Hamas calls on Hezbollah to withdraw its forces from Lebanon

The Islamic Resistance Movement in Palestine - Hamas - has issued a statement today describing Hezbollah's military intervention in Syria as contributing to the worsening climate of sectarian polarisation in the region. Hamas called on Hezbollah to withdraw its forces and urged it to maintain the compass of resistance only in the direction of the Israeli occupation.
On another level, Hamas reaffirmed in its statement the inalienable right of the Syrian people to attain their rights and aspirations in freedom and dignity. The movement described the Syrians as a 'noble people', who have always been sincere in their resistance and in the forefront of struggle and defiance. They have always shown solidarity with Arab and Islamic causes, the statement added.
Today's statement was issued following a meeting of Hamas' leadership in Cairo. It noted that the Palestinian cause remains the central issue of the Arab and Islamic nation and that resistance against the Zionist occupation is the basic mission. Hence it is necessary to keep the compass of resistance in the right direction, whatever the conditions and circumstances.
Still further, Hamas emphasised the need to preserve the unity of the Muslims and to avoid all forms of sectarian and ethnic polarization.
It is noted that the statement from Hamas comes days after Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrullah, vowed to continue fighting in Syria alongside the forces loyal to the Assad regime. Hezbollahhad played a major role in the government's recapture of the strategic town of Qusayr.
Relations between Hamas and the Assad regime deteriorated after the escalation of the conflict in Syria. The movement's leaders have since left Syria where they had their headquarters.

  1. They have the gall to bite the hand that fed them the means to repel Israeli aggression.
