ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK 2008
February 3-9, 2008
In NYC and around the world....
2008 marks the 60th anniversary of al-Nakba, the displacement of over 800,000 Palestinian refugees from their homes, villages and towns. It also marks the fourth year of Israeli Apartheid Week and the second year of IAW in New York City! Last year, activists from across the New York metropolitan area came together for a landmark week of educational and cultural events to draw attention to Israel's apartheid regime, and to highlight the growing movement in Palestine and around the world calling for boycott, sanctions, and divestment from Israel.
The Israeli Apartheid Week Coalition is planning an even bigger week of events this year, and we are calling upon you to be a part of this week of action!
Major panels will take place on Monday, February 4 and Friday, February 8; a major cultural event will take place on Saturday, February 9. Throughout the week, however, events and activities hosted by individual groups will take place all over New York City, New Jersey and throughout the metropolitan area - on campuses, in communities, organized by many groups.
Please join us in hosting events and activities for Israeli Apartheid Week! The deadline for printing posters is coming soon, so please inform us quickly of your activities and events, and get involved with IAW organizing here in NY! To contact us, please email israeliapartheidweek@yahoo.com.
If you would like to get involved and are outside the NY metro area, please contact us! IAW is an international activity, with events and activities in cities across the U.S., Canada and Europe. If you are interested in bringing IAW to your city, please email us at israeliapartheidweek@yahoo.com.
The aim of Israeli Apartheid Week is to push forward the analysis of Israel as an apartheid state and to bolster support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign in accordance with the demands outlined in the July 2005 Statement: full equality for Arab citizens of Israel, an end to the occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza, and the implementation of the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees pursuant to UN resolution 194. The analysis of apartheid put forward during Israeli Apartheid Week in previous years has played an important role in raising awareness and disseminating information about Zionism, the Palestinian liberation struggle, and its similarities with the indigenous sovereignty struggle in North America and the South African anti-Apartheid movement.
As Israel and its global backers in Canada, the US and Europe tighten the economic stranglehold on the Palestinian people and while the Israeli military continues its daily assault on Palestinian life, our collective responsibility in isolating the Israeli apartheid regime is becoming ever more crucial.
The organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week in New York City are a coalition of student and community groups who have come together to promote critical, strategic discussion on this issue, while also strengthening the ties between various student and community groups. The organizers include: NYU Students for Justice in Palestine; Falasteen and the Arab Students Association at Columbia University; Action Wednesdays Against the War; Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East; Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition - NY; New Jersey Solidarity - Activists for the Liberation of Palestine; the Palestine Education Project, WESPAC Foundation, and Arab Students United NYU.
