The Palestine Hospital in Cairo, which is run by the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), has traditionally been the main hospital treating injured Palestinians from Gaza. We brought a group of surgeons from St. Jude Children's Hospital (Memphis) and Boston Children's hospital to Amman and Cairo recently to conduct volunteer surgeries on children with ocular and neurological malignancies and injuries. Our time in Cairo was almost exclusively spent in the Palestine Hospital which caters to the Palestinian refugees living in Egypt and those from Gaza that are unable to access specialized surgery in their homeland. Although dozens of injured Gazans were interviewed during our visit, the following videos are the only ones being made public as a result of the insistence these youth expressed on having their stories told:
1. Palestinian youth lost both eyes in Gaza attack (please read description on right for translation)
2. Young civil servant lost both legs in assault on Gaza (please read description on right for translation)
3. Palestinian boy paralyzed from shrapnel to brain (please read description on right for translation)
Given the fact that the Palestine hospital is in Cairo, it faces distinct challenges in providing healthcare to its constituents from Gaza and those refugees living in Egypt. A project is currently underway to create a "twinning" partnership between the Palestine hospital and the children's hospital in Boston that would encourage continued collaboration between medical experts and help improve access to specialized healthcare for patients being treated in the Palestine hospital. More details on this program and how you can become involved will be forthcoming. Meanwhile, here are some interviews with physicians and administrators from the Palestine hospital who describe the enormous challenges healthcare providers in this hospital face each day in providing basic services to the injured and ailing:
4. Lack of basic supplies costs lives in Palestine hospital (visit to hospital lab)
5. Non-functioning equipment costs lives in Palestine hospital (read description on right)
6. Interview with Director of Palestine Hospital (outlining major issues facing hospital)
