Over the past week, activity in the Palestinian theatre has been difficult
to characterize, except perhaps for the absence of any remarkable
developments in movements towards peace, and for the 'sameness' of much that
has come to pass.
Briefly:
- Israel's President raised another quickly sidelined peace proposal
- More eminent international bodies (the Italian President, the UK's House
of Commons) suggested the ongoing boycott of Hamas and corresponding
blockade of Gaza are counter-productive to peace and welfare, to more
protests from Israel.
- The UN warned again of impending economic collapse in the Gaza Strip
- The Israeli Defence Forces continued their occupation and other
activities, with correspondingly more deaths, injuries, arrests, and
disruptions in the lives and livelihoods of Palestinians.
On a more positive note:
- Israel, Egypt and the Hamas administration in Gaza succeeded in
coordinating the return to Gaza via Israel of all 6000 Gazans trapped in
Egypt since June. Only those unprepared to travel through Israel remain in
Egypt
- 120 Palestinian businesspeople are preparing to launch an 'alternative'
political party to contest the next elections for the Palestinian Authority'
s Presidency and Legislature, in response to widespread disillusionment with
Fatah and Hamas.
