Bethlehem – Ma'an – Former Israeli defence minister Amir Peretz on Monday called for dialogue with Hamas and for checking the possibility of releasing Fatah strongman Marwan Barghouthi from Israeli custody.
The Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Peretz as saying that he recently met with Barghouthi twice in his prison cell at Hadareim prison and got the impression that Barghouthi is a man of peace.
In meetings behind the scenes, Peretz talked about the necessity of releasing Barghouthi as he believed that would strengthen the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and "the moderate" Palestinian officials. He also suggested that Barghouthi, as a strong Fatah leader, could create balance with Hamas which, according to Peretz should be negotiated with over a mutual ceasefire and prisoner exchange.
Ministers from the Israeli Labor party and two other major parties were enraged by Peretz' declarations, claiming that they he is trying to show his distinction from the current Israeli defence minister, Ehud Barak.
