On the afternoon of Thursday 28 February, 2008, a group of Palestinian boys were playing football on some open ground near their homes in the Gaza Strip. At around 3.20pm, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at the boys, killing four of them instantly and seriously injuring another three. The four dead boys were Omar Hussein Dardouna, aged 14, Dardouna Deib Dardouna, aged 12, Mohammed Na'im Hammouda, aged 9, and Ali Munir Dardouna who was just 8. ISM Gaza reports from the Olive Harvest Campaign 2008 in the 'buffer zone'
ISM Gaza Strip volunteers living in the Gaza Strip have been assisting farmers living in the Buffer Zone areas of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya with their olive harvest during the month of October. In 2005, Israeli Occupation forces declared a 500 meter wide area, deep into the rich agricultural land of Gaza Strip, as a "Buffer Zone". The entire Eastern border of Gaza Strip has become a desert in the past few years, while once it fed and sustained the 1.5 million residents, most of it is now empty fields of dirt, with maybe a lone tree, reminding all that the land was once full of olive, clementines, lemon, orange, date and many other trees and crops.

Travesty of tolerance on exhibit
Israel seems to have little time for the irony that a modern Jewish shrine to "coexistence and tolerance" is being built on the graves of the city's Muslim forefathers. The Israeli Supreme Court's approval last week of the building of a Jewish Museum of Tolerance over an ancient Muslim cemetery in Jerusalem is the latest in a series of legal and physical assaults on Islamic holy places since Israel's founding in 1948. The verdict ended a four-year struggle by Islamic authorities inside Israel to stop development at the Mamilla cemetery, which lies in the shadow of Jerusalem's Old City walls, close to Jaffa Gate.

Where is the Occupation of Iraq Heading?
This spring , the Iraqi government and U.S. forces attacked Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi army in its strongholds in Basra and Sadr City in Baghdad. Iraq looked like it was on the verge of full-scale war between the occupiers' client state and the Sadrists. Iran intervened, cut a deal between the Iraqi government and the Sadrists, and saved the U.S. surge from disaster. Since then, violence has dropped by nearly 80 percent from the previous year. Now, despite ominous signs of continuing instability, the U.S. ruling class and its obedient media have trumpeted the surge—the infusion of 30,000 extra troops into Iraq beginning in the winter of 2007—for having stabilized Iraq. The architect of the surge, General David Petraeus, has been lionized across the political spectrum. He has been promoted as the new head of Central Command that oversees the entire U.S. military in the Middle East.

Only Nader Is Right on the Issues
Sen. Barack Obama's vote to renew the Patriot Act, his votes to continue to fund the Iraq war, his backing of the FISA Reform Act, his craven courting of the Israeli lobby, his support of the death penalty, his refusal to champion universal, single-payer not-for-profit health care for all Americans, his call to increase troop levels and expand the war in Afghanistan, his failure to call for a reduction in the bloated and wasteful defense spending and his lobbying for the huge taxpayer swindle known as the bailout are repugnant to most of us on the left. Nader stands on the other side of all those issues.

McCain, Obama and Khalidi
I know Rashid Khalidi. You, Senator McCain, are no Rashid Khalidi. And you, Senator Obama, are most certainly no Rashid Khalidi either. I don't know Khalidi very well, but I interviewed him in 1989 for a book on Palestinian political views, and I've talked to him on the phone a few times since. I know that he is a superb scholar, as anyone else who has met him, listened to him speak, or read any of his many books knows. He is non-polemical, his tone in both writing and speaking is measured, he writes nothing except what can be backed up by solid evidence. He does not "bash" Israel, and does not "bash" the United States for unquestioningly supporting Israel; he writes only about Israeli and U.S. policy in terms of how these policies affect Palestinians living under Israeli domination and Middle East peoples living under U.S. hegemony. His criticism of Israel is reasoned, unemotional, and balanced. He has frequently criticized the policies of the Palestinian leadership -- that PLO that McCain personally equated to neo-Nazis, that Sarah Palin mocked, and to which the McCain campaign has linked Khalidi -- in similar terms.

Remember me
Obama bashing begins here. It was a noisy night in Washington, DC. Cars were parading the streets and honking their horns all night long. People around were very excited and people walked the streets and yelled and shouted in joy. AlJazeera offices: now that was a different story. The chaos there could not hide the festive atmosphere. People took bets and they had a sheet with staff names. I asked who was betting on McCain: no one, they said but they were betting on when the results would come in with news of Obama victory. People were excited and emotional. As I sat with the three anchors listening to Obama victory speech, I would make critical comments.
