U.S. Jewish activist: Why I am protesting the Friends of the IDF dinner
Why am I protesting the $1,000-a-plate Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) dinner honoring Chief of the IDF Staff Gabi Ashkenazi at the Waldorf on March 9? Like many American Jews, I grew up hearing that the IDF was the most moral army in the world. An honest look at the historical and current evidence, however - most recently documented in the report of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on the Israeli Invasion of Gaza (the Goldstone Report)- reveals a very different reality.

Veolia involved in more dirty business as BDS campaign grows
The French multinational company Veolia has been a key target since the beginning of the BDS movement. This has been largely due to Veolia and Alstom’s involvement in the tramline that will link the ring of settlements around to Jerusalem to the western part of the city. This ongoing project has been the center of a legal trial in France. However, Veolia is also involved with bus routes that are reserved for settlers only, in addition to operating the Tovlan landfill, which is located in the Jordan Valley in the West Bank.

Jonathan Cook, "Israel in OECD: Israel Set to Join Club of Richest Nations"
An exclusive club of the world's most developed countries is poised to admit Israel as a member even though, a confidential internal document indicates, doing so will amount to endorsing Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian and Syrian territories. Israel has been told that its accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is all but assured when the 30 member states meet in May. . . . Israel's bid for OECD membership has been opposed by the leaders of its Arab minority, one-fifth of the population. Last month the Higher Follow-Up Committee, the minority's main political body, petitioned the OECD to reject Israel. It has pointed out that half of Israel's Arab citizens are living below the poverty line, a rate three times higher than among Israeli Jews, and that on average Arab citizens earn salaries that are one-third less than Jews. Mohammed Zeidan, head of the committee, blamed the disparities in wealth on what he called Israel's "racist and discriminatory polices." Another OECD report, published in January, showed that, even on the basis of Israel's figures excluding the Palestinians, Israel would still have the widest social gaps of any member state if it were accepted.

Jews of good will need to understand that they no longer get to decide for Palestinians
Last night’s huge demonstration against the Israeli government’s program of Judaizing East Jerusalem, which took place at Sheikh Jarrah, looks to me like it could become one of those historic symbols that mark a fundamental turning point. It’s not the first such moment for Israel/Palestine, by any means, but it’s big and striking and (I hope) will take its place in the history of the struggle. For other contexts, think Stonewall. Think Rosa Parks. Think Selma. Think Little Rock. Think the great march on Washington.

The film (the third consecutive Oscar nomination for Israel) has been applauded for its realistic view of life in an Arab slum neighborhood in Jaffa and also for the oft-mentioned multicultural feel-good component; the film was co-directed by two young filmmakers, Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti — one Jewish and one Palestinian-Israeli.

Novelist Henning Mankell says Israel faces ‘final insurrection’ and ‘fall’, Philip Weiss
I am continually impressed, as so many contributors to this site are, by how advanced the world conversation on Israel/Palestine is, and how far behind the American conversation is. The explanation is, per Shlomo Sand in his amazing book, The Invention of the Jewish People, that Israel replaced aliyah with diaspora– it gave up the idea of bringing Jews to Israel and instead based its future on the Jews in the U.S. But where was I going? The Swedish writer Henning Mankell, whose mysteries are in my house, went to the Palestine Festival of Literature and got an eyeful of the occupationand apartheid, from Hebron to Jerusalem. He wrote a piece for Aftonbladet, translated here.

Israel is a refugee camp? Yes, Oz. A refugee camp with a massive arsenal of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. A refugee camp that has invaded at least five countries. A refugee camp that occupies countries and commits war crimes. A refugee camp that has a per capital income similar to that of the UK. A refugee camp that in my life time has bombed Tunisia, Sudan, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. A refugee camp that sends it dumb Mossad killers to assassinate around the world. A refugee camp that receives billions in foreign aid from the US. Any person who makes this statement is not only a racist but has the sensitivity and humanity of a holocaust denier. Sacco's 'Footnotes in Gaza' is 'comic book like no other'
US, March 8, 2010 (Pal Telegraph, by Tim McGirk) - Joe Sacco's Footnotes in Gaza is a comic book like no other. It has no super-heroes, and not many laughs, but few would expect much levity in a story set in a territory under constant siege and bombardment by the Israelis. But Gaza's present plight simply forms the backdrop against which the book's main character, the cartoonist himself, wanders through 388 finely crafted pages, dodging Israeli missiles and sniper fire as he tries to re-construct events surrounding two massacres of Palestinians in Gaza by Israeli soldiers in 1956.

“IAF Bases in North Could Be Targets in Future War”
08/03/2010 An internal study conducted by the Israel Air Force reveals that IAF facilities in northern and central Occupied Palestine could for the first time come under fire from very accurate long-range missiles. The Israeli air force has already begun to prepare personnel serving on its bases, who are used to relatively secure conditions at their installations near the home front, for this possibility. Intelligence officials said that Hezbollah and the Syrians are procuring tens of thousands of missiles and rockets, some with a range that could allow them to strike central Occupied Palestine, and that they are now much more precise. It is believed that if war breaks out in the north, the Syrian army and Hezbollah, and perhaps Hamas and Iran as well, will try to hit settlers centers in the Zionist entity as well as certain military targets - such as deployment areas and especially air force bases.
