Anti-Defamation League (ADL) National Director Abraham Foxman has the same moral authority to comment on bigotry, anti-Semitism and justice as does the crazy corner of American politics, the American religious right.
Foxman tells Haaretz in a wide-ranging interview that many Americans hold anti-Jewish sentiments. What Foxman did not say is that the anti-Semites belong to the religious right with whom Foxman makes common cause.
The American religious right; this collection of Christian bigots includes Lou Sheldon (Traditional Values Coalition), Gary Bauer (Chairman, Forgotten American Coalition), Don Wildmon (American Family Association), Pat Robertson (the 700 Club), Beverly LaHaye (Concerned Women for America), and Paul Weyrich (Free Congress Foundation) are America’s bat-crazy lobby, well-heard within the Republican Party.
These major American religious right figures signed an anti-Iraqi withdrawal statement and were previously identified by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as extremists assaulting tolerance and pluralism in America. Now, all is well with the religious right and the ADL, which has formed a sick alliance.
The above forces of hate and Christian dominionism have much in common.
Back in 1994 when the ADL arguably on occasion took liberty and civil rights seriously, the ADL published a well-received report on the religious right, The Religious Right: An Assault on Tolerance and Pluralism in America.
Among the religious whacks featured as dangerous bigots are the very same Lou Sheldon (Traditional Values Coalition), Gary Bauer (Chairman, Forgotten American Coalition), Don Wildmon (American Family Association), Pat Robertson (the 700 Club), Beverly LaHaye (Concerned Women for America), and Paul Weyrich (Free Congress Foundation), described in the ADL’s The Religious Right as enemies of tolerance and pluralism.
Nut jobs like Robertson and Wildmon are Christian Zionists with the ADL stamp of approval, hot for more war, allies of the ADL, notwithstanding these very same fundies believe Jews are destined to spend eternity in hell fire.
Anti-Semitic and Christians-for-a-militaristic-Israel groups are welcome in the ADL as long as they bang the drums for war, and support the occupation.
Consider the Forgotten American Coalition, composed of groups that form the core of the religious right in America, and the base of the contemporary Republican political coalition.
These very same groups, all of whom lean to the extreme right and espouse authoritarian, militarist ideologies, preach war in defense of ’Islamo-fascism’s war on America and Western Civilization.’
So, the ADL and formerly regarded agents of intolerance and enemies of pluralism have found common ground: Hatred for Islam and love of more war.
For anyone interested, Foxman has an interview in Haaretz last week.
ADL chief Foxman: 30% of Americans think U.S. Jews more loyal to Israel
Foxman tells Haaretz in a wide-ranging interview that many Americans hold anti-Jewish sentiments. What Foxman did not say is that the anti-Semites belong to the religious right with whom Foxman makes common cause.
Bradley Burston in Haaretz quotes the usual lies from Foxman who brands John J. Mearsheimer’s and Stephen M. Walt as anti-Semitic.
Mearsheimer and Walt are first-rate scholars, and men of peace and international law.
Defending peace and international law; this is why Foxman defames them; as he befriends the imbecilic Bauer, Wildmon, Robertson and LaHaye.
