A selection of articles of interest

The first article below reminded me of a report by a British journalist who during the first Intifada was puzzled by Israel's closure of Palestinian schools since he thought had they been kept open meant less children on the streets throwing stones. He investigation revealed a sinister motive. Apparently, the supremacist Zionists were dismayed to learn that despite all the restrictions and hardships imposed on the Palestinians, their children were, on average, better educated than their Israeli counterparts! So, in order to ensure that this will no longer remain the case, the Zionists decided to use any excuse to close Palestinian schools.

I am afraid I do not remember the name of the reporter who wrote the article, but at the tine it was published by the Middle East Economic Digest.

"They don't want our boys educated"
Jody McIntyre writing from Beit Ommar, occupied West Bank

September 13, 2010 - Located just north of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, the entrance to the Palestinian village of Beit Ommar is also the site of an Israeli military post. A large yellow gate is opened and closed at the will of the Israeli army, which can cut off the inhabitants of the town from the rest of the West Bank at any time. Beit Ommar has been resisting since 1948, when the town's inhabitants fought the original settler population of Gush Etzion and today many continue to suffer the impact of the many surrounding settlements...

September 13, 2010 - The Thin Green Line:
It's Not Just the Settlements (or the Occupation), Stupid!

Nima Shirazi

September 13, 2010 - The public debate over the Israeli Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign was reignited recently with the news that the illegal West Bank colony of Ariel would soon be opening its newly-constructed, multi-million dollar cultural center and would host performances by several of Israel's leading theater companies in its auditorium, built - tragically - by the very Palestinian construction workers that Israel has occupied and dispossessed. The announcement marked the first time these notable Israeli drama groups would be performing outside of the 1949 Armistice Line in Israeli-occupied Palestine. Within days of the report, over 50 Israeli actors, directors, playwrights, and producers had signed onto a letter addressed to the boards of Israel's repertory theaters declaring their refusal to perform in Ariel, which is the fourth largest settlement in the West Bank...

East Jerusalem Palestinians Denied Basic Rights
by Stephen Lendman

September 13, 2010 - The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) is the country's leading human and civil rights organization through litigation, legal advocacy, education and public outreach. Its new report is titled, "Unsafe Space: The Israeli Authorities' Failure to Protect Human Rights amid Settlements in East Jerusalem," explaining how Judaization harms basic Palestinian freedoms. In fact, the Israeli military, police, and hostile settlers deny them, ACRI saying: Palestinians "complain of physical and verbal abuse (by police), settlers and their security guards; the intimidation of their children; various forms of harassment (including videotaping them in their homes); the barricading and closing off of streets and public areas; and more."..

Gaza subjected to air strikes, water crisis
Report, The Electronic Intifada

September 13, 2010 - Three Palestinian farmers were killed by Israeli tank shelling late at night 12 September in the northernmost occupied Gaza Strip, along the no-go "buffer zone" enforced by the Israeli military. Al-Jazeera reported that a 91-year-old farmer, Ibrahim Abdullah Abu Saeed, and 20-year-old Ismael Walid Abu Audeh were killed immediately. Abu Saeed's 17-year-old grandson, Hossam Khaled Abu Saeed, was critically injured and died shortly afterwards ("Israeli shelling kills Palestinians," 12 September 2010). Israeli officials claim the three men were armed fighters, preparing to fire a rocket into Israel. The "buffer zone" Israel has imposed on Gaza land along the boundary with Israel has taken 35 percent of the territory's open agricultural land, according to a recent report by the United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) ...

Peace Now: 13,000 settlement units pending
Ma'an news

September 13, 2010 - At least 13,000 housing units in illegal West Bank settlements are set for construction once Israel's building moratorium ends on 30 September, a report issued by an Israeli rights group read Monday. According to Peace Now, at least 2,066 housing units are ready for construction, having received building permits, while a further 11,000 are in the works that do not require further government approval. "There are apparently hundreds more housing units ready for construction as soon as the freeze ends but the ground works have not yet begun and there is not available information about them," the report read...

Unsafe Space: The Israeli Authorities' Failure to Protect Human Rights amid Settlements in East Jerusalem (Full Report)
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel

September 13, 2010 - Anyone who has toured East Jerusalem's Palestinian neighborhoods over the past few years, especially those neighborhoods closest to the Old City, cannot help but notice the increasing number of guarded compounds, surrounded by fences with armed sentries protecting them. These compounds, situated in the midst of densely populated Palestinian neighborhoods, house today some 2,000 Jewish residents and dozens of public institutions that serve their needs. Jewish settlement in these neighborhoods did not develop in a spontaneous manner, but is rather the intended outcome of a number of well-organized political NGOs whose common stated goal is to "Judaize" East Jerusalem...
