Ottawa Protest: 61 Years of Dispossession: Nothing to Celebrate

Dear friends,

This year marks the 61st anniversary of al Nakba ('the Catastrophe'). The Nakba refers to the destruction of Palestinian society in 1947-8 when more than two-thirds of the Palestinian population was forced into exile as their presence and predominant land ownership was an obstacle to the creation of a Jewish majority state.

On Wednesday, April 29th, there will be a big celebration of Israeli Independence Day at the Ottawa Civic Center from 5:00 to 9:00pm.

As members of the Palestine solidarity community in Ottawa we wish to tell those joining the festivities that ethnic cleansing and occupation are nothing to celebrate!

We will therefore be demonstrating in front of the Civic Center throughout the celebration in support of human rights and the struggle for Palestinian self-determination and freedom, but also to demand an end to Israel’s brutal and illegal siege of Gaza, to demand an end to the occupation of Palestine, and to demand the right of return of Palestinian refugees. We intend to be dressed in plain black clothes while holding banners and pictures.

Please join us between 5:00 and 6:30 in front of Lansdowne Park on Bank Street and bring any banners and signs that you think would be appropriate.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is being organized as a family-friendly, 100% peaceful nonviolent opposition to the Israeli Independence Day celebrations.
