Investigations are underway to verify reports implicating Israel for abusing another Australian passport for the murder of a Hamas official in Dubai, officials say.
The latest revelation comes after officials in Dubai recently identified five new suspects in the assassination of the top Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in January, Australian media reported on Friday.
The Wall Street Journal has also reported that one of the suspects is an Israeli individual and the others were passport-holders from Australia, Britain and France.
Australia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it is making an effort to confirm the authenticity of the latest report.
A spokesman for the ministry told reporters that it would be of grave concern to the Australian government if the report turns out to be true.
Canberra has already condemned the abuse of Australian passports, saying the Australian passport-holders have been victims of identity fraud.
This is the fifth Australian passport linked to the killing of al-Mabhouh back in January.
In February, Dubai police released photos of those allegedly behind the assassination.
The killers used British, French, German, Irish and Australian passports.
Dubai officials accuse the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, of masterminding and executing the assassination.
The new suspects bring to 32 the number of those accused in the concerted terror operation at a Dubai hotel in January.
Israel has so far refrained from commenting about this act of state terrorism.
