More about Fall of the Moon: An Homage to Mahmoud Darwish:
The Lebanese composer, oud master and singer Marcel Khalifé and the Al Mayadine Ensemble perform the poems of one of the Arab World's most revered poets, the late Palestinian Mahmoud Darwish.

The internationally acclaimed Marcel Khalifé is known globally for his mastery of the oud and his innovative compositions. He is a recipient of many awards, including the UNESCO Artist for Peace Award (2005), for his musical talents and his championing of arts and culture in the Middle East. He is joined on tour by the Al Mayadine Ensemble, an 8 piece ensemble comprised of vocalists and musicians playing Middle Eastern and Western instruments.

Mahmoud Darwish was one of the most powerful voices of the Arab World. His poetry touched upon personal topics including family, exile, marginalization and identity with universal appeal. His works have been translated into more than 25 languages, and became of source of inspiration for Khalifé when he first discovered Darwish's words in the 1970s.

Khalifé closed the gap between poem and song by putting Darwish's poetry to music, elevating the prophetic message of the prose. Darwish often referred to Khalifé as his "heart's artistic twin." Though they came from different countries, both artists shared a sense of desperation and hope about the state of their respective homelands. Together these icons of Arab art and culture gave voice to the voiceless.

Fall of the Moon: An Homage to Mahmoud Darwish revisits and re-imagines the ties that bind these two powerful advocates of Arab culture. Soulful vocals accompanied by the sounds of classical Middle Eastern and Western instruments are featured in contemporary arrangements spanning from intimate duets to rich ensemble pieces.

This concert will take place on Sunday, October 7th and is the closing night event of the fifth annual TPFF. To find out more about TPFF, please visit www.tpff.ca
