Internet giant Yahoo! and the Apple computer firm have reportedly included East Jerusalem on a weather software application for iPhones, Israeli media reported.
According to the far-right Israeli news site Artuz Sheva, the previous program reportedly unified both sides of the city, despite the eastern part falling under territory occupied by Israel in 1967.
Now, users can chose between East Jerusalem or West Jerusalem when requesting weather updates. The news site reported that on the Yahoo! weather page, which is linked to The Weather Channel, one is offered two Middle East options when requesting weather information for Jerusalem – Jerusalem, Yerushalayim (IL), Jerusalem, and Palestinian Occupied Territories > West Bank, Jerusalem (PS).
While Israel maintains that the part of Jerusalem occupied in 1967 falls within Israel's boundaries, the international community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the area which includes the Old City, Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah, the Mount of Olives, Shu'fat, Beit Hanina, Anata, and others which Palestinians hope to make the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, expressed his disappointment with the fact that “Jerusalem, which has been united for 43 years, has been divided by the computer giant and the popular search engine,” Arutz Sheva reported.
Oren sent a letter of protest to both Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz and Apple CEO Steve Jobbs, adding that he and the rest of the Israel Embassy staff use the iPhone, the news site reported.
