Between 27 December 2008 and 18 January 2009, a brutal conflict between Israel and Palestinian armed groups took place in Gaza and Israel.
Months later, the victims of this conflict are still being denied justice, truth and reparations due to the ongoing failure of the international community to effectively challenge impunity. Both Israel and Hamas have been allowed to fail in fulfilling the recommendations of the Goldstone report.
We need you to help us successfully challenge the attitudes and arguments that support the continuing impunity by lobbying for the UK Government to support an international justice solution such as a referral to the International Criminal Court.

Background

In September 2009, a United Nations Fact-Finding Mission issued a report (The Goldstone Report) setting out evidence that both sides committed war crimes and other serious violations of international law. The report noted that there were no credible efforts by either the Government of Israel or the Palestinian authorities to ensure that the crimes are investigated, that those responsible for the crimes are prosecuted or to provide reparations to the victims.

The report called on the United Nations to give both sides three months to address the issue. If they failed to do so, it recommended that the United Nations Security Council refer the situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC). It also recommended that other states exercise universal jurisdiction over the crimes.

On 5 November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the report's recommendations. Since then, however, little progress has been made and at a meeting in September 2010 the United Nations once again failed to insist on an international justice solution.

Global day of action - 18 January 2011

18 January 2011 marks the second anniversary of the end of the conflict in Gaza and southern Israel. Despite a United Nations Fact Finding Mission Report documenting war crimes and other serious human rights violations committed by both sides in the 22-day Gaza conflict, the victims have yet to receive justice or reparations.
The Global Day of Action marks the beginning of a two-month campaign demanding that the United Nations Human Rights Council take concrete measures to ensure international justice for the victims.
Please take part and mark 18 January 2011 by organising a public event, such as a vigil or talk. Here are some resources to help you promote and plan your event:
  • A template letter to the media (word)
This can be personalised and sent to your local newspaper to help publicise our campaigning and advertise your events. Ideally this should be sent within the first week of January
  • A suggested talk (word) that can be read in part or full at your event
  • More information (word) is included in this Action Circular
