Despite the image of coexistence cultivated by the Israeli authorities, Jaffa is far from offering a shared space for Jews and Palestinians, according to Sami Shehadeh of the Popular Committee for the Defence of Jaffa's Homes. Instead, Palestinian residents live in their own largely segregated neighborhoods, especially Ajami, the city's poorest district.

World Bank: Israeli restrictions make Palestinians more dependent on aid

The Palestinians are becoming more dependent on foreign aid, mainly due to a sluggish economy stifled by continued Israeli restrictions on trade and movement, the World Bank said in a report Wednesday. - -

The bank, citing the Palestinian Federation of Industries, said the closure forced 98 percent of Gaza's factories to close.

An informal cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in June has largely held, but has not led to a significant easing of the border closure, the bank said.

OPT: Growth weak, aid dependency rising - World Bank

JERUSALEM, 17 September (IRIN) - Economic progress has been insufficient to stimulate growth in the occupied Palestinian territories because of the restrictions on movement, while dependency on aid was increasing, the World Bank said on 17 September.
