Which bit of ?OUT? does Mubarak not understand? Probably the same bit he fails to grasp in ?democracy? as his speech last night designed to appease the population shows. He sacked his cabinet and promised to appoint a new government today. Pardon me, Mubarak, but that is the job of the people, through free, fair and open elections - not the job of a has-been dictator.
Obama?s speech was little better, being a not-even-thinly-disguised attempt to legitimise Mubarak?s ongoing tenure in calling for him, Mubarak, to deliver democratic and economic reform. His incredible lack of appreciation of the issues ? and the situation ? is bettered only by the European Union and Ban Ki Moon, who both called for dialogue ? puhlease!!!!
Mubarak has had over 30 years to speak, to listen, and to conduct himself in a democratic manner for the political, social, and economic benefit of the Egyptian people. He has proved over and over again that he is incapable of anything but the former, backed by repressive forces both local and foreign.
The Egyptian people, like the Tunisian people, don?t need the United States, the European Union or Ban Ki Moon to tell them what?s needed ? they have come to their own conclusions. These can be simply summarised.
You can?t teach an old dog new tricks.
Unfortunately, in Obama?s case it seems you can?t even teach a young dog new tricks.
What is really going on is most clearly demonstrated by the fleeing from the country of Mubarak?s family several days ago. What is really going on is most clearly demonstrated by the fleeing from the country of top businessmen and ?influential figures?. What is really going on is a role-reversed EXODUS.
And what is undoubtedly happening right now behind the scenes is a desperate shoring up of US and Israeli interests under Mubarak?s final watch before he joins his family, and Ben Ali, in the wilderness. At least Moses had the decency to lead his on the way out.
The Egyptian military will undoubtedly play a significant, and probably the most important role after that of the Egyptian people ? but is the military, too, made in the USA, like their weaponry and their pay-checks? Will they be more disposed towards defending Egyptians? interests, or those of the US and Israel?
The next few days will tell.
