their education for an entire year. It can also
serve to subsidize basic consumer products such as bread, sugar
and cooking oil, especially for the most impoverished segments
of society.

Needless to say, a sincere effort on the part of these rich Arab
states would enable Palestinians to put up the most effective
resistance to Israel’s ethnic cleansing designs without having
to worry about providing a loaf of bread for one’s kids at the
end of the day.

It would also save a lot of Palestinian blood since many Palestinians,
desperately struggling to feed their children, often risk their lives by
crossing into Israel in order to find work.

More to the point, a meaningful Arab solidarity with the Palestinians
in their enduring plight would make it more difficult for the genocidal
terrorist Israeli state to blackmail the hopelessly weak Palestinian
Authority in Ramallah into surrendering to Israeli dictates and
perpetuating the national rift between Fatah and Hamas.

This writer knows of many college students who had to quit college
because they can’t pay their tuition. We are talking about intelligent
young men and women who want to stay put in their ancestral
homeland in order to consolidate and perpetuate Arab-Islamic
presence in this land.

But in order to do so, they need a real helping hand from their
supposed Arab and Muslim brothers, many of them are at a loss
as to what to do with the billions of dollars they have amassed.

What value do Arab billions have if they can’t help preserve the
Al-Aqsa Mosque from Israel’s nefarious designs?

What value do these billions or trillions of dollars have if they can’t
shield a Palestinian child in Rafah or Khan Younis from the real
specter of starvation, imposed by a Nazi state constantly
emboldened by Arab betrayal of the struggling Palestinians who
are made to pay in blood the price of Arab-Muslim weakness and
subservience to an evil empire called the United States?

What value does Arab money have if they can’t develop a potent
media machine to counter Zionist lies, propaganda and hasbara
against Islam, Muslims, the Palestinians and the Arabs?

To be sure, the oil-rich Arab states can do a lot to help the Palestinians
who are at the forefront of a historical confrontation against Zionist
expansionism and regional hegemony.

The Saudis, for example, can easily resolve the nagging salary problem;
the Kuwaitis can build three or four modern hospitals in Gaza and the
West Bank, which would help save the lives of thousands of Palestinians
who die of curable illnesses and treatable injuries inflicted by
Zionist terrorists.

The UAE can cover the college expenses of a few thousand university
students in Gaza and the West Bank. Qatar, which has good open
relations with Israel, can use its connections to help the Palestinians
have their own power-generating plants. Qatar, probably in cooperation
with other states, can pay Egypt to provide regular fuel and electricity
supplies to the Gaza Strip, thus enabling the tormented Gazans to
free themselves from constant Israeli blackmail.

And the four states combined can donate to Egypt the 1.5 billion dollars
which the US uses to emasculate the collective will of 80 million Egyptians.

So, why can’t these rulers do it? Do they believe that their billions are
more important than the blood and lives of Palestinian children? Or
more sacred than Arab-Islamic dignity? Shame on them if they do.

Do they think that the Almighty will forgive them for betraying the
Palestinians? They will die sooner or later and will be brought into
account by the Lord of the Universe.

Perhaps the real problem has more to do with their inability and less with
their willingness and inclination. But this is no excuse at all. In fact, it is
an excuse that is more obscene than a sin, because then surrendering
the national will to a foreign master borders on national and
religious apostasy.

The Palestinian people may forgive these rich Arabs for their
clarion failure to fight Zionism, the common enemy of Arabs and
Muslims, for reasons known to everyone.

But the rich Arabs can never be forgiven for accepting
enslavement by the evil American empire and for
squandering their billions on trivialities and excessively lavish
lifestyles while Arab children are starving to death in the Gaza Strip.

Shame on you. God will not forgive you, and history will not be kind to you.

inspiring news stories of the month:

A flurry of pink slips fluttered over the job sector as
corporate payrolls were sliced like sour pie.
Foreclosures are skyrocketing and new home sales across
the nation are plummeting faster than Britney
Spears' serotonin levels. A nasty recession is
either creeping or flooding in, depending on your perspective
and how recently you purchased your home and/or tried to
dump your Google stock.

Meanwhile, the largest corporation in the world, the one
which has consistently raked in the largest and most
appalling profits of any organization on Earth, a
company so powerful and deeply influential to the
machinations of our own nation, our government, the
globe, so ingrained and unstoppable that no president,
no administration, no nuclear warhead to its CEO's
home planet stands a chance of slowing it down or altering
its behavior in any significant way because there is simply far,
far too much money involved in its nefarious endeavors,
has recently posted
the largest profit of any company in American history.

Yes, the Exxon Mobil corporation sucked in a staggering $11.7
billion in a single quarter (more than $40 billion for the year, a
new record for an American company) thanks largely to
record-breaking prices for a barrel of oil, which are of
course only record-breaking because, well, the Bush administration
has essentially engineered the economy and launched a bogus
war and desiccated the American idea exactly so they would be.

Oh yes, two more trifling stories, buried beneath the nauseating
Exxon headlines and the tales of looming economic struggle:
More U.S. soldiers are dead in Iraq as a result of Bush's failed
war, U.S. military spending in 2009 will reach
its highest levels since WWII ($515 billion), insurgents
have taken to strapping suicide bombs to
mentally retarded women and nearly 100 more civilians are
dead in another bombing in Baghdad because the
U.S. troop surge is working so well. Oh wait.

Do you feel the righteousness? The inspiration? Can you
sense the deep connection between these stories? Because
the truth is, they merely add up to the heartwarming conclusion that,
without a doubt, American capitalism is still firing on all cylinders. Praise!

Yes, the system is working just exactly as those in control of the nation
right now wish it to be working, with the most dominant,
ruthless corporations in the world (Exxon joined by Shell,
Chevron, BP, ConocoPhilips et al) still making the most money
in the most destabilizing and environmentally devastating manner
possible, while poor uneducated kids die like chattel in
unwinnable wars trying to secure a tiny bit more of the
source of their profit.

And somewhere in between, the nation's overall health and
well-being are sacrificed like dazed lambs to an ignorant god,
with our government offering up only the most meager, desultory
efforts to keep it functional so as to not induce all-out fire
-and-pitchfork revolt.

Is that too simplistic? Too reductive? Not even close. Hell, you
can distill it down even further. For if you understand, as most
sentient creatures on the planet now do, that this "war" is merely a
particularly bloody chunk of a particularly brutal, fraudulent national
energy policy spearheaded by Dick Cheney and beloved by Saudi
Arabia and Halliburton and most of Texas, then it is no stretch at all
to say that we are sending American kids to their deaths exactly
so Exxon can continue to make $3 billion in a single month
(or: $100 million per day, $4 million per hour, or more
than $1,000 every. Single. Second).

Or how about this for dark math: $40 billion for the year,
4,000 dead U.S. soldiers ... that's a cool $10 million in pure
profit for every American soldier BushCo has thrown to the
wolves of petroleum, just for 2007 alone. Even if you factor in the
20,000 wounded, paralyzed and brain damaged U.S. soldiers —
not to mention the record number of military suicides —
on a body-by-body basis, you've still got yourself one hell of a
sweet profit margin. See Dick Cheney's vile, crooked little grin?
Now you know where it comes from.

This, you might argue, is perhaps the bleakest way to look at
American capitalism, as an instrument of war and death and
gluttony that serves only the most cretinous corporate masters
at the expense of, well, everyone else.
This is the capitalism of the hard right, a particularly ruthless type that
happily sacrifices quite literally everything — the environment, health,
human life, God, national identity, the stability of future generations —
for the sake of immediate and unchecked profit.

It is the kind of system, furthermore, that brings with it a huge,
nauseating sense of shame for how we have approached the world,
pouring a vague disgust over the nation like a cancerous sludge.
This is perhaps BushCo's cruelest gift of all: tragically convincing
us that this strain of capitalism, a furious weapon of greed and
disgrace, inviting all manner of corruption and destruction as it
brings out the absolute worst in the human animal, is the
only flavor there really is.

But then again, no. Maybe there's something else, a flipside we've
forgotten amid the insane oil profits and dead bodies and global
mistrust. It's the awkward truism that American capitalism is
potentially capable, despite its dark core of profit, despite its
frequently poisoned heart, of tremendous creative opportunity and
ingenuity. Like porn, like God, like wisdom and plutonium and
very, very dark rum, it's all in how you use it.

Here, then, is perhaps the most dominant question surrounding
the upcoming big transition, as the nation prepares over the next
year to finally rid itself of the cancer of Bush: Are we still capable
of reshaping the capitalist demon, injecting it, on a national scale,
with something like conscience and compassion and responsibility,
sans the need to sell your mother, rape Alaska, or bomb ancient
cities and kill pathetic foreign dictators in a pitiable attempt to
vindicate your dad? Is such a turnaround even possible anymore?

Because this nasty truth remains: Bush or no, Exxon and its nefarious,
insanely powerful ilk are ramming full speed ahead, undertaking more
incredibly brutal, land-raping techniques as you read these very words
to get at the Earth's remaining supply of oil, sucking up tar sand and
coal and anything else possible to maintain profit and power. They are,
and will continue to be, utterly relentless and, at least for a number
of years to come, quite unstoppable.

There is no eliminating the dark side of capitalism, the gluttony and the
greed and the violent underbelly. There is only minimizing, shifting the
emphasis, changing the pitch and angle of approach, trying to take
what is, at its very heart, a flawed and self-destructive system, and
making it into something proud and interesting and vibrant, something
actually worth defending.

Can it be done? Is it still possible? No matter how many poetic Barack
Obama speeches, no matter how many pragmatic Hillary Clinton
promises, it's a question that seems far bigger than both of them.
And the truth is, it's really the only question that matters.
