An Israeli military official said the government will finalize the Wall’s construction by the end of this year, calling it 'Jerusalem's blanket'. Building permits will be ready within the next few months, he said.
According to the plan, Israel is yet to complete constructing 20 km of the Wall which will go through several areas surrounding the city, including Qalandia and Shoufat. This will be added to the ready 200 km, encircling the city, isolating it completely from the West Bank and forbidding any entry without permit to the Jerusalem and Israel.
Although the West Jerusalem municipality tried to assure Palestinian residents who will be isolated by the Wall, telling them they will not lose their Jerusalem IDs or their rights, legal and political observers say the Jerusalemites will lose all their rights and citizenships, thus becoming an ungoverned entity.
Residents of areas surrounding Jerusalem live in chaotic conditions, since the Israeli municipality will not provide Palestinians with basic municipal services and the Palestinian government is prohibited from providing any services, according to the Oslo agreement.
