UK arms plant attacked over Gaza war
Nine people have been arrested over breaking into a British arms plant, which makes parts for Israeli warplanes bombing Gaza.
The group, which calls itself Smash EDO, entered the EDO MBM Technology plant in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, The Guardian reported on Sunday.
Demonstrators said they were "decommissioning" the site because equipment made at the plant was being used in Gaza by the Israeli air force.
Police described the damaged as "substantial".
"Windows had been smashed and offices turned over in what I would describe as wanton vandalism, but with machinery and equipment so targeted that it could have been done with a view of bringing business to a standstill. The damage is significant and the value substantial," DCI Graham Pratt of Sussex police said.EDO MBM is the sole British subsidiary of US weapons company EDO Corp. From its Moulescoomb base it manufactures Hellfire missiles and GBU-28 laser guided missiles that have been used extensively in Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Somalia.
EDO Corp was recently acquired by ITT in a multi-billion pound deal.
Israel launched "Operation Cast Lead" on December 27 under the pretext of putting an end to Hamas rocket attacks against southern Israeli towns.
After pounding Gaza non-stop for 22 consecutive days, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced on Sunday Jan.17, a 'unilateral ceasefire' which does not include Hamas, nor does it mean a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
The aggression has so far left over 1,300 Palestinians killed and more than 6,000 others wounded; however the deadly Israeli onslaught has so far failed to stop Palestinian rocket attacks.
Furthermore Human Rights Watch announced on Jan. 11, that Tel Aviv has been pounding Gaza districts with artillery shells containing white phosphorus that would spread the chemical over an area covering 125 to 250 meter in diameter.
White prosperous can cause severe burns that tear through flesh or bone, or damage liver, kidney, heart, the lungs, and even lead to death.
The Israeli military denies using the weapon against civilians, saying it used white phosphorus shells only to create smokescreens to allow its ground forces to operate
