Billions of Reasons to Resist

“What would you do if someone came to your door with a cup in hand asking for a contribution to help buy guns and kill a group of people they didn't like?”

Billions of Reasons to Resist

Between January and April the government holds out its hand to U.S. taxpayers and expects payment in full. Wally Nelson (see quote above) is one of thousands of individuals who stopped to think about what the government was doing with his money and decided he could not in good conscience cooperate. Wally figured that out more than 50 years ago and spent his life refusing to support war.

Today more than 50% of Americans say they do not know what the war in Afghanistan is all about, and yet U.S. tax dollars (now and for years to come) are paying for that war at the cost of about $7 billion a month. On August 31, 2010, the Obama administration declared that combat operations in Iraq had ended and yet 50,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq — another $6 billion a month.

At the same time, the U.S. military is scattered around the globe on more than 1,000 bases costing at least $102 billion a year. Back at home, unemployment and poverty are at the highest level in decades, hunger has increased dramatically since 2008, states are cutting pay and furloughing workers while slashing funds for essential services.

If you are ready to put your money in the "peace and justice" cup and tell the government you won't pay for war and militarism, you've come to the right place. Check out our website and get in touch with one of the groups in our network.

["In an age where our country invests madly in weapons of war and uses them against people around the world, the same leaders call on other heads of state to refrain from violence."]
