Students, the occupation must be opposed! - highschool principal speaks out
Naomi Reichman - Y-net/My-net - "When you join the army, go to the checkpoints. You will see what happens there, bring a spirit of moderation, help create a different situation, and eventually you will reach the conclusion that the occupation should not go on. Military service is a duty - but service in an army which guards the borders and protects the country, not in an army concerned with occupation duties".

In honor of Hedy Epstein
Hedy Epstein, 85, barely escaped the death camps as a child. Last week she was in Cairo as part of the Gaza Freedom March, and started a hunger strike to protest The Mubarak regime's refusal to let the marchers into Gaza to the Rafah border, which the Egyptians control. She has visited the West Bank many times and is committed Palestine solidarity activist. Because she is Jewish and a holocaust survivor, two attributes that confer a certain amount of symbolic capital in our holocaust obsessed culture, Zionists hate here with a particular passion and conduct against her outlandish smear jobs, equating her to the camps' capos, attributing to her statements she never made, arguing with her right to be called a survivor, psychoanalyzing her, and more. If you like gutter journalism, you would appreciate, for example, Lee Kaplan's overflowing sewage from 2007. After her stay in Cairo, the Jerusalem Tawdry found room for a pseudo-scientific analysis of her "sex appeal" (Because Zionism and sexism, lest you forget, go together like horse and carriage), and, noblesse oblige, labeled her antisemitic.

Israel Fears Popular struggle
Dozens of people, including diplomats, Palestinian and Israeli activists gathered on Monday at Ofer detention camp an Israeli military prison in the West Bank to show their support and solidarity with Jamal Juma, Coordinator of the Stop the Wall Campaign. The demonstration coincided with an extension of his detention for a further three days, after being already held in a mobile home in the prison compound for 20 days without no charges have being brought against him.

Egypt's war against Gazans
Girl age 11: Youngest Gaza supporter: Egyptian policeman beat me up and tried to wrest Palestine flag from me
January 6, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - Despite her young age and small body, she decided to visit the occupied homeland. She endured the difficulties after she had traumatized of Gaza war scenes and the retrieval of martyred children from under the rubble. Israa Ameen Abu Rashid, 11, and the youngest supporter in the European campaign "Gaza Freedom March", narrated to PMC (Palestine Media Center) what happened with her in Egypt. She said: "after the Egyptian government had prevented us from the buses and vehicles that would take us to El-Arish then to Gaza Strip, we decided to go on foot last Thursday. While we were waiting for the rest of the campaign members at Al-Tahrir square, I was surprised that the security forces attacked us. They beat me with sticks and separated between me and my mother, who was being hit on the other side of the street too. An officer tried to take off the Palestinian flag from me, but I stuck to it. He continued beating me. I was so sad that I felt I was not in Egypt; I said to my mother it would be much easier for me if Jews were beating us, because I did not expect this from the Egyptian government."

Palestine Vivra! The French Heroes of the Gaza Freedom March, by Emily Ratner
A great many heroes have emerged from the Gaza Freedom March’s efforts in Cairo, where more than 1,400 internationals from 43 countries have come to demand an end to the Israeli siege on Gaza. The South African delegation have inspired us all by facilitating the drafting of the Cairo Declaration to End Israeli Apartheid, a document that reaffirms our commitment to the struggle for Palestinian liberation and self-determination and offers a concrete plan for moving forward. Small groups have flown the Palestinian flag from atop the Cairo Tower and one of the pyramids. Many delegates refused the 100 seats on two buses to Gaza that painted our historic political efforts here as yet another token humanitarian aid trip. We will all leave Cairo with far more hope, wisdom, and collective power than we had when we arrived.

Israeli Racism
Israeli television confrontation is ‘a metaphor of the moral crisis in which Zionism is found today’
The above interview has been making the rounds online, and has been garnering much attention in Israel. The confrontation features Dan Margalit, a well known mainstream Israeli journalist, and MK Jamal Zahalka, a Palestinian member of the Knesset. There have been several responses to the episode in the Israeli press. Below is an illuminating article by Israeli professor Yehuda Shenhav, which appears on theHebrew version of YNET.Interestingly enough, there is a translated article on YNET’s English site attacking Zahalka called "History lesson for Arab MKs." Luckily, a Mondoweiss reader translated the Shenhav article. From YNET.

Israel’s treatment of Ethiopians ‘racist’, Jonathan Cook
NAZARETH, Israel // Health officials in Israel are subjecting many female Ethiopian immigrants to a controversial long-term birth control drug in what Israeli women’s groups allege is a racist policy to reduce the number of black babies. The contraceptive, known as Depo Provera, which is given by injection every three months, is considered by many doctors as a birth control method of last resort because of problems treating its side effects. However, according to a report published last week, use of the contraceptive by Israeli doctors has risen threefold over the past few years. Figures show that 57 per cent of Depo Provera users in Israel are Ethiopian, even though the community accounts for less than two per cent of the total population.

Gaza and the path to accountability
The US, UK and Canadian governments are all embroiled in attempts to immunize themselves from accountability under international law for their own actions in the so-called War on Terror. Protecting Israel from international law has therefore acquired an added urgency, not only in the interests of the Zionist regime, but also in the interests of the US and its two staunchest allies in the War on Terror, Britain and Canada, to remain beyond the reach of international law. Gaza's suffering is Israel's shame
The 85-year-old Jewish, anti-Zionist, Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein is a sturdy looking woman. Her slightly hunched frame hides the determination to continue a life-long dedication to social justice. This week in Cairo she joined close to 1400 international delegates on the Gaza Freedom March (GFM), a project aimed at ending the suffocating blockade on Gaza. Epstein launched a hunger strike alongside about 50 others to highlight the human rights abuses in Palestine and Israeli and Egyptian collusion in the humanitarian crisis for the Strip's 1.5 million population.

"Israel & Palestine: Can They Start Over?",Hussein Agha and Robert Malley in The New York Review of Books
The idea of Israeli–Palestinian partition, of a two-state solution, has a singular pedigree. It has been proposed for at least eight decades. Jews first accepted it as Palestinians recoiled; by the time Palestinians warmed to the notion in the late 1980s, Israelis had turned their backs. Still, its proponents manage to portray it as fresh, new, and capable of leading to peace. International consensus on a two-state agreement is, today, stronger than ever. Meanwhile, interest among the two parties most directly concerned wanes and prospects for achieving it diminish.

"Obama Has Kept the Machine Set on Kill" - Journalist and Activist Allan Nairn Reviews Obama's First Year in Office
In an extended interview, award-winning journalist and activist Allan Nairn looks back over the Obama administration’s foreign policy and national security decisions over the last 12 months. “I think Obama should be remembered as a great man because of the blow he struck against white racism,” Nairn says. “But, once he became president…Obama became a murderer and a terrorist because the U.S. has a machine that spans the globe that has the capacity to kill, and Obama has kept it set on kill. He could have flipped the switch and turned it off but he chose not to do so.” He continues, “In fact, as far as one can tell, Obama seems to have killed more civilians during his first year than Bush did in his first year, and maybe even than Bush killed in his final year.”

Library of Congress on Islam in Early America

Readers may be surprised to learn that there may have been hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Muslims in the United States in 1776—imported as slaves from areas of Africa where Islam flourished. Although there is no evidence that the Founders were aware of the religious convictions of their bondsmen, it is clear that the Founding Fathers thought about the relationship of Islam to the new nation and were prepared to make a place for it in the republic.

Message to Obama and Brown – How about asking WHY?
In their refusal to ask the question of why, really, Muslims are being radicalized, President Obama and Prime Minister Brown are no different from their immediate predecessors. When George "Dubya" Bush and Tony Blair ruled the world and were pressing ahead with their "war on terrorism", I used to ask this question: Are they ignorant of history and don't know what they are doing and therefore stupid, or do they and/or some of the powerful vested interests which pull their strings want a Clash of Civilizations, Judeo-Christian v Islamic?
