No bread in Gaza
The Gaza Strip, home to more than 1.5 million Palestinians, will soon be without its most basic commodity: bread. While families around the world celebrate Christmas, gathering around tables of abundance, Gaza parents like me will not even be able provide bread for their children unless Israel opens the commercial crossings to Gaza from the outside world.

"It is our opinion that Israel was given a period of calm but we received nothing in return. The crossings Israel promised to reopen have remained closed. As long as they are not reopened, we will continue to support the rocket attacks on Israel." Barak warns: Hamas will pay a 'heavy price'
He did not elaborate. But defense officials, speaking on condition on anonymity because they were not permitted to discuss the plans, said the Israeli operation would likely begin with surgical airstrikes against rocket launchers and continue with a land invasion. Harsh weather conditions are hampering visibility and complicating air force missions, so the operation won't be launched until the skies clear, they added.

Hunger before the storm
If you visit my house you won't find power, while my neighbor is out of gas. Another neighbor seeks potable water as power outages have left him without for four days. A third neighbor desparately looks for milk for his child but does so in vain. Another friend who lives on the corner needs medicine that can't currently be found in Gaza. "We are under an organized Israeli media campaign. We are being starved and victimized by Israel. The world think we are besieging Israel, not the other way around. Israel is playing up the issue of rocket fire to besiege us more and more."

Checkpoint Bethlehem
It is 4:30 a.m. when I arrive at the Bethlehem checkpoint. It’s a gateway, known as “Checkpoint 300,” that thousands of Palestinians are made to pass through every day in order to get to their jobs in Jerusalem. The people come early, and on foot, because Israel does not allow cars with Palestinian license plates into Jerusalem. Set up and operated by the Israeli military, checkpoints are one of the many ways the state of Israel enforces its occupation, now in its 42nd year, of the Palestinian West Bank.

Shortage of men marks Christian Christmas in Baghdad
As worshippers quietly listened to the sermon and received communion in a two-hour service, a quick count of the congregation of around 200 showed that about 75 percent of them were women. The lopsided gender ratio is a grim reminder of the violence Iraq's beleaguered minority Christian community has endured since the 2003 US-led invasion sparked vicious sectarianism in this multi-faith nation.

Iraq: The Necessary Withdrawal
Bush's costly and illegal war has been a drain on the economy to the tune of a trillion dollars if hidden costs are included, a sum likely to triple in coming decades as the public pays for the care of injured veterans. The war has left tens of thousands of military personnel wounded, suffering from brain trauma or dead. The toll on Iraqis has been monumental.
