Chavez said he doesn't favor throwing shoes at anybody, but that the incident could be called
"the shoe toss of a people's dignity."
Earlier, Chavez had a more jovial response to the incident ? laughing and calling it "funny." Referring to the shoe-tosser, he said,
"What courage!"
"One must remember that Bush has not thrown shoes at the people of Iraq ? but bombs, death, destruction, " he said.

Where Is Muntadar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi Reporter Who Threw His Shoes at Bush?
Monthly Review,
....Muntadar' s brother, Uday al-Zeidi, was told by an officer guarding the Green Zone to "forget" about his brother in jail, and the Zeidi family had to leave their home for fear of arrest by the US and Iraqi forces, but the family are very proud of Muntadar, also according to Al Jazeera ... |
The world is awash with acts of solidarity with Muntadar al-Zeidi. کل‡ س‘اچه¦¬t;/font>) today that:
- There have been demonstrations in Basra, Najaf, and Baghdad in defense of Zeidi;
- About 200 lawyers from all over the world have expressed their readiness to defend Zeidi;
- The Iraqi Bar Association is forming a legal defense committee for Zeidi;
- The Union of Arab Journalists, together with the Union of Arab Lawyers, is demanding Zeidi's release and a fair trial;
- The Association of Muslim Scholars has hailed the courageous journalist, declaring that his heroic stance is an authentic expression of "Iraqis' anger and absolute rejection of the ugly American occupation";
- Reports and commentaries on Zeidi are all over the Arab media, and the Arab populace are busy emailing and texting praises for Zeidi (e.g. his shoes ought to be put on display in a museum as the most precious Arab artifact; and a statue of his shoes should be erected) and jokes about the United States government and its clients (e.g., "UGENT NEWS: Shoes Prohibited in Locations Visited by POTUS"; "US Arms Manufactures to Begin Making Anti-Shoe Weapons"; "The Palestinian Authority Prohibits Shoes at Press Conferences" ; and "Shortage of Shoes in Markets ahead of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's Visit to Ramallah").. .

[PHOTO] Los Angeles, Alta California - December 16, 2008 - (ACN) The brother of the Iraqi news reporter that threw his two shoes at US President George Bush yesterday said that his brother Muntazer al-Zaidi was beaten and tortured severely in a cell by security thugs assigned to protect the president. Muntazer al-Zaidi, a journalist for Iraqi television channel Al-Baghdadia, threw one of his shoes and then his other at President Bush at a press conference in Baghdad while yelling "here is a kiss from Iraq you dog!" (See video below)
The shoes narrowly missed hitting Bush in the noggin but one did hit the US flag as the president ducked. Throwing or hitting an enemy with a shoe or shoes is considered a great insult in Iraq.
News reporter Muntazer al-Zaidi was soon accosted by security agents and dragged out of the room. Durgham al-Zaidi, Muntazer's brother, said that he was then taken to a cell and tortured and beaten by Bush's agents. Durgham al-Zaidi said that his brother is now suffering from a broken arm, broken ribs and deep open wounds on his face.
Muntazer al-Zaidi is today a huge hero through out the Arab world. Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets demanding the immediate release of the popular journalist. The President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez who is known as "Chavez of Arabia" said last night that Muntazer al-Zaidi was "very courageous" and the Lebanese television channel NTV offered a well paid position to the journalist. In addition, Muntazer al-Zaidi was given a bravery award by a national Libyan charity group chaired by Aicha Gaddafi, the daughter of leader Muammar Gaddafi.
[CARTOON] The Egyptian independent daily Al-Badeel carried a frontpage cartoon of the US flag with Bush depicted as the sole of a shoe and Mohammad Ali Ibrahim of the government owned newspaper Al-Gomhuria wrote,"Pelting the American president with shoes was the best way for expressing what Iraqis and Arabs feel toward Bush."
Iraq, now governed by a US "puppet regime", has suffered immensely under President Bush and his cronies . The US war against Iraq launched in order to steal the nation's oil has killed over 600,000 civilians. In addition, numerous Iraqi women and young girls were raped by US soldiers. Among the worst atrocities carried out by the Bush Administration were the many cruel and heinous incidents of torture that occurred inside the notorious and demonic Abu Ghraib Prison (See articles below).

Al-Iraq News, Iraq - Translated By Jenny Oliver
The Iraq News Network has saluted the manly and courageous stand taken by that dutiful and genuine son of the Iraqi people, journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi. Al-Zaidi transformed the head of U.S. President George W. Bush into a playground for a pair of shoes. Al-Zaidi's actions sent Bush reeling from right to left - despite attempts by the leader of the al-Sistani government, Nouri al-Malaki, to defend his master with his right hand. The call for solidarity, issued on behalf of the editor-in-chief of the Iraq News Network, Mr. Diaa' al-Kawwaz, and his entire staff, said that this precious Iraqi had cleansed the hearts of Iraqis with cool water and healed their chests of a pain that percolated within like the melting of iron in a boiling cauldron... |
