Hamdan: Abbas and his advisors provide political cover for the blockade

Beirut - Hamas' representative in Lebanon Osama Hamdan has reiterated his outright accusation to PA chief Mahmoud Abbas and his advisors of attempting to foil talks on the formation of a national unity government, and of providing the needed cover for the unjust economic embargo imposed on the PA government.

The blockade was and still is imposed on the Palestinian people by the USA and its international, regional, and local allies ever since Hamas formed the new PA government after overwhelmingly winning the legislative elections last January.

In a press conference he held Wednesday, Hamdan charged that Abbas and his associates were attempting to turn around the Palestinian people's political will "with all available means".

He indicated that one of Abbas' retinue has requested the American administration to exert all pressures possible on Abbas in order not to partake in a PA national unity government as aspired for by the majority of the Palestinian populace.

Upon returning from a visit to Washington two weeks ago, Abbas had dramatically changed his stand on the coalition government and reneged on understandings he had with PA premier Ismail Haneyya, and arbitrarily froze all talks in this regard.

Hamdan further back lashed at Fatah MP Nabil Shaath and deputy head of the PA intelligence apparatus Tawfik Al-Tairawi for stating that the alternative of the coalition government is an imminent civil war.

"They (Shaath and Tairawi) are sending a bad message namely either to accept the Israeli conditions or the entire Palestinian national venture will be destroyed", said Hamdan while commenting on those statements.

He expressed surprise at Abbas' insistence to link talks of any future PA unity government to American and Israeli approval, questioning, "Is the aspired unity government an American or an Israeli one to link talks over it to American and Israeli blessing?"

Moreover, Hamdan pointed out that his Movement welcomed the Qatari initiative although it was aware that a group of those against the formation of a national unity government solicited the American help to block that Qatari mediation.

"The only way to get out of this fabricated crisis is the formation of the national unity government based on the agreed-upon national harmony document, to give the PA interior minister the full authority to discipline the security mess in the PA-run lands, and to abide by the harmony document", Hamdan underscored. He also noted that Hamas' doors are open for Abbas anytime.

Commenting on Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul Ghait's statements criticizing Hamas for rejecting the 2002 Saudi-sponsored Arab initiative, Hamdan said, "The Arab regimes that declared the initiative had abandoned it through their approval of the US-sponsored roadmap plan that shouldnt in any way be used to besiege Hamas".
