Documentary on Vanunu Exposes Who Controls the Media in America

  … by  Bob Johnson

A British Broadcasting Corporation has a news documentary on Mordechai Vanunu, the man who exposed the reality of Israel’s nuclear weapons programs and the stockpile of nuclear bombs it churns out.
And it has brought to light a very critically important fact which sheds much needed light on who controls the American media.
Israel’s Secret Weapon  is a fact filled well documented film which makes it crystal clear Israel has not only nuclear weapons of mass destruction, but also deadly chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction as well.
It does a great job of showing Israel’s fear of Mordechai Vanunu who blew the whistle on Israel’s secret nuclear weapons production.
After being kidnapped by Israeli terrorist agents Vanunu was imprisoned for over 18 years and is now still under house arrest.

Vanunu - A man we all owe a lot to
One of the many benefits of this documentary, in addition to bringing attention to the plight of Mr. Vanunu and the real threat the Jewish state is to world peace, is that it brings to light the fact that the media in the United States is not a free media.
The media in America censors and shapes the “news” in ways that are most beneficial to Israel. Everything Americans see on the news is seen through Jewish lenses.
At 40:09 in the documentary the BBC correspondent asks Americans who are demonstrating in Minnesota against the war in Iraq if they know who Mordechai Vanunu is.
Nobody knows who he is. She then asks them what they would say if she told them he was somebody who exposed Israel’s nuclear weapons of mass destruction which nobody knew about before he told the world.
The first person to answer said, “Why is our media, that is supposed to be free and open, not telling us?” Why, indeed.
The signs the protestors were holding all referenced war for oil. Not one of them said, “No war for Israel” which would have been much more accurate. The reason no one had such a sign about Israel being the cause of the Iraq war is because of the point the BBC correspondent made – America’s media is almost exclusively kosher.
Information gathered goes through a Zionist filter prior to being released for general consumption. If the media masters think the facts could be damaging for Israel, then those facts are suppressed.
Vanunu brought us the truth
Case in point is Mr. Vanunu and Israel’s stockpile of nuclear and thermonuclear bombs along with their stockpile of biological and chemical weapons.
This should be front-page news along with demands that Israel either open up or be opened up for inspections of its WMD. Instead, hardly a word is mentioned about them and absolutely no words are spoken or printed calling for such inspections.
This shows great power, focus and design of the media manipulators. Especially since all other nations in the Middle East are under scrutiny regarding WMD.
With Nobel Prize winner Gunter Grass writing and publishing his heroic and fact filled poem, What Must Be Said, about Israel’s deadly WMD stockpile and its submarines which carry these deadly nuclear weapons all around the globe, we now KNOW that Israel can strike anywhere and anyone in the world with a nuclear attack.
The fact that the media does not cover this very real threat in-depth is solid evidence of who the “journalists” and editors are working for.
A fascinating article about just how Jewish the media is was written by Joel Stein. In his article he lists some of the most influential media figures in America which reveals a very, very kosher (I use “kosher” as a strongly negative word because kosher is a very negative and costly reality) media.
Mr. Stein’s article even brings out the fact that the chief executive of CBS, Leslie Moonves, is “so Jewish his great uncle was the first prime minister of Israel,” Ben-Gurion. (Moonves’ name may be derived from Ben-Gurion’s wife’s maiden name, Munweis.
As the kosher media and Israel and its political whores in Washington continue to move us to yet another unnecessary war for Israel’s benefit, this time with Iran, we need to educate everyone we possibly can for the real reason for the war. This will at least allow the sincere protestors to have more accurate signs which will read, “NO WAR FOR ISRAEL!”

Declassified: Massive Israeli manipulation of US media exposed

Files declassified in America have revealed covert public relations and lobbying activities of Israel in the U.S. The National Archive made the documents public following a Senate investigation. They suggest Israel has been trying to shape media coverage of issues it regards as important. You can download the files from the web-site of the Institute for Research on Middle Eastern policy. And we can cross to Washington now and talk to Grant F. Smith who is a director at that Institute.

WHY DO MOST AMERICANS KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE ISSUES

Exclusive: by Dr Alan Sabrosky (Ph.D, University of Michigan), a ten-year US Marine Corps veteran and a 1986 graduate of the US Army War College VIA Intifada Palestine.
This is not intended for those who follow these issues, but as a primer  for a general public (especially Americans) who do not follow them, and in fact are not even aware that they are issues!  Hoping that others may also find useful material in it.   Far too often, issues involving Israel and its actions are addressed in a sophisticated and complex manner, often with little or no linkage among them. This is fine for professionals who are well versed in the subject matter, and can infer detail and linkages where none is explicitly given or made.

Send thanks To Jon Stewart

Send thanks to Jon Stewart for disecting

and ridiculing the Zionist's anti-Palestinian propaganda

On The Daily Show's January 5 "Strip Maul" segment, Jon Stewart did what few American television personalities have dared to do: he criticized Israel's campaign against Gaza, making it clear that bombing will not bring peace for Israelis or Palestinians. He mocked the one-sided response of U.S. politicians by calling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the "Mobius strip of issues because there's only one side!" He's sure to get thousands of complaints, so send Jon a letter of appreciation and then ask all your friends to watch this segment.

Please consider sending an email message of thanks to Jon for having the courage to bring to his audience's attention the fact that from the corporate media whores and most political commentators they have been fed a steady stream of one sided, pro-Israel spin and propaganda which does nothing to present a realistic view to the public of what is happening in Gaza today.

The Difficulty of Being an Informed American

"The function of the “mainstream media” is to sell products and to brainwash the audience for the government and interest groups. By subscribing to it, Americans support their own brainwashing."

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

The American print and TV media have never been very good. These days they are horrible. If people intend to be informed, they must turn to foreign news broadcasts, to Internet sites, to foreign newspapers available on the Internet, or to alternative newspapers that are springing up in various cities. A person who sits in front of Murdoch’s Fox “News” or CNN or who reads the New York Times is simply being brainwashed with propaganda. Before conservatives nod their heads in agreement, I’m not referring to “the liberal media.” I mean the propaganda that issues from the US government and the Israel Lobby.

It was neoconservative Bush regime propaganda fed to America through Judith Miller and the New York Times and through Murdoch’s Fox “News” that convinced Americans that they were in danger from a small secular Arab country half way around the globe called Iraq. It was the American media that convinced Americans that getting rid of dangerous “weapons of mass destruction,” weapons that did not exist in Iraq, would be a cakewalk paid for by Iraqi oil revenues.

It is the same propagandistic American print and TV media that have rationalized Bush’s illegal invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan based on seven years of lies and deception.

It is the same media that today provids only Israeli propaganda as “coverage” of the Israeli war crimes in Gaza.
It was the New York Times that spiked for one year the leaked information from the National Security Agency that the Bush regime, in violation of US law, was illegally spying on Americans without warrants. The “liberal” New York Times agreed to suppress the story so that Bush would not face reelection under the cloud of his outlaw behavior.

Conservatives think the Washington Post is “liberal media” despite the fact that the editorial and commentary pages are controlled by neocons and their sympathizers.

During the run up to wars and during wars, the American press has always been a propagandist for the government. The only exceptions occurred during the later phases of the Vietnam war and the Contra-Sandinista conflict in Central America. Karen de Young and some others tried to honestly cover the Contras and Sandinistas and were demonized by “patriots” taken in by the government’s lies.

Conservatives still blame the “liberal” media for losing the Vietnam war, when in fact all the media did was to provide some truthful reports that opened some American eyes.
When the truth cuts against the position of the US government, conservatives see it as “liberal.”

When propaganda supports the government’s lies, conservatives see it as “patriotic.”

However, any resemblance to independent reporting disappeared from the American media when the Democratic regime of President Clinton allowed Murdoch and a small handful of moguls to concentrate the American media in a few corporate hands. That was the end of American reporting.
Journalists disappeared from media management and were replaced by corporate advertising executives with an eye not to offend any source of advertising revenue, and certainly not to offend the government, which controls the broadcast licenses that comprise the value of the mega-companies.

Today reporters write the stories that their masters want to hear, or they are out. The function of editors is to make certain that no uncomfortable information reaches the public.
The public is slowly catching on, and the print media is dying. The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Los Angeles Times are all on the ropes.

Americans are still subjected to Fox “News” and CNN propaganda piped into airport waiting rooms, doctors’ offices, and exercise centers

People ask me where they can get reliable information. I tell them that their goal cannot be reached without their commitment of time.

People who have access to television services that provide English language foreign broadcasts, such as Iran’s Press TV, Russia Today, or Al Jazeera, can get get news and insights from those parts of the world demonized by the US media.
The BBC World Service still reports facts while covering itself by providing the views of the US, UK, and Israeli governments.

Both the Asia Times and Israeli newspapers, such as Haaretz can be read online in English. There are other such newspapers, and all of them provide information that Americans will never see in their own media. Any American newspaper that was as truthful about the Israeli government as Haaretz would be closed down.

The only US print source with which I am familiar in which some honest reporting can be found on a regular basis is the McClatchy papers.

Americans addicted to print media must turn to alternative newspapers, which tend to be weekly or bi-weekly. However, the news and commentary provided are often superb..

Alternative newspapers are often the children of people motivated by a sense of justice and the love of truth. Such people have become an endangered species in the American “mainstream media.” The free press Americans have today is online and in the alternative media.

The function of the “mainstream media” is to sell products and to brainwash the audience for the government and interest groups. By subscribing to it, Americans support their own brainwashing.

Dont fall for Israeli propaganda

ONCE again Israel seeks to defend the indefensible in an attempt to cloak its crimes against humanity with the mantle of self-defense. As its American-manufactured bombs and missiles pound a virtually unarmed starving population, Israeli officials appear on just about every satellite news network singing from the same propagandist song sheet.

It’s all the fault of the terror organization Hamas which refused to renew the cease-fire, “ ‘We have a duty to protect our citizens in the south from rockets and mortars”. I’ve heard several saying “When we pulled out of Gaza we hoped Palestinians would forge a functioning territory but instead they chose terror”. In answer to questions concerning so many civilian deaths, they all insist that Israel is carrying out surgical strikes against “terror infrastructure” or they will excuse Israel’s bombardment of homes with “civilians are hiding launchers in their houses”.
Israel’s former ambassador to the United Nations Dan Gillerman seemed nonplussed when one interviewer asked him whether the seven dead UNWRA student employees were launching missiles too.

Predictably, these merchants of untruths are given free rein to spin on most Western networks and disproportionate airtime as opposed to pro-Palestinian commentators.
Let’s dissect these fabricated Israeli arguments.

First, whatever one thinks of Hamas and it ideology, it was elected to office in free and internationally-monitored elections that were forced upon the Palestinian people by Washington as part of the Bush administration’s quest to democratize the Middle East.

Then, after congratulating the Palestinians on their new democracy, the US-led international community promptly condemned the new leadership as terrorist and threw its support behind Fatah, which was “ordered” to turn against Hamas. This divisive strategy worked to the extent Hamas was driven to Gaza where it has since struggled against all odds to provide its citizens with the barest minimum required to sustain life.

Those representatives of Israel who say since their country’s pullout there was no obstacle to Gaza becoming a flourishing enclave are disingenuous when Gaza’s borders are sealed and the people have no control over their coastline or airspace.

Even when the Fatah-controlled Palestinian National Authority managed Gaza, Israel did everything it could to destroy infrastructure including a $75 million airport built with donations from the EU, Japan and Morocco. And during this recent round of attacks, ministries, government buildings, police stations and a police academy were bombed which does not support Israel’s supposed wish to see a functioning Gaza.

While it is true that Hamas refused to extend the cease-fire, what incentive does it have to do so while Israel is waging a war of attrition on the people in its care? It seems residents of Gaza must choose to die slowly from starvation and lack of medicines or at the hands of the Israeli war machine. Secondly, Israel is, indeed, duty-bound to protect its citizens but just look at the numbers. Very few crude home-made rockets have resulted in casualties. I believe only one Israeli has died during this current onslaught that has robbed the lives of over 320 Palestinians and wounded up to 1,000; not including those still buried beneath rubble. Once more, Israel’s response has been disproportionate just as it was in 2006 when it slaughtered 1,200 Lebanese civilians in answer to Hezbollah’s kidnapping of IDF soldiers.

Third, when it comes to Gaza, said to be one of the most densely-populated areas of the world, there is no such thing as a surgical strike. Moreover, over half of Gaza’s population are children under 18. Even the smartest smart bombs could not cherry-pick between resistance fighters and innocents in such a packed environment. The Israeli government knows this and doesn’t care a jot, which translates to willful collective punishment, illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
But like its Washington master (or is it the other way around?) Israel is not constrained by international law or the Geneva Conventions that also require an occupying nation to provide for the well being of people under its occupation and to respect their dignity. As the willful killing continues, Israel merrily ignores pleas from France, Russia, the UN, the EU and Britain to end the violence. Why should it do otherwise when it has proved time and time again that it is a law unto itself and immune from international punishment?

Unsurprisingly, the only message from the US to Israel is “try to avoid civilian casualties”, which is nothing more than lip service to international humanitarian sensitivities. In effect, the Bush administration has blessed this, by many accounts, long planned operation, cynically timed to begin during a political vacuum in Washington and close to upcoming elections when candidates need to prove they’re tough to win votes. Tragically, there may be much worse to come. Israeli government officials including Defense Minister Ehud Barak has warned the offensive could be widened as tanks line up on the border with Gaza and 6,500 IDF reservists are on standby.

Tomorrow, the Arab League is holding an emergency summit of foreign ministers to discuss the crisis. If only they will decide to do more than issue a joint statement of condemnation this time. Together they have so much clout. Now is the time for all Arab countries to gather together as one nation to say “enough is enough” before the streets of Gaza run with the blood of their desperate brothers and sisters. As the West closes its eyes and ears to Palestinian cries for help Arab leaders should heed the outraged voices on their own streets and act. Finally, the governments of Egypt and Jordan should do some soul-searching. Should they continue with peace agreements made in all good faith with a selfish, cruel state bent on destroying a people for its own ends?

A Letter to the US Media

Dear Editor

Imagine if more than 63 thousand Americans were massacred in a couple of hour’s campaign of F-16 bombing. This number represents (the percentage) the number of Palestinians killed by Israel when it launched its massive air strikes in Gaza on Saturday. A friend of mine in Gaza tells me that hundreds are still buried under the rubble and the toll of deaths could easily reach thousands .Already there’s more than 1700 injured with many in serious conditions.
Imagine if all this carnage is being paid for by your tax money.
Israel is carrying out an all out massacre in the Gaza Strip and the Arab American Community is outraged because neither the US Media is covering and reporting the facts nor the Bush Administration and Congress have the back bone to order Israel ,which gets almost 11 Billion Dollars a year from the US, to stop carrying these war crimes.

The US Administration and the US media keep repeating the Israeli lies that it is doing this mass killing, in retaliation to Hamas breaking the cease fire and launching rockets on settlers just outside of the Gaza Strip. Neither have the decency to think for a minute and investigate these lies.
Israel says that it left the Gaza Strip almost 2 years ago and that a cease fire agreement between it and Hamas took place and that Hamas violated it. What it does not say that since then it has been enforcing a very tight siege, were medicine, gas, food, electricity or even clean air is not allowed in .It does not tell you that since then it killed more than 67 people in Gaza and that more than 385 sick people died for the lack of medication and electricity that is needed to power life saving equipment, a very clear violation of the cease fire agreement it had with Hamas.
For almost 2 years Hamas did not retaliate. It actually put in jail members of resistance groups that could not take all these violations laying down.
All of this is well documented and easy to get information, but obviously not to the US Media and the US administration, who are doing a disservice to all of us. The whole world is aware of the US complicity in carrying out these war crimes .It’s another shameful act that this Bush Administration is adding to its over-filled Dossier.

No crime should take place in our name and with our money .Bush, instead of trying to bring the Car Industry to it’s knees so he can give them loans to survive and sustain US jobs, should stop all US aid to the rogue state of Israel, and the US Congress should regain it’s independence and stop being an Israeli occupied Territory.

Westerners Killed to Suppress Palestinian Perspective?

In the beginning of this millennium, the growing numbers
of young Westerners who went to the occupied Palestinian
territories to live for a while with the civilian population
were helping the world opinion turn more and more against
Israel's occupation of the Palestinian people. The often
moving first hand accounts of these autonomous, self-
governed freelance reporters and human rights activists
appeared in local papers all over the US and Europe and
swamped the internet, often providing a rare insight into
the life of the occupied civilian population.

When reading these accounts, it made a difference to many
Americans and Europeans that it was one of "their own"
who had experienced the brutality of Israeli occupation
close up and then reported on it. It made the stories credible
in the eyes of many, and paved the way for them to identify
with the Palestinian suffering and understand the
Palestinian perspective for the first time. More and
more ordinary people in the West were aware of the
inhumane nature of the Israeli occupation.

However, the bloody spring of 2003 changed all that.
When Israeli soldiers in five tragic weeks killed
Rachel Corrie and James Miller and critically injured
Brian Avery and Tom Hurndall, presenting the
Palestinian perspective to the world suffered a
hard blow. Telling the alternative story to the official
Israeli one became difficult as the Israeli army
introduced more restrictions to the movements
of internationals across the green line between Israel
and Palestine and, as fewer internationals have had
the courage to travel inside Palestine

Today, five years later, our knowledge of what goes
on inside the West Bank and Gaza and of the devastating
impact to ordinary Palestinians of the Israeli military's
actions is still suffering due to the atrocities of spring,
2003.

Corrie, Avery, Hurndall and James, who all operated
without the permission or consent of the State of Israel,
lived with Palestinian families for a sustained period of time.
Miller and Hurndall were both freelance reporters and
photographers working on stories that would shed a
negative light on the Israeli army's treatment of civilian
Palestinians in Gaza. In addition to freelancing, Hurndall
also volunteered in the same organization as Corrie and
Avery, the International Solidarity Movement, which is
a Palestinian organization attracting internationals to
the West Bank and Gaza to live with civilian Palestinians
and work as human right observers, humanitarian aid
workers and nonviolent activists.
The British reporter Jonathan Cook, who works out
of the Israeli city of Nazareth, wrote in 2006:
"It was a very effective deterrent to other activists --
as well as freelance journalists who might be mistaken
for activists ... in consequence there was a rapid loss of
the Internet diaries of life under occupation and eyewitness
accounts that were creating a fledgling but useful
"alternative journalism" ... Israel has [thereby] ensured
that independent witnesses are now largely absent from
the occupied territories."
A few months after the shooting of Tom Hurndall,
ISM closed down its office in Gaza. Even though the presence
of international witnesses in Gaza was as needed as ever,
it was deemed too great a risk. Furthermore, the increasing
difficulties international civilians experienced getting into
Gaza was discouraging most from even making the attempt.
"... instead "professional" reporters, based in Israel, venture
into these areas only to report after the event... ensuring
that a far narrower range of voices are being heard,"

continued Jonathan Cook.
I, Lasse J. Schmidt, the author of this article, lived in
Jenin on the West Bank for 15 months between February
2003 and August 2005. The first three months, I
volunteered for ISM (and witnessed the shooting of
Brian Avery), the last year I taught English at the
American University. One thing I often discussed with
my ISM colleagues (mostly from Sweden) was how to
get international journalists to drive the short trip from
their offices in Tel Aviv to Jenin. It was a trip of just an
hour or so by car, but also a trip from one reality to another,
from first-world luxury and comfort to poverty, destruction
and military oppression.
During my 15 months living and working in the Jenin area,
I know of only once when foreign reporters came to the city.
That was on the day of the one-year memorial for the Israeli
invasion of the Jenin refugee camp in April 2002. 50-70
Palestinians died over ten days of fighting and 3500
became homeless as Israeli bulldozers demolished an
entire neighborhood in the center of the camp.
The memorials were supposed to last for a whole week, but
the Israeli army declared a week-long curfew on the
morning of the second day and the remaining events
were canceled. But on that first day where ten thousand
or so people marched in the streets of Jenin, international
reporters invaded the city. Sadly, they had gone home
to Israel by nightfall.
On May 11 2003, only nine days after the shooting of
British filmmaker James Miller, the Israeli army introduced
a waiver to be signed by all internationals seeking access to
Gaza. By signing it, reporters, aid workers and even UN
personnel write off any right to hold the Israeli army responsible
if shot or injured, no matter the circumstances. Until the
disengagement of Gaza, the waiver also stated that they were
forbidden to enter the "closed military zones" along the
Egyptian border in Rafah. This is the place where Rachel
Corrie, Tom Hurndall and James Miller were killed and
where Israeli military bulldozers systematically had been
violating the rights of civilian Palestinians for years by
demolishing their homes. In addition, visitors to Gaza had
to declare that they have no association with the
International Solidarity Movement.
Today, to get into Gaza as a reporter, you need a special
press card issued by the Israeli government. All other press
cards are of no use without being backed up by the official
Israeli card. To get this card, you have to be accredited with
a news organization recognized by the Israeli government.
Despite being officially disengaged from Gaza, it is still the
Israeli army
who solely decides who gets access to the strip
and who does not. Gaza is completely closed off from the
outside world by a tall electric fence or concrete wall on
three sides except for a few border crossings, and all -
fence, wall and crossings - is controlled by Israeli soldiers.
Even the border to Egypt is de facto controlled by the Israeli
army
. On the fourth side is the Mediterranean Sea, which is
controlled by the Israeli navy. No Palestinian boats - not
even small fishing boats - are allowed to go more than
three miles of the shoreline.
"These conditions severely limit the freedom of freelance
reporters and photographers to find stories that the main
media organisations have overlooked ... The effect of the
waiver is to impose a large financial burden on freelance
journalists ... either they protect themselves ... at a huge
personal cost ... or they risk injury for which no one can
be held accountable and made to pay. Even if it can be
proven that an Israeli soldier took a malicious shot of the
kind that in the past killed filmmaker James Miller and
UN official Iain Hook and destroyed most of face of activist
Brian Avery, freelance journalists and their families will
not be entitled to a penny of compensation,"
wrote
Jonathan Cook.
It will not be long before the situation concerning the West
Bank
is similar to the one for Gaza. At the moment, Israel
has built approximately a 500 km Separation Wall around
the West Bank. When the last 300 km of wall are built,
which at the current pace of construction will take 3-4 year,
that area will be just as effectively sealed of as Gaza is today.
Then, who gets in and out of the West Bank, and who gets to
report on the news there, will be entirely up to the Israeli
army
.
Left to tell the stories differing from the official Israeli
perspective are the Palestinians, and who would be better
at it, one could interject. They, of course, know better than
anyone the price paid by civilians in Gaza and the West Bank
due to the Israeli military actions. While that is true, it is
also a fact that Palestinians are not considered as credible
witnesses by the outside world as are their own people.
Who would you believe the most? Jacob, a Jewish American
who grew up in your neighborhood, or Ahmad, who speaks
a heavily accented English, is Muslim and grew up in
Gaza City?
There are hundreds of highly regarded Palestinian
photographers and reporters working in Jenin, Nablus,
Ramallah
, Bethlehem, Hebron, Gaza City and Rafah. Many
work for respected news organizations such as Reuters,
Associated Press (AP) and Agence France-Presse (AFP).
But their stories and photographs are rarely presented in
the western media in general and in the US Media in
particular.
"Israeli public relations strategies ... exercise a powerful
influence over how news from the region is reported ...
the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains
hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the
occupied territories appears to be a defensive move rather
than an offensive one ... U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging
from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have
become complicit in carrying out Israel's PR campaign,"

writes the official summary for the , a documentary film by
Bathsheba Ratzkoff, an Israeli citizen and Jew now living
in the U.S.
As the five-year anniversaries of the deaths of Rachel
Corrie, Tom Hurndall and James Miller and the near-
death of Brian Avery are coming this spring, ask yourself
why these four internationals ended up being victims of
Israeli soldiers. No ISM activist has been severely injured
or killed before or after the bloody spring of 2003. Was it
in fact a calculated attempt to deter the growing independent
and alternative voices reporting to the outside world on the
Palestinian perspective?

US Soldiers Kill Unarmed Iraqis and Afghanis

By Robert Parry

By forcing repeat combat assignments to Iraq and Afghanistan -
and by winking at torture and indiscriminate killings - George W. Bush
is degrading the reputation of the U.S. military, turning enlisted soldiers
and intelligence officers into murderers and sadists.

For instance, on Feb. 10 at Camp Liberty in Iraq, Army Ranger Sgt.
Evan Vela was sentenced by a U.S. military court to 10 years in
prison for executing an unarmed Iraqi detainee who - along with
his son - had stumbled into a U.S. sniper position last year.

After letting the 17-year-old son go, Vela's squad leader,
Staff Sgt. Michael Hensley ordered Vela to use a
9-millimeter pistol to shoot the father, Genei Nesir
Khudair al-Janabi, in the head, an order that
Vela carried out. "It was murder, plain and simple,"
military prosecutor, Major Charles Kuhfahl, told the court.

Janabi's son, Mustafa, was allowed to make a statement,
explaining how his father's death had devastated the family and
how one of his four younger brothers now avoids their home because
he can't stand the sight of his father's empty room.

"Please don't forget about us," Mustafa told the court.

But Vela's guilty verdict was a rare case of holding a U.S.
soldier accountable in the killing or abusing of an Iraqi. Among the
infrequent cases that have been brought, most end in acquittals or
convictions only on minor charges.

Last November, for example, another military jury acquitted Hensley
in the same murder of Janabi as well as in the killing of two other Iraqi
men south of Baghdad in the early days of Bush's troop "surge." That
jury ruled that Hensley was following the approved "rules of engagement,"
though it did convict him of planting an AK-47 on one victim.

Some of Vela's military comrades complained that it was unfair
to single any of them out for punishment because these killings
are so common in Iraq.

Vela's former platoon commander, Sgt. First Class Steven Kipling,
said that if all U.S. combat soldiers in Iraq were subjected to the same
scrutiny applied to Vela, "we would have thousands" of cases.
[NYT, Feb. 11, 2008]

Indeed, the evidence does suggest that the handful of homicide
cases from Iraq and Afghanistan that reach military trial represent only
a small fraction of the unprovoked killings of locals at the
hands of U.S. soldiers.

Press Attention

The murder and abuse cases that do result in trials often stem
from incidents that get news media attention, like the mass killing
of two dozen Iraqis in Haditha on Nov. 19, 2005, which
Time magazine exposed.

Even more memorable was the case of the sexual and physical
abuse of Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison, mistreatment that
was documented with photographs that reached the U.S.
news media in 2004.

President Bush, who then was seeking reelection, joined in
denouncing the low-ranking soldiers who had dressed Iraqi men up
in women's underwear or made them pose naked on leashes or in
fake sexual positions.

Bush said he "shared a deep disgust that those prisoners were
treated the way they were treated." Other senior administration officials
called the Abu Ghraib guards - mostly poorly trained reservists -
a "few bad apples."

Amid the furor, some Abu Ghraib guards claimed they were simply
following guidance from intelligence interrogators on techniques to
"soften up" detainees. But the Bush administration stuck to its story
that the guards were an out-of-control night shift.

Army Sgt. Sam Provance was the only uniformed military intelligence
officer at Abu Ghraib to support the guards' claim that the prisoner
abuse was part of the "alternative interrogation techniques" that had
made their way from Guantanamo to Abu Ghraib.

Provance, however, was punished for his candor and pushed out of
the U.S. military. The Bush administration went ahead with plans to
pin the blame on the MPs. [See Consortiumnews.com's "
The Ghosts of Abu Ghraib."]

Only after Election 2004 did evidence surface revealing that the
sexual abuse of the Abu Ghraib prisoners did fit with the broader
policy - approved by President Bush and other senior administration
officials - to break down prisoners for interrogation.

For instance, alleged 9/11 plotter Mohammed al-Qahtani, who was
sent to Guantanamo in 2002, was subjected to treatment similar to
what later occurred at Abu Ghraib. Qahtani was forced to wear a bra,
had a thong placed on his head, was paraded naked in front of women
and was led around on a leash like a dog, military investigators
reported in 2005.

Nevertheless, at Abu Ghraib, only the guards got
serious punishment. Eventually, 11 enlisted soldiers were
convicted in courts martial.

Cpl. Charles Graner Jr. received the harshest sentence - 10 years
in prison - while Lynndie England, a 22-year-old single mother who
was photographed holding an Iraqi on a leash and pointing at a
detainee's penis, was sentenced to three years in prison. Their
superior officers either were cleared of wrongdoing or received
mild reprimands.

Bush continued to treat the Abu Ghraib scandal like a freak
incident that the media had blown out of proportion. At a press
conference on May 25, 2006, he complained, "We've been paying
for that for a long period of time."

Into the Gutter

Never has Bush acknowledged that the abusive treatment of
detainees - or the killing of unarmed Iraqis and Afghanis - are a
natural result of his aggressive war strategies, nor that he is the
one primarily responsible for dragging the worldwide reputation of
the U.S. military and intelligence services into the gutter.

In the "war on terror," Bush has asserted unlimited presidential
authority that he claims lets him kill, imprison, spy on and torture
anyone anywhere in the world, U.S. citizens and foreigners alike.
[See Consortiumnews.com's "Bush 'Apex' of Unlimited Power"
or the book, Neck Deep.]

A former senior administration official told the Washington
Post in 2004 that Bush "felt very keenly that his primary responsibility
was to do everything within his power to keep the country safe, and
he was not concerned with appearances or politics or hiding behind
lower-level officials." [Washington Post, June 9, 2004]

Bush, however, has hid behind lower-level people, especially
the soldiers on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom
have faced multiple assignments to the war zones with relatively
brief periods of home leave.

As one member of Sgt. Vela's sniper team, Sgt. Anthony
Murphy, said: "It's a terrible war out there. And you have to make
tough decisions. This war doesn't provide that luxury to be perfect."

In an e-mail interview with the New York Times, Sgt. Hensley,
who gave Vela the order to execute the Iraqi detainee Janabi,
complained that he [Hensley] should not have even faced a court
martial because he was following guidance from two superior
officers who wanted him to boost the unit's kill count.

"Every last man we killed was a confirmed terrorist," Hensley
wrote. "We were praised when bad guys died. We were upbraided
when bad guys did not die." [NYT, Nov. 9, 2007]

In another incident near the town of Iskandariya, Iraq, on April 27,
2007, Army sniper Jorge G. Sandoval Jr. received an order from Sgt.
Hensley to kill a man cutting grass with a rusty scythe because he
was suspected of being an insurgent posing as a farmer.

Like Hensley, Sandoval was acquitted because the military jury
accepted defense arguments that the killing was within the rules of
engagement. (Sandoval was convicted of a lesser charge of planting
a coil of copper wire on a slain Iraqi, and was sentenced to five
months in prison.)

The Sandoval case also revealed a classified program in which
the Pentagon's Asymmetric Warfare Group encouraged U.S. military
snipers in Iraq to drop "bait" - such as electrical cords and ammunition
- and then shoot Iraqis who pick up the items.
[Washington Post, Sept. 24, 2007]

Afghani Shot

A similar case of authorized murder of an insurgent suspect
surfaced at a military court hearing at Fort Bragg, North Carolina,
in mid-September 2007. Two U.S. Special Forces soldiers took
part in the execution of an Afghani who was a suspected leader
of an insurgent group.

Special Forces Capt. Dave Staffel and Sgt. Troy Anderson
were leading a team of Afghan soldiers when an informant
told them where the suspected insurgent leader was hiding.
The U.S.-led contingent found a man believed to be Nawab Buntangyar
walking outside his compound near the village of Hasan Kheyl.

While the Americans kept their distance out of fear the suspect
might be wearing a suicide vest, the man was questioned about his
name and the Americans checked his description against a list
from the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force
Afghanistan, known as "the kill-or-capture list."

Concluding that the man was Nawab Buntangyar, Staffel gave
the order to shoot, and Anderson - from a distance of about 100
yards away - fired a bullet through the man's head,
killing him instantly.

The soldiers viewed the killing as "a textbook example of a
classified mission completed in accordance with the American
rules of engagement," the International Herald Tribune reported.
"The men said such rules allowed them to kill Buntangyar, whom
the American military had designated a terrorist cell leader, once
they positively identified him."

Staffel's civilian lawyer Mark Waple said the Army's Criminal
Investigation Command concluded in April that the shooting was
"justifiable homicide," but a two-star general in Afghanistan
instigated a murder charge against the two men. That case,
however, foundered over accusations that the charge was
improperly filed. [IHT, Sept. 17, 2007]

According to evidence at the Fort Bragg proceedings, the
earlier Army investigation had cleared the two soldiers because
they had been operating under rules of engagement that empowered
them to kill individuals who have been designated "enemy
combatants," even if the targets were unarmed and presented
no visible threat.

In late September 2007, a U.S. military judge dismissed all
charges against the two soldiers, ruling it was conceivable that the
detained Afghani was wearing a suicide explosive belt, though
there was no evidence that he was.

Loose Rules

The U.S. counterinsurgency and security operations in Iraq
and Afghanistan also have been augmented by heavily armed
mercenaries, such as the Blackwater "security contractors" who
operate outside the law and were accused by Iraqi authorities of
killing 17 Iraqi civilians in a shooting incident on Sept. 16, 2007.

Though most media criticism has focused on trigger-happy
Blackwater "security contractors," Bush's military strategy has
employed its own indiscriminate firepower - from the loose rules
of engagement for U.S. troops, to helicopter gun ships firing on
crowds, to jet air strikes, to missiles launched from Predator drones.

For instance, the U.S. military acknowledged on Oct. 23, 2007,
that an American helicopter killed 11 people, including women and
children, after someone allegedly shot at the helicopter as it flew over
the village of Mukaisheefa, north of Baghdad.

Iraqi police and witnesses said 16 people died, apparently as
some rushed to help a wounded man, the New York Times reported.
The helicopter gunners presumed the wounded man to be an
insurgent and thus opened fire on the locals who came to his aid,
according to witnesses.

"The locals went to check if he was dead and gathered
around him," said Mohanad Hamid Muhsin, a 14-year-old who was
shot in the leg. "But the helicopter opened fire again and killed some
of the locals and wounded others." When Iraqis carried the wounded
into houses to administer first aid, the helicopter fired on the houses,
killing and wounding more people, said Muhsin, who added that the
dead included two of his brothers and a sister. A local police official
said the 16 dead included six women and three children,
while 14 other Iraqis were wounded.

The incident followed on the heels of an Oct. 21 gun battle in
which 49 people died when U.S. forces attacked alleged Shiite
militiamen in Sadr City, a crowded slum in eastern Baghdad.
Local authorities said the dead included innocent bystanders.
[NYT, Oct. 24, 2007]

Another account of the Oct. 23 incident in the Los Angeles
Times quoted residents saying the men who were killed were farmers
irrigating their fields in the pre-daylight hours.

Abdul Wahab Ahmed, a neighbor, said the U.S. attack also
involved jets that conducted two bombing runs. The dead included
two toddlers and four teenagers, he said.
[Los Angeles Times, Oct. 24, 2007]

The U.S. military said one of those killed in the Oct. 23 attack
was "a known member of an I.E.D. cell,"
referring to improvised explosive
devices that Iraqi insurgents have made their weapon of
choice in fighting the U.S. occupation.

The American statement added that four other "military-age males"
were killed along with five women and one child. U.S. military spokesmen
often justify killings in Iraq and Afghanistan by noting that the
dead are military-age males (or MAMs), slain in the vicinity of a firefight.

Vietnam Echo

The shoot-to-kill strategy toward MAMs has a resonance back to
the Vietnam War when U.S. helicopter-borne troops sometimes
would spot a MAM working in a rice paddy, fire a shot near him
and then interpret his running as an aggressive act justifying his killing.

This technique was described approvingly by retired Gen.
Colin Powell in his widely praised autobiography,
My American Journey.

"I recall a phrase we used in the field, MAM, for military-age male,"
Powell wrote. "If a helo spotted a peasant in black pajamas who
looked remotely suspicious, a possible MAM, the pilot would circle
and fire in front of him. If he moved, his movement was judged
evidence of hostile intent, and the next burst was not in front,
but at him.

"Brutal? Maybe so. But an able battalion commander with whom
I had served at Gelnhausen [West Germany], Lt. Col. Walter
Pritchard, was killed by enemy sniper fire while observing
MAMs from a helicopter. And Pritchard was only one of many.
The kill-or-be-killed nature of combat tends to dull fine
perceptions of right and wrong."

While it's true that combat is brutal and judgments can be clouded
by fear, the mowing down of unarmed civilians in cold blood doesn't
constitute combat. Under the laws of war, it is regarded as
murder and, indeed, a war crime.

Neither can the combat death of a fellow soldier be cited as
an excuse to murder civilians. [For more on Powell's justification
for war crimes, see Chapter 8 in Neck Deep.]

In effect, Bush's "global war on terror" has reestablished what
looks like the Vietnam-era Operation Phoenix, a program that
assassinated Vietcong cadre, including suspected communist
political allies.

By early 2005, as the Iraqi insurgency grew, the Bush
administration reportedly debated a "Salvador option" for Iraq, an
apparent reference to the "death squad" operations that
decimated the ranks of perceived leftists who were opposed to El
Salvador's right-wing military junta in the early 1980s.

According to Newsweek magazine, President Bush was
contemplating the adoption of that brutal "still-secret strategy" of
the Reagan administration as a way to get a handle on
the spiraling violence in Iraq.

"Many U.S. conservatives consider the policy [in El Salvador]
to have been a success - despite the deaths of innocent civilians,"
Newsweek wrote.

The magazine also noted that many of Bush's advisers were leading
figures in the Central American operations of the 1980s, including
Elliott Abrams, who is now an architect of Middle East policy on
the National Security Council.

Wanton Death

In Guatemala, about 200,000 people perished, including
what a truth commission later termed a genocide against
Mayan Indians in the Guatemalan highlands. In El Salvador,
about 70,000 died including massacres of whole villages,
such as the slaughter committed by a U.S.-trained battalion
against hundreds of men, women and children near the town
of El Mozote in 1981.

The Reagan administration's "Salvador option" also had a
domestic component, the so-called "perception management"
operation that employed sophisticated propaganda to manipulate
the fears of the American people while hiding the ugly reality
of the wars. [See Robert Parry's Lost History.]

Bush has taken the position that he can override both
international law and the U.S. Constitution in deciding who gets
basic human rights and who doesn't. He sees himself as the final
judge of whether people he deems "bad guys" should live or die, or
face indefinite imprisonment and even torture.

The troubling picture is that the U.S. chain of command,
presumably up to Bush, has authorized loose "rules of engagement"
that allow targeted killings - as well as other objectionable
tactics including arbitrary arrests, "enhanced interrogations,"
kidnappings in third countries with "extraordinary renditions" to
countries that torture, secret CIA prisons, and
detentions without trial.

This anything-goes approach has been conveyed down to
soldiers in the field who believe they have wide discretion
to kill Iraqis and Afghanis on the slightest suspicion. With
rare exceptions - like the conviction of Sgt. Vela - the U.S.
military has become a law onto itself, an extension of
President Bush's megalomania.
