Funerals and demonstrations against West Bank assassinations

ImagePNN - Jenin / Ali Samoudi – The demonstrations began last night after the assassinations of Tariq Jumaa Abu Ghali and Iyad Khanfar.

Israeli forces targeted the northern West Bank’s leader of Saraya Al Quds, the armed resistance wing of Islamic Jihad, and a 24 year old An Najah University student affiliated with Hamas, Iyad Khanfar, in Nablus’ Makhfyeh neighborhood early on Tuesday.

The bodies were taken from Nablus’ Rafidiya Hospital in massive funeral processions, which then continued in the home towns of the men.

Further north in the West Bank’s Jenin, the body of Abu Ghali was carried from that city’s Government Hospital where his funeral began. The procession was massive with his body wrapped in the cloth of Saraya Al Quds.

The march roamed the city streets amid cries of anger and chants, which condemned the Israeli crime and called for continued resistance. Funeral-goers refused the “calm” with the Israelis as there is no end to the assassinations and incursions.

Participants headed to the home of Abu Ghali after prayers in the mosque and then they carried the body to the cemetery for burial.

His eulogy waxed for his sacrifices and condemned the “crime of assassination which confirms that Israel is not interested in peace or calm.”

It was also asserted that the armed resistance will not give up now, not under these circumstances, and not while still living under occupation.

There was also a call for national unity, a reunification of the parties and factions that are still in the midst of an internal conflict.

In a smaller village the body of the university student Iyad Khanfar was carried alongside Palestinian flags, photos of the 24 year old while still alive, and members of the Al Qassam Brigades, the armed resistance wing affiliated with Hamas. They carried banners and called for strengthening national unity and to “assemble the ranks in the face of continual Israeli aggression.”

During his eulogy, which included several speeches, it was underscored that the people refuse to accept the assassinations and killings of Palestinians, and that they refuse the occupation. An appeal was issued to the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people.

Regarding the history of Abu Ghali, this was considered a “great victory” for Israeli forces who have been attempting to kill him for two years. He was one of the most important leaders of the armed resistance wing of Islamic Jihad. Over the past two years Israeli forces have attempted to assassinate him, arrest him, they launched dozens of raids on his family home, destroyed its contents, and arrested his father and his brothers.
Islamic Jihad said that the “calm” in Gaza does not mean that the Palestinian armed resistance should sit and wait for “slaughter and killings one after the other.” A response was promised.

Jihad called on all armed resistance groups who have agreed to the “calming” to take a clear and unified approach to the Israeli aggression in Nablus. An Islamic Jihad leader in Gaza, Shihab, said, “I will not sit still as the occupation seeks to eliminate the resistance, particularly the sons of Islamic Jihad and Saraya Al Quds.”

He called on the Hamas-linked armed resistance in the West Bank to confront Israeli aggression as they killed one of its university students. Jihad is calling for the people to rise up once again and fight back after condemning “the heinous Israeli crime in the city of Nablus.”
