MEMO- A member of the Hamas political bureau, Mahmoud Zahar, said in a statement on Saturday that any international initiative for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip "must be commensurate with the sacrifices of the Palestinian people, and the Palestinian resistance groups' outstanding capabilities", the Anadolu news agency has reported.
The twelve hours humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian factions ended at 20:00 local time. Both parties agreed to a UN request to halt fighting for twelve hours to allow delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Strip. According to Haaretz newspaper, political sources said that the Israeli government decided to extend the humanitarian ceasefire for another 24 hours ending at midnight on Sunday.
The Israeli army has been waging a war against the Gaza Strip which has killed 1,047 Palestinians and injured nearly 5,900 more, Palestinian medical sources revealed. Most of the victims are civilians.
Israel's intensive and brutal raids against the people of Gaza have destroyed almost 2,000 homes and damaged 22,600 others. The Ministry of Public Works said that 1,680 housing units are now totally uninhabitable.
Sources in Israel also claim that 42 soldiers and three civilians have been killed and 463 wounded, most of whom are also civilians. The armed wing of Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades, claims that 80 Israeli soldiers have been killed in action. One soldier has been captured by the resistance group.
