Many parallels can be drawn between South Africa and Israel . one such parallel is the requirement for all residents over the age of 16 in the Apartheid State of Israel to indicate whether holders are Jewish or not by adding the persons Hebrew date of birth. Chris McGreal of the Guardian put it so well when he said that these cards are in effect determining where they ["Israeli citizens"] are permitted to live, access to some government welfare programs, and how they are likely to be treated by civil servants and policemen.
