Dear Friends, It is past time when Palestinians in the diaspora should have the ability to vote in elections in Palestine. In September the UN is being called upon to recognize a Palestinian state. Under what borders? '67. By this action, many feel that the PA and the PLO are giving away '48 and that they do not have the right to do so. And what of Right of Return? Dr. Hanan Ashrawi stated in Mississauga that '48 would still be the historical birthplace of Palestinians but to have a state, one must have borders and thus the 1967 borders. This would also be a means to prevent Zionists from stealing further land from Palestine. But where is the opportunity for Palestinians in the diaspora to thoroughly debate this move and to debate it with the decision makers? It is past time that diaspora Palestinians had a vote in the Palestinian National Authority. I call upon Palestinian Canadians to organize now to be able to vote in the next election of the Palestinian National Authority. When the PNA elections in Palestine are held, Canadian Palestinians should have the ability to go to the Palestinian delegation offices in Ottawa to vote or an alternate non-partsian venue. Yes, this is a big endeavour but it can be done and other countries currently do it. An organization similar to Elections Canada needs to be built to make sure the election process is fair and non-partisian. A mechanism must be developed to identify who has the right to vote. And this must be done in a manner that is completely transparent and non-partisan. What do you think? Susan |
