Israeli Chief of Staff: "We will continue to pound Gaza despite truce mediation"

Israeli Army Chief of Staff, Benni Gantz, stated Wednesday that the Israeli army will continue its offensive against the Gaza Strip "as if mediation efforts are not ongoing", and added that the army is following an agenda that will be implemented despite of what happens on the political spectrum.

Gantz held a session with senior Israeli military and security officials to evaluate the current operations against Gaza, and said that the army is bombarding "high value" targets, including Hamas's institutions such as banks, security centers and weapons storage warehouses, in addition to bombarding infrastructure such, as roads and bridges.

He also said that the army fired missiles at fuel pipes that provide Gaza with fuel by running from the Egyptian side into Gaza through the siege-busting tunnels across the border.

The Israeli military official added that the army bombarded government facilities and ministries in the coastal region in an attempt to topple Hamas, and weaken its power in the coastal region.

He also said that Gaza "woke up today to find a new situation, with more difficult living conditions, as the ruling Hamas party will need several years to reconstruct its infrastructure and recover from the Israeli strikes.

Gantz said that, overnight and on Wednesday at dawn, the army bombarded more than twenty tunnels, and attacked at least three armed groups that intended to fire shells into Israel.

As for the situation in the West Bank, Gantz stated that the current situation is very fragile, adding that Israel expects further confrontations in the West Bank should the offensive against Gaza continued.

Israeli shells killed on Wednesday 12 Palestinians while dozens have been injured; some seriously.

The Israeli offensive against Gaza continued for the eights day bringing the number of Palestinians, mainly civilians, children, infants and women, to at least 156, while more than 1100, also mainly civilians, have been injured.
