JUST IN!! - Studs Terkel's latest book and Beyond
the Green Zone, by Dahr Jamail. But first...
Expose the Farce
Academy in Annapolis, Maryland next week. Although he made sure members of the Israeli apartheid regime would be part of this meeting
it fits the purpose of this gathering that absent will be some important Palestinian leaders and Palestinian elected officials and any other Palestinians opposed to the U.S.-Israeli occupation of Palestine.
This is a gathering to promote war against Iran and divide the
pro-Palestinian movement in the Middle East to justify the continued occupation of Afghanistan while supporting the latest Israeli genocide against Palestinian people in Gaza while the building of Israeli
settlements, walls and checkpoints in the West Bank continue daily.
Now is the time for all progressive people to renew their commitment to justice in the Middle East. There are nationally coordinated local demonstrations on November 27th protesting Bush's "peace meeting"
and demanding an immediate end to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
(To find out more about this and read the Call by the Troops Out Now Coalition click here. But make sure you come back!)
Now is also the time to refresh and re-introduce ourselves to the rich literature about the struggles of the Palestinian people. In addition to
the books and dvds on this subject, you can also find the beautiful 2008 Colors from Palestine Calendar.
And remember that, as usual at leftbooks,

2008 Wall Calendar:
Colors From Palestine
Revolution is an intrinsic part that can not be separate from bread, water, working palms,
and the beating of the heart. —Ghassan Kanafani, Palestinian writer and revolutionary.
This year's Colors from Palestine calendar features the art of Naji Al-Ali. A Palestinian
artist, assassinated in 1987. Naji Al-Ali is known for the sharp political criticism in his work
and perhaps best known as the creator of the character Handala, who has since become an
icon of Palestinian defiance.
Each month shows a unique Al-Ali drawing, accompanied by quotes from internationally-recognized revolutionaries and other political figures.
The calendar is a project of Resistance Art, a Palestinian initiative to celebrate the
diversity and richness of Palestinian art and culture.

The U.S. Role in Israel and Palestine
By Naseer H. Aruri
In this fully revised and updated version of his highly acclaimed book, The Obstruction
of Peace: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians, Naseer H. Aruri dismantles
the many myths about the failed Middle East "peace process."
Aruri analyzes the evolving relationship between the United States and the two
protagonists--the Palestinians and Israel-- and argues that the U.S. government, rather
than serving as an "honest broker," has allowed Israel to use violence and violate
international law to maintain its occupation.
As a result of the U.S.' massive military, economic, and political support for Israel,
Palestinians continue to be denied their fundamental right to self-determination and justice.

The Scar of David
A novel by Susan Abulhawa
2007 Winner of the Fiction & Literature, Historic Fiction category in the
National Best Book Awards.
Excerpts from review by Judy Greenspan:
How do you clear the debris of misconception and prejudice from people's minds
about one of the most misunderstood struggles in history? More importantly, how do
you propel people toward a real understanding of the Palestinian people's right to
their homeland? Susan Abulhawa accomplishes these tasks (and more) with her
first novel, The Scar of David.
The Scar of David stands out as more than an impassioned history of the Palestinian
people's struggle for their homeland. It is an intricate tapestry, a living quilt of five
generations of Palestinian families, their lives and deaths, their pain and suffering and
most importantly their love for their homeland—Palestine.
The reader experiences firsthand the "catastrophe" of Nabka, the heinous forced removal
of the Palestinian people from their homes and the establishment of the state of Israel
and brings us to the Israeli siege of the city of Jenin.
The Scar of David is a must read for everyone wishing to learn the truth about the
Palestinian struggle. As a teacher, I would highly recommend its inclusion in middle
school, high school and college classes. As an American Jew, I believe this book should
be read by Jewish people everywhere who wish to tackle decades of misconceptions and understand and embrace the Palestinians' right to return to their homeland. (Read the full

Beyond the Green Zone is a collection of Dahr Jamail's reports on such subjects as
the U.S. disinformation about the capture of Saddam Hussein, the battles of Fallujah,
and the U.S. campaign to bring 'freedom and democracy' to Iraq. His observations of
the gratuitous cruelty of U.S. soldiers toward innocent Iraqis are particularly devastating. —Excerpts from Chalmers Johnson's review..
"While the powerful media conglomerates embedded on the ground with the invading and occupying forces, Jamail embedded with the suffering people of Iraq and uncovered the
horrors of this war of 'liberation.' Dahr Jamail is the conscience of American war reporting,
the quintessential unembedded reporter." —Jeremy Scahill, New York Times best-selling
author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army
Haymarket, hardcover, notes, index, 302pp
