Israel Minister of Interior, Ely Yishai, refused a request from the Vatican to grant a Palestinian couple residency in Jerusalem, although it is their birthplace, and their residency rights were taken away by an Israeli decision.

The minister denied the couple a temporary residency permit, even though such a permit would not grant them any civil rights in the city, similar to the permits given to Palestinian workers who are allowed to work in Israel.
Israel army radio reported that this issue would cause more tension between the Vatican and Israel.
Israeli sources close to Yishai stated that the ministry denied the request for “security concerns”, and added that the ministry does not want “to set a precedent that could encourage many Palestinian families to ask for family reunification in Israel.
It is worth mentioning that Israel’s Interior Ministry denied on Thursday a Vatican request to grant 500 Arab Christian priests visas to enter the country while the Pope is visiting it.
