U.S. Weaponry Facilitates Killings In Gaza
The devastating Israeli firepower, unleashed largely on Palestinian civilians in Gaza during two weeks of fighting, is the product of advanced U.S. military technology. The U.S. weapons systems used by the Israelis -- including F-16 fighter planes, Apache helicopters, tactical missiles and a wide array of munitions -- have been provided by Washington mostly as outright military grants.

British link with drone aiding the Israeli war effort
An Israeli-owned British company has been drawn into the political controversy over arms sales to Israel prompted by the assault on Gaza. UAV Engines, of Lichfield, Staffordshire, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of engines for drones - unmanned aerial vehicles that are becoming critical frontline systems for military and civilian use around the world. The company, known as UEL, is owned by the Israel drone specialists Silver Arrow, a subsidiary of the Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems.

Tens of thousands flee Rafah

TEL AVIV (IRIN) - Independent confirmation of the situation in Gaza, particularly in Rafah on the border with Egypt, is difficult as Israel's ban on journalists entering the Strip remains in place. Telephone lines are overloaded and affected by power cuts. Rafah residents told IRIN by phone that tens of thousands had fled heavy Israeli bombardments, with some seeking refuge at United Nations institutions or at homes of friends and relatives in areas further from the border but still in the south.

Gaza victims' burns increase concern over phosphorus

Photographic evidence has emerged that proves that Israel has been using controversial white phosphorus shells during its offensive in Gaza, despite official denials by the Israel Defence Forces. There is also evidence that the rounds have injured Palestinian civilians, causing severe burns. The use of white phosphorus against civilians is prohibited under international law.

Dr. Ehab Jasir al-Shaer, a physician specializing in dermatology, a graduate of a university in Ukraine, has not been at his clinic since 27 December 2008. On that day, Ehab, his brother Raja, Ehab's uncle Yasir and Ehab's cousins Haitham and Tamer, all went to the Rafah governorate local administration building in Rafah City in the south of the Gaza Strip where they live. Rami Almeghari reports from the besieged Gaza Strip.

Too much to mourn in Gaza
After finishing a shift with the Palestine Red Crescent Society yesterday morning, we went to the United Nations-administered al-Fakhoura school in Jabaliya, which was bombed by Israeli forces, killing at least 40 displaced people who were taking shelter there. When we arrived, prayers were happening in the street in front of the school.

Israel criticised after 'shocking' discovery of exhausted children
Four exhausted children have been discovered cowering in a house next to the bodies of their mothers by staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which today accused the Israeli military of "unacceptable" delays in allowing medics safe access to injured Gazans. The Red Cross workers found the small children, who were so weak they could not stand, sheltering next to the bodies of their mothers in a house in Zeitoun, southeast of Gaza City. Another man was found alive, but again too weak to stand. At least 12 bodies were lying on mattresses.

Riding on Fire
I've been working with the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance services in Jabaliya, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya for the past 5 days and nights. For the past five days the Red Cross and the Red Crescent emergency services have been blocked from evacuating the injured and the dead from key areas surrounding Jabaliya and Gaza City. Special Forces have occupied houses in the areas of Zeitoun, Atarturah, Zoumo and Salahedeen.

Pity for the tiger is injustice to the sheep
The situation has been exploited very cleverly by the Israeli Ministry of War. Yes, the Ministry of War. The soldiers who call themselves soldiers defending Israeli security are continuing a bloody history of war crimes against Palestinians, from 1932 until 2009. During the last two days when since ground incursion started, things have been unbelievable, hard to watch or to talk about.

Airburst shells 'are danger to civilians'

Israel's use of white phosphorus airburst shells over the densely populated Gaza Strip came under fresh criticism last night for endangering civilians. The New York-based Human Rights Watch compared the use of the shells to the impact of cluster munitions which scatter "bomblets" over a wide area. The group questioned whether the way the weapon was being deployed was compatible with Israel's Geneva conventions commitment to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians.

Truce
ANALYSIS / Egypt-Syria row hampering Gaza truce efforts
Serious differences of opinion between Syria and Egypt are making the process of reaching a Gaza cease-fire agreement difficult. Syria has advised Hamas not to accept Egypt's cease-fire proposal, arguing it is too vague, particularly regarding the issue of Israel's withdrawal from the Strip.

Egypt closes Gaza border to aid

CAIRO (IPS) - Egyptian authorities have almost fully sealed the border with Gaza, preventing delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid. "The government has expressly forbidden the entry of aid convoys laden with food into the Gaza Strip," Emmad al-Din Moustafa, member of the Popular Committee for Aiding Gaza told IPS. "The continued border closure -- like the Israeli assault itself -- constitutes a crime against humanity."

Antoun Issa, "Egyptian Complicity Exposes Deep Fear of Iran"
Arabs are aware, albeit repressed, that Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia (the Arab trio) form a pro-American axis of oppressive dictators whose primary interest is containing Iran's growing presence in the region. . . . The open and direct accusation of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah that Egypt is an accomplice in Israel's war is indeed new territory in inter-Arab rivalry. . . . While Arab satellite networks broadcast strewn Palestinian bodies and wailing mothers for their lost children, Egypt sends its troops to the Gaza border to prevent the Palestinians from breaking through the Rafah crossing, the only border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

Claiming impartiality, Europe leans towards Israel
BRUSSELS (IPS) - In carefully crafted official statements, diplomats have portrayed the European Union as something of an honest broker in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yet even though almost all of the people killed over the past fortnight have been Palestinians, some top-ranking leaders in the 27-country bloc have tacitly offered their support for Israel's bombing and invasion of Gaza.

The West Bank: We're all Hamas now: supporters of Fatah unite behind enemy
Palestinian Authority security forces are keeping a tight lid on protests, preventing confrontations with Israeli troops and arresting anyone raising Hamas banners at rallies. But displays of identification with the beleaguered Gazans are everywhere. Nine-year-old green-kerchiefed girl Scouts, their foreheads marked with the word Gaza in red ink, were among those who marched through the main al-Manara square in a protest. They held up pictures of bandaged toddlers, and dozens of demonstrators chanted, "With blood and spirit, we will redeem you, O Gaza".

The Day After
Even if the Israeli military doesn't manage to crush Hamas, any power vacuum could tempt Fatah men to renew the internecine fighting that has killed dozens of Gazans over the past three years. Still, few Palestinian figureswould risk looking like Israeli collaborators while the bombs are still falling. "I can't just take my men and go," says one Fatah security chief, who requested anonymity in order to speak frankly. "No Palestinian security agency would go into Gaza on an Israeli tank."

Barack Obama administration 'prepared to talk to Hamas'
The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon President Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say. The move to open contacts with Hamas - which could be initiated through the US intelligence services - would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency's ostracising of the group.

Barack Obama's apparent willingness to engage with Hamas is heartening
The first response to word that Barack Obama is prepared to make contact – albeit low-level and clandestine – with Hamas should be caution. For one thing, the very act of revealing such a move can make it less likely. If the Obama camp comes under heavy criticism from those opposed to engagement with Hamas, it may be forced to deny it countenanced the idea at all. Obama has been super-careful to say next to nothing during the Gaza crisis – and certainly nothing at odds with the Bush administration. He would clearly not have chosen to make this policy shift public. (That said, it's bound to be welcomed by those in the Muslim world who have been angered by his virtual silence this last fortnight.)

Media bias, attacks against media, prevention of journalists into Gaza
Engel: Israel waiting until Obama's inauguration to let reporters into Gaza, when 'viewers simply won't care.'
Last night on The Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC correspondent Richard Engel discussed Israel's refusal to let reporters into Gaza. "I've called everyday and said 'when are we going to be allowed in?'" he said, adding that one Israeli official "had an interesting explanation" for the situation. The official told Engel that Israel doesn't want reporters in Gaza documenting the humanitarian situation or revealing military tactics. Israel is trying to "manage the image" of the war, Engel reported, adding this: ENGEL: This official told me he expects this operation, while negotiations are taking place, will last several more days. And that after that, reporters would eventually be allowed in. But at that stage, Israel is assuming the United States will mostly be focused on all of the coverage around the inauguration, and that viewers simply won't care at that point.

US media didn't report Israeli ceasefire violation
WASHINGTON (IPS) - Consumed by coverage of the 4 November presidential election, US mainstream media ignored a key Israeli military attack on a Hamas target that some Palestinians claim marked the effective end of the ceasefire between the two sides and set the stage for the current round of bloodletting. While the major US news wire Associated Press (AP) reported that the attack, in which six members of Hamas's military wing were killed by Israeli ground forces, threatened the ceasefire, its report was carried by only a handful of small newspapers around the country.

EI investigation: The US media and the attack on Gaza
In the first three days of the Israeli offensive from 28-30 December, editorials and op-eds from five major US papers overwhelmingly adopted the official US and Israeli government talking points on the conflict -- even where this version was clearly contradicted by the legal and historical record, widely available to the public. Shervan Sardar presents the findings of a special study for The Electronic Intifada.

Journalists' Syndicate denounces PA over provocation, assault
The director of the Ramallah-based Journalists' Syndicate on Thursday denounced what he described as members of the Palestinian Authority (PA)'s security forces' assaults and provocation of West Bank journalists. Na'eem At-Tubasi claimed that PA forces committed "acts against journalists," particularly in the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Bethlehem, as well as others.

A 'Leftist' Response to Wartime in Gaza
A response to "Wartime in Gaza: The worst anti-Israel charges you'll hear", Bradley Burston, Haaretz, December 29, 2008. The following "leftist" arguments were presented for denial by Mr. Burston, a Haaretz correspondent who is obviously educated in the Israel as victim line of thinking. Some element of truth may be squeezed out of some of his counter arguments, but most are argued well out of the overall historical context, leaving the arguments as essentially more Israeli/U.S. jingoism and rhetoric. I tried to find the second five "rightist" arguments from on the web but a quick search provided no results. It would seem though that Burston is trying to position himself as the intelligent rationale centrist when all about him are losing their minds.

Taghreed El-Khodary continues to justify Israeli murders
"Israel blames Hamas for civilian casualties, saying it knowingly endangers civilians by operating among them. Asked later about the presence of Hamas fighters in the streets around the school, Ms. Deed avoided a direct answer, but implied that her heart was not with Hamas. "We want to live like everyone else in the world," she said." People are dying all around her and she goes around asking people to blame Hamas to please her editors in New York.

The lies of Ethan Bronner
"At 66, Mr. Barak is the country's most decorated soldier, famous for having foiled an airplane hijacking years ago while disguised in a mechanic's uniform and for leading a revenge killing operation against Palestinian guerrillas in Lebanon while dressed as a woman." Palestinian Guerrilla? Among the people he shot in Beirut, was the poet, Kamal Nasir, in his bed. Kamal Nasir never held a gun.

A tribute to Israeli killers

Today, the New York Times went all out for Israeli killers. The front page had a picture showing the "anguish" of Israeli terrorist soldiers and the inside pages had a tribute to the soldiers written by Isabel Kershner. The picture inside showed Israeli terrorist soldiers mourning their dead. It was the only picture of mourning I have seen. Only the killers mourn, in the New York Times because according to the racist standards of the Times--and make no mistake about it is all about racism--only the precious people mourn.

Racism of the Nation magazine
The Nation magazine wrote this: "J Street is joined by other good activist groups, such as Americans for Peace Now and Jewish Voice for Peace. Most of Congress has been shamefully quiescent, but Representative Dennis Kucinich has spoken out courageously against the violence, as have several other members lauded by J Street. And on the first day of Israel's ground invasion, 10,000 Israelis took part in a massive peace demonstration." But this entire editorial displays the racism/sectarianism that is at the heart of the American liberal movement.

'Pro-Israel' TV ads from group tied to Hagee, Abramoff
A graphic television advertisement pleading for aid to Israel, which has recently run during Countdown with Keith Olbermann and other cable shows, is the product of a group with close ties to neoconservatives, the right-wing evangelical community and former associates of Jack Abramoff.

Richard Silverstein: The Israeli foreign ministry itself is asking volunteers to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information

The hasbara brigade strikes again! You always hear about Israeli attempts at media manipulation. Everyone knows it's going on but usually the process happens through cyber insurgents like those involved with Giyus (and its media monitoring software, Megaphone). Now, we know that the Israeli foreign ministry itself is orchestrating propaganda efforts designed to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information.

Analysis/Op-Ed/Commentary

What You Don't Know About Gaza, By RASHID KHALIDI
NEARLY everything you've been led to believe about Gaza is wrong. Below are a few essential points that seem to be missing from the conversation, much of which has taken place in the press, about Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip.

Israel: Boycott, Divest, Sanction, By Naomi Klein

It's time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa.

Eric Margolis: While Gaza Burns, the World Watches

As of this writing, US-supplied F-16I fighters and helicopter gunships continue to pound Gaza with bombs and missiles. Israeli ground forces appear poised to invade Gaza, unless Israel heeds world calls for a truce. In the North American press version of events, we are told evil Hamas Islamic terrorists backed by Iran are raining deadly rockets on Israel with the intent of destroying the Jewish state. Israel, goes the mantra heard from our politicians and the media, 'has the right to defend herself.'

The Dominion of the Dead

I have never previously felt so despondent about Israel, so shamed by its actions, so despairing of any peace that might terminate the dominion of the dead in favor of opportunity for the living. More than dreams, I've been having nightmares. I cannot see a scenario in which any short-term Israeli tactical victory over Hamas is not overwhelmed by the long-term strategic cost of this war.

Fighting to Preserve a Myth

SUPPOSE Israel manages to prevent its campaign in Gaza from turning into a repeat of its disastrous war against Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006. Suppose the army does not get bogged down fighting in the narrow streets of Gaza's refugee camps and international outrage at the spiraling death toll does not force it to pull out with rockets still falling on Israeli towns. Suppose no soldiers are taken hostage and Hamas suffers enough damage to force it to accept a cease-fire on Israel's terms. Then what?

The needless Gaza tragedy

EGYPT, France, and Turkey deserve the utmost support from Washington as they try to broker a cease-fire and a durable truce in Gaza. As the deaths of 40 people from Israel's shelling of United Nations schools in Gaza demonstrated earlier this week, civilians are paying a terrible price for the failure of their leaders to renew peacefully the six-month truce that collapsed last month.

Israel (and a world that looks the other way) is in the grip of a moral paralysis
"We had no choice," has become Israel's national mantra. But to say "we had no choice," is to say our actions are not the fruit of our intentions. We are now the instrument of the will of others. Hamas made us do this.

Birth Pangs of a New Palestine
Shortly after 11:30 am on December 27, 2008, at the height of the midday bustle on the first day of the Gazan week and with multitudes of schoolchildren returning home from the morning shift, close to 90 Israeli warplanes launched over 100 tons of explosives at some 100 targets throughout the 139 square miles of the Gaza Strip. Within minutes, the near simultaneous air raids killed more than 225 and wounded at least 700, more than 200 of them critically. These initial attacks alone produced dozens more dead than any other day in the West Bank and Gaza combined since Israel's occupation of those lands commenced in June 1967.

The Same Old Change
Excerpt: The news that Dennis Ross will be appointed the special envoy to Iran -- and, more, that he will function as a Middle East "czar" -- is "staggeringly bad news," as Philip Weiss so trenchantly put it. The appointment, Weiss avers, is "illustrative of the fact that neoconservatism by one of its more amenable names is still in our lives, and the Israel lobby is a big component of the Establishment. Dennis Ross, who pushed the settlements in '92. Dennis Ross, who moved from party to party with indifference, because he had a bigger power than party behind him. As Obama is now demonstrating.. A friend says that Dennis Ross in Arabic means, Expletive you!"

Barack Obama's historic speech on the Middle East

President-elect Barack Obama has a problem. Particularly in the wake of Israel's holiday-season massacre of Gazans, he is under heavy pressure to focus immediately on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to "do something." However, if he were simply to announce an intention to work harder to achieve an impossible goal.

Livni and the Big Lie
"There is no humanitarian crisis in the [Gaza] Strip." -- - Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, 1 January 2009.
In 1925, Adolf Hitler, writing in Mein Kampf, defined 'The Big Lie'. He called it a lie so enormous that people "…would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously." By now it should be obvious that Livni and other Israeli officials have decided to do just that; utilizing the same technique in service of their public relations campaign to justify the atrocities taking place in Gaza, they simultaneously claim they do not exist.

Children of Gaza, Run to the Angels

Ironically, it was in Palestine, 20 years ago, that I concluded that there is no God. For how could a God, who claims to love all and treat all with impartiality, allow such horrors like those in Palestine to happen?

Gaza Seen From Paris
There are surely millions of us, invisible to each other, enraged and powerless as we watch the massacre of Gaza and listen to our media describe it as a "retaliation against terrorism", "Israel's right to defend itself". We have reached a point where answering the Zionist arguments is both useless and unworthy of humanity. So long as it is recognized that the shells landing on Ashkelon are likely to have been fired by descendants of the inhabitants of that region who were driven out by the Zionists in 1948, talk of peace is a smoke screen for continued Israeli assault on the survivors of that great injustice.

Look who's talking / No end sans Hamas
At midnight tonight, according to Hamas' interpretation of the Palestinian constitution, the tenure of Mahmoud Abbas as President of the Palestinian Authority comes to an end. The confrontation in the Gaza Strip has granted Israel the opportunity to decide whether Abbas will lose his legitimacy before some of his nation, or will secure continued Fatah rule in the West Bank.

The lessons of Gaza

Even if Israel seemingly has no choice, the United States does. To exercise that choice by replicating the errors Israel has made in its relations with the Palestinians would be the height of folly. If Obama fails to grasp this essential point, the nation's own bloody chronicle of uprisings, incursions, invasions, and tit-for-tat retaliation will continue. Iraq and Afghanistan will be only the first in a long line of tar babies on which the United States will exhaust itself. And in the end, it will simply replicate Israel's failures on an even larger and more tragic scale.

War of Choice: How Israel Manufactured the Gaza Escalation
Israel has repeatedly claimed that it had "no choice" but to wage war on Gaza on December 27 because Hamas had broken a ceasefire, was firing rockets at Israeli civilians, and had "tried everything in order to avoid this military operation," as Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni put it.

The Point Where the Inhumanity Becomes Clear

"This is the point where the inhumanity becomes clear" — so said John Ging of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to reporters on January 5th, 2009 as he spoke about the worsening situation in Gaza. His comments were illustrated by video of continued Israeli bombing and graphic pictures of wounded men, women and children flooding the overwhelmed hospitals of Gaza. Seventy-five percent of the region is without electricity, food and medicines are in increasingly short supply thanks to the Israeli-imposed blockade that preceded the invasion and the invasion itself. Yet most of the world's governments are either silent or, even worse, calling for a continuation of the assault.

The Gaza Ghetto Uprising, by Mazin Qumsiyeh

In Gaza as in Iraq, the US public is being lied to while US taxpayers and US power is wasted to support aggression. Vanity Fair reported on the scheme to topple Hamas concocted by Eliot Abrams (a Zionist in the Bush administration) that was "part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs" that ended up strengthening Hamas. And by contrast to PR strategies, the former head of the Israeli intelligence services admitted in Israeli papers that Israel could have stopped Palestinian retaliatory home-made rockets long ago by lifting its siege of Gaza (a condition of the cease fire between Hamas and Israel agreed to but rarely implemented) but that Israel had a more strategic issue: to try a different way to topple the duly elected Hamas government.

Quote of the Week: Gary Kamiya

"Contrary to the Holocaustology that sees all Israel's enemies as the second coming of Adolf Hitler, Hamas is not the problem; it is a symptom. Treating it as the problem only prolongs the crisis. The problem is political and historical: the dispossession of Palestinians and the ongoing Israeli occupation of their land. Until that fundamental problem is resolved -- and the hour when it can be resolved by a two-state solution may already have passed -- Israel and America's attempts to bludgeon Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims into submission will only generate more hatred, more violence and ever more extremism". --The Israel Rules, by Gary Kamiya; Salon, 6 Jan 2009.

Letter from Gaza (1956), by Ghassan Kanafani

Dear Mustafa, I have now received your letter, in which you tell me that you've done everything necessary to enable me to stay with you in Sacramento. I've also received news that I have been accepted in the department of Civil Engineering in the University of California. I must thank you for everything, my friend. But it'll strike you as rather odd when I proclaim this news to you -- and make no doubt about it, I feel no hesitation at all, in fact I am pretty well positive that I have never seen things so clearly as I do now. No, my friend, I have changed my mind. I won't follow you to "the land where there is greenery, water and lovely faces" as you wrote. No, I'll stay here, and I won't ever leave.
