Today in History: A UNILATERAL CEASE-FIRE JULY 17

July 17, 1948:  With the UN Security Council's whip in his hand, Count Folke Bernadotte, later to be assassinated by the Zionists, was now fully equipped to crack on the Arabs in his capacity as UN Mediator.

The Count reached for his pen and with cool nerves scribbled a few lines fixing July 17, 1948 for beginning of a Security-Council imposed cease-fire on all Palestinians fronts.

Those lines were enough to finalize the act that paralyzed the Arab States when they got the Count's message requesting their compliance with the cease-fire order.

Obviously Israel's compliance was not requested, not seriously at least;  for without losing time, its forces, both regular  and irregular, soon moved in all directions, occupying the towns of LYDDA and RAMLEH besides scores of Arab villages and firmly tightening their grip on the city of Jerusalem, whose occupation was completed during the June 1967 aggression.
