Israeli war planes respond to Gaza Resistance
At least ten rockets were fired into Israel, three Gaza targets hit
Washington - The Israeli air force fired mortar shells at three targets in Gaza on Friday, in what it says is retaliation for rocket strikes from the territory.
Earlier on Friday, Israeli authorities reported that four rockets containing phosphorus had been fired from Gaza, hitting the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council. The armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committee claimed responsibility for the strikes, saying they were a response to Israel's killing of two al-Qaeda-linked Army of Islam Gaza militants.
According to Reuters, two of the Israeli shell attacks were aimed at targets near the town of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, one of which was an Islamic Jihad training camp. An Israeli spokesman also said that two of the three targets were smuggling tunnels.
In total, at least nine mortar shells and one long range rocket were fired into Israel the past 24 hours, the highest number in a concentrated period for several months.
According to Palestinian medical sources, at least four people have been injured.
"Four people with moderate injuries arrived at Shuhada al-Aqsa hospital after an air raid that targeted a home in Deir al-Balah," quotes Al Jazeera of a spokesman for Hamas-run medical services in Gaza, Adham Abu Selmiya.
Reuters also reports that the four are three women and a young boy, who were hurt after one of the attacks collapsed an uninhabited building near where they were standing.
